Villa Miah is located in the lush green rolling hills of the Rethymno countryside amongst picturesque ancient villages and fabulous monuments and buildings from the past. The tiny traditional village of Plevriana is friendly and charming. The nearby village of Margarite is known for its pottery and is very popular and thriving during the summer months. There are many pottery studios where the tradition of pottery goes back many generations. The village boasts some extraordinary architecture along its narrow winding streets. The Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos enjoys frescoes that date back to 1383. You will discover attractive Venetian doorways, Byzantine churches and plenty of cafes. The neighbouring village of Tzanakian is also delightful.

You can visit the ancient Melidoni Cave which enjoys a rich history. Artefacts from the cave are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno. The myths and tales of the cave included the story of Talos, a bronze giant and his encounters with Jason and the Argonauts.  The Eleftherna Tower, a Dorian and later Roman settlement is a historic site surrounded by hills and gorges. The museum and archaeological site opened in June 2016 with historic artefacts from 3000 BC to 1300AD. The Arkadi Monastery is nearby, well worth visiting for its architecture and its compelling stories of Crete’s rebellious history. The 16th-century monastery stands alone on a plateau showcasing Baroque, Renaissance and Roman themes. The monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and the Saints Constantine and Helen. You can also visit the Monastery of Preveli and the Monastery of Arsaniou. The Ideon Cave, on the east side of Mount Ida, is also fascinating as according to mythology it is where Zeus grew up. The village of Spili offers a pretty water fountain with lion’s heads.

The tranquil village of Sfakaki is a lovely, friendly resort which enjoys some good shops, a bakery, tavernas, cafes, bars and restaurants. The beach is wonderful with a long sweep of sand and lots of sun loungers and parasols. The beach is home to sea turtles that you might see if you are lucky. If you stick around for sunset or head up to your terraced balcony, you will be rewarded with brilliant sunsets that cast a dazzling red and orange glow across the sea. The village is surrounded by countryside and there are plenty of other beaches close by.

Rethymno is a wonderful city with beautiful architecture, much charm, a lively port and plenty of tourist amenities. You will pass by a fabulous helping of interesting shops and delicious restaurants to reach the Old Town which is crammed with ancient buildings. Whilst offering much to tourists, Rethymno has maintained its authentic Greek feel. You can head for the Venetian Fortezza to admire this amazing sand-coloured citadel perched high above the shoreline and stroll among the fragrant pine trees that lead you past ornate chapels and churches. The architecture throughout Rethymno is very elegant and the port is bustling, lined with restaurants and bars. There are many boat trips that you can take.

Plakias is another wonderfully popular resort. You can pass through the breathtaking Kourtaliotiko Gorge arriving at the idyllic stunning bay of Plakias with its brilliant blue sea. Plakias is a former fishing village and now offers some wonderful tavernas, restaurants and bars.

The Palace of Knossos is where according to legend, the foundations of the Bronze Age city were filled with an inescapable labyrinth that was guarded by a vicious minotaur. The master craftsman Daedalus built the labyrinth for the mythical King Minos. His son, Theseus, slew the minotaur and found his way out of the labyrinth with the help of Minos’ daughter, Ariadne, according to legend. The palace flourished during the Minoan period as the religious centre of Crete. Thanks to the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans’ excavation and careful restoration, the Palace of Knossos is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Greece.

Rethymno is a city rich in history and entertainment. There are so many monuments for children to spot from the Renaissance and Venetian times. With spectacular views of the city and the sea, the Fortezza is a great place for kids. They love wandering around and travelling back in time to the era when this fortress protected the city from pirates and other invaders. The Old Town has a 4km long boulevard perfect for cycling. You can hire bikes and cycle along. The beaches of Rethymno are fabulous so you can stop there or at one of the beach bars for refreshments.

Children love their days on the beach. There are plenty of beaches within easy reach including Panormo, Koukistres, Spilies, Preveli, Damnoni, Plakias, Rodakino and Triopetra. You will be mesmerised by their natural beauty and crystal-clear water. Preveli Beach is 40km south of Rethymno and is one of the most idyllic beaches. It feels like an exotic lagoon with its oasis of palm trees and greenish waters. The Kourtaliotis River ends at this breathtaking beach that is surrounded by lush greenery. The beach can get crowded in high season so you could combine your trip with a visit to the Preveli Monastery and walk from there or visit via a fishing boat from Plakias or Agia Galini. Bali Beach is another Cretan wonder. It is just fabulous and there is a dive school, the Hippocampus Dive Centre that will take you on introductory dives as well as scuba courses. You will see colourful underwater sealife including beautiful seahorses.

Crete is famous for its olive oil and you can visit the Paraschakis Olive Oil Factory to learn about its three generations of production. The old mill was run by a donkey. Visitors can taste and buy the oil, enjoy a guided tour and even taste some raki. There are also some wonderful wineries to visit where you can explore the vineyards, learn about the production and taste some of the delicious wines.
