Overview
Brightness and character pervade this charming maison in Languedoc. Take a walk through the grounds, where dappled sunlight plays across your path down to the river at the end of the garden. The private pool encourages basking all day, while at night the chandelier in the sitting room will twinkle over you and your loved ones. You'll especially love the relaxed and newly renovated kitchen where the whole family can dine.
This holiday home is located 15 minutes drive outside of the walled city of Carcassonne, your jumping-off point to the region. Limoux is also a short drive away with its lovely market on a Monday as well as some excellent restaurants.

You can walk to a butcher in the village which also sells fresh bread or within a 10-minute drive is another village with an excellent boulangerie and grocery shop. Restaurants can be found in Cavanac (6km) as well as Limoux (15km) and Carcassonne (13km), also the home to larger supermarkets.
There is a local train station a short walk away, just outside the village, with departures to both Limoux and Carcassonne, ideal for a leisurely lunch out with good wine and also essential if you plan to visit Carcassonne for the famous 14th July celebrations.
The village also has a tennis court, a public swimming pool and there's a lovely horse-riding school just a short walk away. Bike-hire can be arranged locally whilst other activities in the region include fishing, canoeing, cycling and wonderful walks. Golf lovers don’t have to travel far to play at the highly-regarded Golf de Carcassonne, just 15 minutes away by car.
This location is also wonderful for visiting the many Cathar castles, idyllic Languedoc villages, vineyards offering wine-tasting in beautiful surroundings and the Mediterranean beaches which can be reached in just over an hour.
Even the Spanish border is just a couple of hours away!
One of the main highlights is of course the fairy-tale ancient city of old Carcassonne (13km), a must for young and old alike. A restored medieval fortress, this town is rich in historic treasures and culture and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit on a Saturday morning for the wonderful market. Even the newer part of town is worth a visit for its many shops for a change of scene.
Limoux (15km) is also a fantastic place - look out for festivities during your stay and lots going on in the summer here and in surrounding villages. Visit on a Monday morning for the weekly market and make sure you try some of the many good restaurants.
Another great day out is historic Mirepoix (45km) with its charming Monday morning market whilst further afield other highlights of the Languedoc region and beyond include Pézenas, Roquebrun, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Minerve and even the ‘rose’ city of Toulouse.

Region
Whilst most visitors flock to Carcassonne for its fortified citadel, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is so much to experience across the historic city and its beautiful surroundings.
It goes without saying that the great highlight of Carcassonne is Europe’s largest walled fortress with its warren of winding lanes with cafes and little shops alongside its impressive towers and ramparts – guided tours along the city walls can be arranged. It feels like a fairytale for young and old with knights in armour, horse-drawn carriage rides and fascinating museums.
Look out for festivities and events throughout the year, the most famous being July’s Festival de Carcassonne with cultural and musical events taking place across the city. What’s more, the Bastille Day fireworks are some of the most magnificent in France.
Beyond the citadel, cross the Aude River and soak up the vibrant ambience of Le Bastide de Saint-Louis, a bustling neighbourhood with its own rich heritage. Start at Place Carnot with its café terraces, impressive fountain and wonderful market three mornings or head straight to the gourmet stalls of Les Halles’ covered market. Dine out in atmospheric restaurants serving the best regional cuisine perhaps accompanied by a glass of Minervois, Corbières or other excellent wine from the vineyards surrounding the Cité de Carcassonne.
Then there’s the tranquility of the city's Le Canal du Midi just perfect to explore on foot, by bike or via boat. In one direction you can cycle along the canalside towpath to Castelnaudary, famed for its pretty marina and restaurants serving cassoulet. On another day head east towards Trèbes, Homps, Argens-Minervois and other picture-perfect wine villages across the Hérault’s Minerve region, the perfect trip out from your Carcassonne holiday home.
Kids
Best Suited For: TeensThe village has its own tennis court, a public swimming pool for a change of scene as well as an equestrian centre just a short walk away.
Both young and old will adore the fortified city of Carcassonne whether exploring the fortified fortress, walking around the walls and discovering the winding lanes and museums within the old city. La Maison de la Chevalerie and a little museum about French schools in the 1900s are two museums to look out for with younger kids.
The Canal du Midi is also a wonderful spot for walking, cycling along the tow paths and taking a boat trip. There are also some lovely walks by the River Aude – little ones can stop off at the playground in Jardin Bellevue or have a family picnic across the over side of the river in Parc De Camin del Garric.
Check out all sorts of seasonal activities on nearby Lac Cavayère (18km), just south-east of Carcassonne, where you will find a tree-top activity centre, mini-golf, a supervised beach, watersports and an inflatable water-park.
Look out for all sorts of festivities in the summer in Limoux and the surrounding villages. Just south of Limoux, young dinosaur lovers should check out the Dinosauria museum in Espéraza whilst there are canoeing opportunities in Quillan, around 45-minutes by car.

Annette
How long have you owned the property?
10 years.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The pool, the river and the house probably in that order.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
We went to France with a budget to buy a holiday home, the first house we were brought to was Domaine Horte and it was over double the budget, but we just fell in love with it. It was owned by a lovely Dutch couple who reached their 80's and their family wanted them to return to Rotterdam. Very reluctantly they left. They said they had 14 wonderfully happy years there. We discovered a summer or two ago that there is an environmentally area to the left of the house now owned by a man whose family had once owned the Domaine. I think he thinks he is going to own it again one day. He was interesting because he could explain certain things in the house and why it is laid out as it is. You will see what I mean if you decide to visit.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Apart from my friends who think they are all famous!
What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
We had a problem with the pool. Previous guests had allowed plastic into the pool which discoloured the water. The guests arrived the pool was not glistening as is advertised. The children looked dismayed. Our wonderful manager Bev, explained the problem to the guests, said she would have it sorted in 24 hours and she did. Bev will do every thing possible so long as she is advised to rectify any issue in the shortest possible time.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Visit the fortified town of Carcasonne.
Really eat?
Visit the Domaine de Gayda Restaurant, Winery and Wine Education Centre.
Really see?
Visit the Cathar Castles.
Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
The salon is a great place to unwind. Put on some music, light some candles, pour a glass of wine and hey presto!
