Location
About the surrounding area of Maison CorailMaison Corail is located just across the Gulf of Saint-Tropez from the famous town. It is a prestigious area with stunning views, a fabulous array of restaurants, cafés and bars and a soothing air of calm. You can even take a parasailing trip to enjoy the dramatic Les Maures mountain range and the Esterel red rocks. Sainte-Maxime is a fabulous place with over 11km of fine sandy beaches and crystal clear, turquoise waters where you can try your hand at water skiing, jet skiing, paddle boards, fly boards and some inflatables. You will discover a lively square where you can enjoy supper under plane trees, enjoying the warm and welcoming ambience that Sainte-Maxime is so proud of. There are six public beaches close by, idyllic settings for a relaxing holiday and gourmet break. The historical town centre offers a warren of cobbled lanes lined with unique shops, monuments and fantastic gastro restaurants. There are some wonderful festivals and events including the Sainte-Maxime Free Flight World Masters, the Var Rally, the Mimosa Floral Parade, Christmas and New Year festivities and various trade shows.
Saint Tropez came to fame in the 1950s with Brigitte Bardot starring in the 1956 ‘And God Created Woman’. Overnight, Saint-Tropez became a sizzling jet-set playground though in low season the town still enjoys its mesmerising quaint beauty and visitors meander its cobbled lanes in the old fishing quarter of La Ponche, sip Pastis in charming cafés, watch old men playing pétanque beneath towering plane trees and walk slowly along the coastal paths. Long before Brigitte Bardot’s time, Saint Tropez was attracting artists and becoming the summer exhibition of Paris’ Left Bank. The likes of Picasso, Juliette Greco, Boris Vian and Sartre were arriving. The picturesque peninsula boasts beautiful olive groves and rugged coastal hikes and is now home to exclusive beach clubs, hipster bars and yachts. A five kilometre stretch of picture postcard sand sits between the glistening Mediterranean Sea and dreamy dunes.
The Old Town of Saint Tropez, next to the Vieux Port, is a brilliant place to explore.
The 18th century Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption towers over the terracotta rooftops. The Musée de l'Annonciade is the oldest modern art museum in France, dating back to 1922. The Citadel was built between 1590 and 1607 to defend the coastline against pirates and other attackers. The simple Provençal style Chapelle Ste-Anne is located on the top of a hill in a residential area above Place des Lices. It was built in 1618 and made pop culture history in 1971 when Mick Jagger married Bianca after a civil ceremony in the Town Hall.
Saint Tropez is a shopper’s paradise, packed with trendy boutiques. The streets around Rue Gambetta and Rue Allard are sprinkled with shoe shops, chocolate shops, boutiques, antique emporiums, and art galleries. If you visit on a Tuesday or Saturday morning, you will be treated to marvellous open-air stalls at Place des Lices where you can stock up on freshly baked bread and delicious local produce. Fine wine is big in Saint Tropez. Château Barbeyrolles is one of the best vineyards in the village of Gassin. Red and white wines have been added to their delicious rose wines and visitors can taste and buy wines every day except Sundays.
The Saint-Tropez peninsula is home to numerous charming villages as well as a fantastic national park that you should explore. La Croix-Valmer, in the heart of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, is a jewel of nature nestled in the national park, an area known for its walking, cycling and mountain bike paths, its scenic landscapes, amazing fauna and flora, breathtaking views, lively Sunday market and its surrounding vineyards. La Croix-Valmer boasts two of the three caps of the Saint Tropez peninsula. Cap Lardier is the most wooded of the caps and Cap Taillat sits between Cap Lardier and Cap Camarat, the third of the caps. Visitors enjoy amazing views and can explore the vineyards and historical remains in the area. There are more than one hundred and twenty species of birds, Hermann’s turtles, European pond terrapin, ocellated lizards, cotton grasshoppers and serrated magpies. The village of La Croix-Valmer enjoys a history closely linked to the wine industry. Its weekly market is one of the most famous in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and a brilliant place to pick up local produce and wine for Maison Corail.
The picturesque villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle are also worth visiting, with far reaching sensational views. The historic village of Gassin, known as a ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ and a destination of culture and walking, is perched high in the hills enjoying a fabulous medieval terrace, the Pomenade De Barri which offers exceptional views as well as some superb restaurants, an unbeatable spot for lunch. You should look out for the street called l’Androuno, claimed to be the narrowest street in the world. The delicious smell of jasmine hangs in the air throughout the village, and especially in the garden L’Hardy-Denonain. The new town of Gassin, designed by François Spoerry, has been built below the medieval village and was awarded a prize for the best new town in Europe. Finally, the lovely Port Grimaud, very close to the villa, is reminiscent of Venice.

Once a traditional fishing village, Saint-Tropez is now one of the most glamourous destinations of the Côte d’Azur and welcomes visitors from across the world.
However, there’s more to Saint-Tropez bay than exclusive beach clubs, glitzy boutiques and fine dining restaurants. From the family-friendly beaches of Sainte-Maxime to the vineyards of La Croix Valmer, Oliver’s Travels guests can truly admire this enchanting corner of the French Riviera whilst staying in one of our handpicked villas in and around Saint-Tropez.
Soak up the luxurious yet laidback vibe of Saint-Tropez as you wander around its marina lined with huge yachts contrasting colourful fishermen’s houses overlooking the bay. The old quarter is a warren of winding lanes with French designer boutiques, picturesque cafes and restaurants whilst Place des Lices hosts a vibrant Provençal market on a Tuesday and Saturday morning. Enjoy the most glorious vistas from Saint-Tropez’s 17th century citadel and maritime museum. Boat trips are another superb way to tour this part of the coast and passenger ferries cross the bay.
Just south of the town, follow Brigitte Bardot’s footsteps as you visit one of Plage de Pampelonne’s exclusive beach clubs, the most famous being Le Club 55 (always book well in advance). Stretching over 5km, Pampelonne’s long sandy beach is also loved for its vast range of summer watersports including jet-skiing, windsurfing and paddleboarding.
The picture-perfect villages of Saint-Tropez bay are beautifully located to make the most of the French Riviera scenery. On the hillside overlooking Plage de Pampelonne, Ramatuelle has attracted artists and writers over the years and is full of charm – look out for performances during its theatre and jazz festivals in the summer months. Meanwhile, hilltop Gassin is classified as one of France’s 'Plus Beaux Villages’ whilst flower-filled Grimaud is such a pretty medieval village with yet more stunning views of the coast.
Driving into the Maures hills, discover the characterful villages of La Garde-Freinet and Le Plan-de-la-Tour surrounded by oak and chestnut forests, a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, horse-riding enthusiasts and other outdoor adventurists.
Back to the coast, take a boat tour of Port Grimaud, known as the ‘little Venice of the Côte d’Azur’, and experience its atmospheric Monday evening summer market. Across the other side of the bay, Sainte-Maxime is a lovely sheltered seaside town with pretty cafes, a daily market and gorgeous beaches. Families adore this area – there are tree-top adventures, tennis, mini-golf, a water park and coastal paths for biking and hiking.
Golf-lovers can appreciate a choice of courses – Golf Blue Green as well as the prestigious Beauvallon Golf Club and Golf Club Saint-Tropez. Wine connoisseurs should head to the wine châteaux of Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne as well as the vineyards of La Croix Valmer.
Not forgetting the idyllic shores of soft sand and crystal-clear sea of La Croix Valmer’s coastline from Plage de Sylvabelle to Plage de Gigaro, also home to a wonderful coastal walking trail with the most incredible flora and fauna alongside sensational views of the Mediterranean as you hike towards Cap Lardier and beyond.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesAqualand Saint-Maxime is brilliant fun for children and very close to the villa. It is a thrilling waterpark offering a wonderful array of slides, rides and fun pools for the whole family including rapids, kamikaze slides, colour splash, the flying boat, magic slide and crazy race. There are other attractions including a surf beach, a children’s paradise and a lagoon paradise.
In Saint-Tropez children enjoy visiting the Citadel above the harbour. It is enormous and boasts fabulous views all around the bay. Proud of its rich maritime past, Saint-Tropez created a modern maritime museum in the dungeon of the town’s citadel, allowing visitors to discover the daily lives of men and women who shaped the Saint-Tropez of today. The town also boasts a butterfly museum - La Maison des Papillons - with more than 35,000 butterflies from all over the world. There are rare species from South America and Africa. The museum is just a few steps south of the northern marina. Saint-Tropez is also fantastic for people watching and celebrity spotting. Children will love joining in and also looking at the millionaire yachts.
There are some amazing beaches close to the villa including Plage de la Croisette and Plage de la Nartell. A big favourite on the other side of the gulf and close to Saint-Tropez is the Pampelonne beach. The peninsula is laden with gorgeous coves and fine sand. You can head to Gigaro and Debarquement beaches which are organised and boast some excellent cafés and restaurants while others are quiet and peaceful. There are some excellent watersports on offer. The coastal paths are superb, offering exceptional panoramic views and a way of getting to pretty coves that you might not otherwise see.
The amusement park, Azur Park, in Gassin is very popular. It boasts more than thirty five thrilling rides and attractions. These include trampolines, carousels, toboggans and many others for little ones, bumper boats, river slides, 5D cinema and plenty of others for slightly older kids and some extreme attractions for teens and older. There are two prehistoric animal themed 18-hole mini golf courses for four to twelve year olds and a great café.
A few miles north of Saint-Tropez is Luna Park Fréjus, a seasonal funfair with an array of rides and attractions for kids and adults. You will discover traditional carousels, rollercoasters, bumper cars and a ghost train. The acrobatic adventure park in Grimaud, Grimaud Aventure, gets the adrenaline pumping amongst the treetops and fun obstacles. There are climbing ladders, jumps, rope bridges and a zipline, all perfect for children aged three to ten.
Children enjoy the markets for produce and little souvenirs. Saint Tropez’ markets are fabulous and the Sunday market in La Croix-Valmer is great too. La Croix-Valmer is very lively on market day and there are some lovely restaurants and cafés. During the summer months, children also enjoy the entertainment and performances on offer.
A popular family excursion is to take the ferry to the island of Porquerolles. It is only a ten minute boat ride away from the coast. This crescent shaped island enjoys a charming village at its centre with some exquisite restaurants and bike rental. The best way to explore Porquerolles is hiking or cycling on the marked trails of the national park. On the southern side, the coast is made up of steep cliffs and secluded creeks while the northern side is a little like a Caribbean island with fine sandy beaches and turquoise water.
