Lefkada, also known as Lefkas, is an island characterized by its lush landscape and stunning beaches. Its hilly terrain is dotted with picturesque villages like Lazarata. Visitors can explore the island's trails by hiking or cycling, taking in the scenic views. Notable sites include Skari Mountain with its ancient oak trees, the Melissa Gorge, the Dafni and Kersia water springs, and Elati Mountain. Along these routes, you will come across historic monasteries, small churches, and charming villages. Karya, a mountain village, is known for its bustling central square shaded by a large tree and its traditional Karysaniki embroidery.
Lazarata, situated northeast of Karya and surrounded by cypress trees and mountainous scenery, is the closest village to Villa Prase. It features two significant churches, Agios Dionissis and Agios Spiridonas, as well as cafes, restaurants, a bakery, and shops. The village is encircled by vineyards, olive groves, citrus plantations, and red-roofed houses. Nearby, the quieter villages of Asprogeratkata, Kavallos, and Pinakochori can be found. Organized mountain bike tours offer a unique way to explore the island, sometimes including visits to the neighbouring island of Meganisi. Despite its beauty, Lefkas remains relatively undiscovered by mass tourism.
Beaches near Villa Prase include Pefkoulia, Milos, and Kathisma. Kathisma Beach, facing the Ionian archipelago, features white sand, turquoise waters, and various beach bars and lounges. Pefkoulia Beach is a popular sandy spot near Agios Nikitas and can be crowded during summer. Other notable beaches on the island include Egremni, known for its striking cliffs, and Porto Katsiki, celebrated for its golden sands and captivating landscape. For windsurfing and kitesurfing, Agios Ioannis and Vassiliki are ideal. Nidri Beach offers organized watersports and amenities.
Nidri is the largest tourist town on the island, followed by Nikiana. Nidri provides a wide range of activities, beautiful beaches, and excellent dining options. It, along with Sivota, is popular for yacht charters and island hopping, with excursion boats available to explore nearby islets and secluded bays. Ferries from Lefkas connect to Ithaca and Kefalonia. The Geni peninsula, a short drive or boat trip from Nidri, features the traditional fishing village of Geni, known for its welcoming waterfront tavernas. The medieval Santa Maura Castle is another interesting site.
For wine enthusiasts, Lefkas Earth offers a taste of local wines, often paired with fresh seafood lunches in scenic locations like Sivota or Vasiliki.
