You’re close to Chania which you absolutely must visit. Chania itself is renowned for its heavy Venetian influence – think enchanting narrow streets, charming waterfront restaurants and a classic Venetian harbour. You can also do some sightseeing. Enjoy exploring the 16th-century lighthouse which is enhanced by Egyptian and Ottoman influences as well as Venetian. The Nautical Museum is well worth a trip if you’d enjoy learning more about the naval history of the area brought to life with a series of objects, photographs and model ships. You may also wish to pay a visit to the former monastery of St. Frances. Don’t miss Chania’s Minoa’s World – an interactive and immersive 9D experience that highlights the ancient civilisation of Greece. You might also wish to check out the large town of Rethymnon – a very pretty town home to the Historical and Folklore Museum.
There are a huge array of beaches for you to explore. For jaw-dropping scenery, plan a trip to Balos and Elafonisi. They are famed for their striking lagoons as well as their beaches. With a car to hand the island of Crete becomes much more accessible and there’s a great deal to explore whether your interest is history, culture, the natural world, surrendering to the sun, swimming, enjoying water sports or making it all about the food. You can also enjoy a wild night scene here in Chania should you desire to let loose. Crete is an island that can meet any interest and any desire. It’s a big island with lots of personality.
