Casa Arrochi enjoys a tranquil, secluded location on the beautiful Arade River, just 3 kilometres south of Silves. Silves is a gorgeous town with a fascinating history. This ancient Arab kingdom inherited a stately outline, the epitome of which is its red-hued castle, the largest castle in the Algarve. The castle enjoys wonderful views of the town, its fertile fields covered with orange trees and the beautiful River Arade. Silves was conquered from the Moors in 1189 by King Sancho I but the Moors were only fully expelled in 1242 by King Afonso III. The ancient mosque was transformed into the town’s cathedral, starting in Gothic style and completed during the Baroque period. Opposite the cathedral is the Igreja da Misericordia, much of which dates back to the 18th century. Silves is a crumbling place brimming with narrow, cobbled streets lined with lively alfresco cafes. It boasts a Moorish-style garden which is open daily to visitors. A defunct cork factory is now home to a couple of museums and some bars and cafes. In August, the town hosts a lively beer festival. It is good to visit the town in the morning for its colourful riverfront market, near its 13th century bridge.
Not far away is the holiday resort of Portimao and the next door Praia da Rocha. This stunning beach stretches for two kilometres, backed by huge cliffs. Portimao started out as a trading post and commercial port. Its riverside setting has reinvented itself as a tourist-loving town with excellent shopping, wining and dining. It smart waterfront promenade is sprinkled with palms, gardens and open-air cafes. Boat trips can be taken along the Arade River and out to sea to explore this magical coastline. Opposite Portimao lies Ferragudo, a typical fishing village on the banks of the Arade River. This traditional, charming village offers pretty whitewashed houses with typical chimneys and a gorgeous church on the top of the hill.
Just twenty minutes away from Portimao is Lagos with it historical hotspots, first-class collection of neon-lit bars and stunning four kilometre stretch of sand, Meia Praia.
Lagoa is an ancient town of whitewashed houses that used to rise above a lagoon. Now only the name remains as well as the local delicious wine! The town is very traditional. The cultural centre of Lagoa was originally built in 1710 as the Convent of Saint Joseph but it fell into disrepair and opened as the culture centre after a major renovation. You will discover exhibitions of paintings, photography and sculpture. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, which means Church of Our Lady of Light, is beautiful and worth a visit. The Lady in Red art gallery is located in an unused industrial space of a big wine producer. It is a stunning display of modern art.
Near the town Estombar you will find a park called the Municipal Park of the Springs. It surrounds a spring of the Arade River and is wonderful for picnics. It is also a great place to swim and makes a change from the beach.

The Region
Situated some 7 km inland from the magnificent coastline for which this municipality of the Algarve is renowned, the small city of Lagoa has a rural feel that contrasts significantly with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of its popular seaside resorts.
The idyllic town is charmingly traditional and only a short distance from the popular Portimão. As well as being close to some of the best beach resorts in the region and the historic town of Silves, Lagoa holidays have ample charms of their own.
Inserted in a traditionally agricultural and important wine-producing area, Lagoa lies on a small hill rising above flatlands that allegedly once held the lagoon that gave the city its name.
