A magnet for bird watchers, hikers and nature lovers, Kissamos has also established itself as somewhat of an centre for eco-tourism. There are also lots of sightseeing opportunities in the town. You can visit the Archaeological Museum of Kissamos with a fantastic selection of artefacts from the Hellenic and Roman eras; or take a walk down Skalidi street to wonder at the architecture and explore local artisan craft shops. If you fancy going on an excursion, you can also hop on a ferry from the harbour in Kissamos to visit Kithira, Peloponenese and Piraeus. Or take a cruise around Gramvousa and the famous Balos Lagoon.
Love a day at the beach? The island of Crete has some amazing beaches such as Falarsana – one of the most stunning beaches in the Mediterranean –; Episkopi and Petres which are popular with younger crowds; exotic Elafonisi to the south-west of Chania; the unmissable palm forest beach in Vai; and Agios Pavlos in the south with its huge sand dunes.
