What Oliver loves…
- Villa Meilak is super stylish and makes a great first impression, exquisitely decorated with meticulous attention to detail with all the mods cons
- The villa has lots of extra value-added well-thought out amenities especially for children, including a PlayStation 3, DVD player, and a dedicated recreational area in the garden.
- The sauna in the garden is a superb way to let off steam after a day out.
- The villa is equidistant between the beaches of the south coast and the capital city of Valetta in the north.
Steep yourself in history at the beautiful Villa Meilak, sitting serenely on the hillside in the village of Triq Il-Barbieri, in the ancient area of Zurrieq, Malta. This elegant one storey villa has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living, dining and kitchen area, a stunning outdoor space with a private swimming pool, sauna, and well-tended gardens, and can sleep up to eight guests. Perfect for a family, friends, or group holiday, and an excellent base from which to explore the fascinating island of Malta.
The villa is a charming combination of both traditional craftsmanship complemented by modern amenities and includes complimentary Wi-Fi and air conditioning throughout. The open plan living space is flooded with natural light and cleverly incorporates a lounge, which blends seamlessly into a dining area and a contemporary kitchen. The seating area is furnished with a classic plush blue sofa and contrasting armchair, a flat-screen television with cable TV, a Blu-Ray DVD player, Bluetooth speakers, PlayStation 3, and air-conditioning. The lounge sofa can be easily converted into a double bed to accommodate extra guests. The formal dining area has a traditional wood table that seats up to six, with a matching armoire and sideboard. The kitchen comes complete with the latest appliances, including a dishwasher, microwave, oven and hob, coffee machine, and a washer-dryer too. There is also a very convenient guest cloakroom with WC and hand basin.
The villa hosts three beautifully appointed large en-suite double bedrooms, all with air-conditioning and flat screen televisions. The master bedroom is furnished with a fine walnut burr large double bed suite, dressed in white linen, and includes matching bedside and dressing tables, and a crystal chandelier. The en-suite bathroom is home to a hydromassage bath, walk-in shower, hand basin, and WC. The second bedroom is decorated in cool silver grey, a large double bed, an impressive matching wardrobe and side table, and a safety deposit box, with an en-suite walk-in shower room. The third bedroom is decorated in rich gold and cream, furnished with a large double bed, spacious wardrobes, side tables, and an en-suite walk-in shower room.
Villa Meilak sits in its own surrounding ground gardens, where you will find a ten metre plus by five-metre rectangular swimming pool, with a poolside shower, perfect for a few lengths before breakfast, to relax in the sunshine, or cool down after a day’s sightseeing. Sun loungers and shady umbrellas surround the pool, and there is a built-in barbeque for alfresco eating at the eight seaters outdoor dining table. The gardens are well maintained and populated with the natural flora of the island, a pool boy attends twice a week, and best of all for your kids there is a dedicated children’s play area. And if you haven’t worked up a sweat yet, you can do so in the authentic two-tiered seating wooden sauna and its own changing area and bathroom facilities– phew!

The Villa Meilak is nestled in the countryside of the quiet village of Triq Il-Barbieri, near to Zurrieq, on the south of the island, just six kilometres from Malta’s International Airport, eight kilometres from the nearest sandy beach, and within easy distance of three UNESCO World Heritage sites. Steeped in history, Zurrieq is one of Malta’s oldest towns, with records dating back to the fifteenth century and archaeological sites up to three thousand years old. The name Zurrieq means blue in Maltese, and you couldn’t be much closer to the famous Blue Grotto, a collection of sea caverns on the coast, take a trip and explore the caves, by boat is best, but if rock climbing is your thing, you can do that too. Go back in time to the Bronze Age, the Punic era, and Roman rule as you explore tombs, catacombs and cart ruts of Xarolla, Tal-Bakkari and Tal-Hlantun, not to mention the megalithic ruins of the Hagar Qim Temples. Wrestle with the famous five iconic windmills of the area, of which Tax-Xarolla, built-in 1724, it is the only one left that is working. Climb one of the thirteen towers scattered along the coast, don’t miss the WardijaTower, built-in 1659 to protect the island from invaders. Take to the sea in a boat trip to the beach at Pretty Bay, or if you are feeling more adventurous, cross the Mediterranean Sea to the island of Filfla. Make sure you make a visit to the traditional Marsaxlokk fishing village just along the coast.
The capital city of Valetta is just a thirteen kilometre, an easy twenty five minute drive across the island. Valetta is a medieval walled city with a mdina that dates back to the crusading Knights of St John in the 1500’s, and you can still see their influence today, most notably in the beautiful Baroque Roman Catholic St John’s cathedral. Take a walking tour of the city to discover the treasures of Valetta’s many ornate churches, many of them dating back to as early as the Renaissance. Admire the views of the magnificent harbour from the top of the manicured Upper Barrakka Gardens, a park full of local flowers in a landscaped setting, and a daily cannon that reminds everyone when it’s midday and is also fired for religious festivals, anniversaries and visiting dignitaries. Valetta is famous for its fabulous food; take a stroll down ancient streets and discover local restaurants serving traditional Maltese fayre, or live like a local and drink kinnie or a glass of the local wine whilst you people watch from pavement cafes. No trip to Malta is complete without a visit to the beautiful island of Gozo, take boat trip over the water from the north of the island, and explore this rural idyll.

There’s lots for your young ones to see and do across Malta, and as it’s a relatively small island, its easy to access all of the activities. Let’s start at home with the villa that has a PlayStation3 and BlueRay DVD player, a large pool in which to swim and splash, and a dedicated children’s play area in the gardens. The nearest beaches are within walking distance, or take a five minute journey by car to the Blue Grotto, where you can explore the caves, swim and snorkel and for the more adventurous try a bit of rock climbing.
Further afield there’s fun to be had at the Playmobil Fun Park Malta, Birzebbuga, which caters for younger children from babies to toddlers, and four years +, learn through play indoors and outdoors in the pirate themed play area, climb tree houses, cross the hanging bridge and slip down slides. Get on your horse and take a ride on the carousel at Dolfer Hall. For older children let them loose in Bov Adventure Park, where there are climbing frames, water fountains, swings and the perfect place for a picnic. For you little boffins you might want to go to Esplova in the village of Bighi, near Valletta, where they can spend the day interacting with science and technology. Children love Duck Village on Manoel Island, full of miniature houses, and lots of pet animals. See some sea life at the Malta National Aquarium, where forty one tanks are home to over a hundred species of underwater life, not to mention the reptiles, amphibians and insects. See some sea life above ground at the Mediterraneo Marine Park, with performances from dolphins, sea lions and parrots, both educational and entertaining, and if you are really lucky you may also get to swim with the dolphins. Time to get in the water with a visit to Splash & Fun Water Park, with its very own wave pool, lazy river, black hole, and a whole host of other family fun activities.
Malta is famous for its many film sets, and Popeye Village is just one of them, now a family entertainment park, with a play and swim area, boat rides, and animation shows. Take to the water all aboard one of the many family days at sea boat trips, boats leave from the local Weid Iz Zurriez bay, or venture north and go to the beautiful island of Gozo. No trip to Malta would be complete without a day in Valetta, just seven kilometres from the villa, absorb the local history with a walk around the walled city to see the Mdina, take a stroll through the Barrakka Gardens at noon to hear the cannon fire, and enjoy a meal at one of Malta’s many family-friendly restaurants.
