What an amazing place. The house has a unique beauty.

We booked the chateau when renovation was still going on. Initially, I felt nervous, but upon arrival, I was stunned: what an amazing place. The house has a unique beauty and I love how the owners have blended the antique with modern cons. Everything...

Château de la Source is a quintessential French château in Provence that lies near the foot of the iconic Mont Ventoux, set in a beautifully landscaped park with ancient oak trees, pines and the gentle sounds of birds or cicadas alongside a private swimming pool fed by a natural spring.

Inside, a blend of worldliness and heritage comes to life. Lovingly restored by owners with global roots, the interiors marry handpicked family antiques with vibrant French fabrics from Pierre Frey, Zoffany and Lelievre. Every corner tells a story. The Grand Salon invites lingering conversations whilst the garden gallery is anchored by a Schiedmayer baby grand piano. The kitchen, expertly equipped for preparing leisurely meals or for formal occasions, complements the potager, where herbs, vegetables and fresh eggs from the henhouse await each morning. Dine beneath centuries-old plane trees on the south terrace, paved in Provençal pink stone, or gather beside the vast fireplace in the intimate dining room, where you can feast together.

Up to 10 guests can stay in comfort, with all bedrooms air-conditioned and most offering marble-clad en-suites featuring sleek Grohe fittings. Each room is a haven in itself, furnished with ‘And So To Bed’ beds, divan mattresses and thoughtful touches such as crisp white linen and high-thread Egyptian cotton towels.

Just over 1km away, the charming medieval village of Mazan offers morning trips for croissants, afternoon café stops and restaurants. Here, you are immersed in real Provence, yet never far from the rest of the world with pretty Vaucluse villages and towns within easy reach such as Venasque, Bédoin and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

Back at the château, take a stroll through the walled garden and forest, cool off in the swimming pool sourced from a natural spring, play a game of boules on the pétanque court and look out for crayfish and hungry nutrias by the ponds.

As dusk falls, the owl calls across the grounds and the stars seem impossibly close. The world outside recedes. Château de la Source is more than a place to stay - it is a return to something rare, rooted and quietly extraordinary.

What you should know

  • The château gardien/caretaker lives on site in an independent apartment.
  • Air-conditioning is featured in bedrooms only.
  • If staying with children, supervision is required across the beautiful grounds due to the lakes, canal and freshwater spring (and swimming pool of course, even with its safety alarm).
  • You can walk to the local village just over 1km away (along the main road, of which the first 200m does not have a pavement), however a car is still needed to be able to stock up on groceries and explore this beautiful region.
