Ideally situated on Montenegro’s stunning Bay of Kotor, Tivat is a sunny coastal town famous for its scenic views and elegant marina, where white yachts drift by as you stroll along the promenade. Located at the foot of Mount Vrmac, Tivat is the dream destination for those in search of gorgeous beaches, spectacular natural beauty and a glimpse into Montenegro’s distinctive cultural heritage.
Porto Montenegro is arguably the most well-known attraction in Tivat. This luxury marina, where opulent superyachts come to the dock, features a wide range of amenities including excellent restaurants, lively bars and boutique shops. Sailing enthusiasts will adore wandering along the promenade, before paying a visit to the nearby Naval Heritage Museum. Located in a charming old boat shed, the museum is home to two Yugoslav navy submarines and celebrates Tivat’s rich maritime history.

There are many other cultural landmarks and natural attractions to be discovered around Tivat, including the twelfth-century island fortress of Sveti Marko and Park Pejovic’s picturesque botanic gardens. At Park Pejovic, visitors can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, with a number of scenic hiking and biking trails available. The town of Tivat dates back to ancient times when it was known as Teuta. Over the course of its long and varied history, Tivat has been ruled by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and the Ottoman Empire, leaving the town with its own unique blend of architectural styles which visitors are sure to enjoy.

For water sports enthusiasts, the Bay of Kotor offers a treasure trove of coastal adventures, with activities such as paddleboarding, sea kayaking and jet skiing all available. After a sunny afternoon out on the water, why not make your way towards the old town of neighbouring Kotor for a leisurely evening meal? Montenegro’s cuisine combines Mediterranean and Balkan flavours, providing visitors with some exquisite delicacies to sample, such as delicious seafood buzara. Don’t forget to sample a glass of excellent Montenegrin wine – there are several wineries in the countryside offering intimate tours and tastings.
Spend another day wandering the charming, labyrinthine streets of Kotor’s old town, before visiting the iconic St. Tryphon's Cathedral and the old clock tower on the Square of Arms.

The town is known for its lively street culture, with local music festivals, parades and art events taking place throughout the year. Of course, you can always escape to the beach whenever you feel the need for a refreshing swim in the sea or a moment of complete relaxation in the sunshine. There are a number of secluded, sandy coves dotted along Kotor Bay, where you can swim in crystal-clear waters whilst admiring the lush green mountains. Tivat is home to Plavi Horizonti, a stunning beach with calm waters, where the scent of the surrounding pine trees lingers in the air.

About the Region & Getting There

About the Bay of Kotor

The Bay of Kotor, or Boka, has been a World Heritage Site since 1979, so be assured of its captivating scenery that includes; a Venetian old town, a Fortress, Roman Mosaics, churches and a glistening cove that all culminate to provide guests with an exceptional holiday destination.

Sailing through the fjord you will notice the Orjen Mountains along the west, and the Lovćen Mountain range curling around the east, which outline this spellbinding landscape. As you enter through the bay you are greeted by a man-made islet that is home to Our Lady of the Rocks Church and a museum. This is the first of many reminders that you are about to reach a region of Montenegro that is famed for its natural scenery and poignant architecture.

The Bay of Kotor is made up of four cornerstones - Lastva, Morinj, Stoliv and the most renowned Tivat. Within these villages you are able to find iconic landmarks such as St Petka Church and St Mary’s Church, or for something a little less pious; simply enjoy Tivat Marina and Gornji Stoliv’s Olive grove & Fig orchard.

Travel inland and strap on a pair of hiking boots as you explore Lovcen National Park. Although it is about an hours drive from the Bay, it really is worth the day trip! Whether you’re travelling with a Botanists, Ecologist, Entomologist or Zoologist; they will be pleased to know that there’s an immeasurable number of species that include birds, insects, bears, wolves and some breath-taking flora & fauna.

We urge holidaymakers to make the most of Kodor! This charming town has everything you need to forget the day-to-day tribulations of home life. Not only does this small medieval refuge have a host of cafes & restaurants, but there are some must see attractions like the Maritime Museum, the Cats Museum of Kotor, Cats of Kotor Shop and St. John’s Hill. The perfect retreat for a family in need of sun, sea & sentiment.
