Set across an impressive 650 square metres, the interiors balance architectural character with contemporary comfort - this unique home dates back to the late 1960s and has been recently renovated to an impressive standard. A generous living area and dining room open seamlessly onto a vast sea-facing terrace, an idyllic spot to watch the sunset as evening nears. A fully equipped kitchen invites long, sociable meals both indoors and out, while five gorgeous double bedrooms, including a grand master suite with an incredible ocean vista, ensure comfort for up to 10 guests (plus 5 children). Younger visitors will adore the sixth bedroom, a dedicated dorm-style bunk-bed room that adds a playful touch, whilst a games lounge offers space to unwind.

Wellbeing takes centre stage here. A spa area with indoor jacuzzi, sauna and a hammam shower creates a restorative retreat, with doors opening to the heated outdoor swimming pool that invites leisurely afternoons together. Every detail has been considered to enhance relaxation, from the quality of the materials to the thoughtful layout of each space. Located in Brétignolles-sur-Mer on the Vendée coast, the setting combines wonderful beaches, dunes and scenic coastal paths with easy access to lively seaside towns such as Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Les Sables-d’Olonne. The area is known for its water sports, local markets and relaxed coastal atmosphere, all within a preserved natural environment. There are two bedrooms on the entrance level of the villa (one double and one children’s bedroom), however guests do need to be able to manage some steps across this floor (as well as the public staircase down to the beach next to the villa).

Location

Perched above the beachfront in the charming Vendée seaside resort of Brétignolles-sur-Mer, Villa La Corniche offers an exceptional coastal setting where the rhythm of the ocean defines each day.

With sweeping sea views and direct access to the edge of the beach below (via public stairs to the side of the villa), this is a place to savour golden sunsets and the soothing sounds and scents of the Atlantic coastline. The long beach itself is sandy and wide at low tide with rocky parts, as well as a small handful of beachside restaurants (open seasonally) – it’s an especially popular beach in the summer months and can be lively. Do note that at high tide, part or sometimes all of the beach is submerged – a wonderful experience from your very own ocean-facing terrace.

There are other seasonal amenities dotted in the neighbourhood close to the villa, around 450m on foot, or you can wander to the centre of Brétignolles-sur-Mer (1.8km) in around 25 minutes (or via a leisurely cycle ride). Browse the vibrant local market held on Thursdays and Sundays, sample regional produce or hire bikes to explore the network of scenic coastal paths winding through dunes and marshland (concierge can help with bike hire as well as horse-riding and boat trips). There is a handy Vival grocery store 700m away as well as a larger supermarket in central Brétignolles-sur-Mer.

A short drive brings you to Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (10km), a lively fishing port famed for its sardines and bustling marina. Wander along the harbour, dine in traditional seafood restaurants, or simply enjoy the maritime charm. Slightly further afield, Les Sables-d’Olonne (19km) offers long sandy beaches, elegant promenades and a rich cultural scene, making it perfect for a day out by the sea.

Nature lovers will appreciate the nearby Marais salants de l’île d’Olonne, where salt marshes create a unique landscape rich in birdlife and local heritage. For a memorable excursion, head to Noirmoutier-en-l’Île (around an hour by car), an island renowned for its picturesque villages, coves and the famous Passage du Gois.

For a change of pace, the vibrant city of Nantes (90km) offers striking architecture, cultural landmarks and excellent dining. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or exploration, this stretch of the Vendée coast provides a wonderfully diverse setting.

Getting to and around

From the Loire estuary to cosmopolitan La Rochelle and historic Saintes, this part of the Atlantic coast and its surroundings attract visitors who come for the region’s superb beaches, charming market towns, delicious oysters and rich history.

Starting just south of the fine city of Nantes, the Marais wetlands are a paradise for keen bird watchers and the perfect place for peaceful nature walks, cycle rides and canoeing through the marshes. Then there’s the blue-flag beaches, seaside resorts and fishing villages of the Côte de Jade alongside walking paths, cycling trails and horse-riding opportunities. The sunsets along this part of the coastline are especially idyllic.

The Atlantic island of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île is loved for its vast beaches, sand dunes and watersports. Admire its incredible landscapes, dig for shellfish, learn about the history of the island’s salt production and cycle to your hearts content passing historic sites, forests, salt marshes and coast – stop off for oysters en route for an authentic island experience.

Back to the mainland, discover characterful markets in the likes of Machecoul, Challans and La Roche-sur-Yon with Vendée specialities including beef, pork, Challans poultry, oysters, mussels, sardines, salt, white beans and a great range seasonal fruit and vegetables.

The Atlantic beaches of the Vendée coastline are wonderful, ideal for surfing and other water-based adventures, many backed by endless nature and woodland. La Tranche-sur-Mer has earned its ‘Famille Plus’ designation with its blue-flag beach, attractive promenade and family-friendly activities. For a change of scene, explore Le Marais Poitevin by boat and appreciate it’s magnificent natural surroundings -it's known as the ‘Green Venice’,

Puy du Fou is another highlight of this region, often considered one of the best theme parks in the world with its immersive adventures, period villages and spectacular shows.

Further south, passing La Rochelle and the wonderful islands of Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron, head inland in the Charente Maritime and spend time in the historic town of Saint-Jean-d'Angely with its Abbaye Royale, a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the Santiago de Compostela route.

Historians will also adore the 11th century Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes. The city’s old quarter is a joy to explore whilst the Roman amphitheatre and Basilique Saint Eutrope de Saintes, another UNESCO World Heritage site, are a must-see during your time. End your day with a cruise along the Charente, a picturesque river that continues east towards Cognac, Jarnac and the vibrant city of Angoulême.
