Located a short distance north of the Cape Greco Peninsula, Protaras is known as the beach capital of the country. There are loads of them – and yet more beautiful scenery is within easy reach.

A popular spot for snorkelling and swimming, stunning Cape Greco is famed for its enticing Blue Lagoon. The dramatic sea caves are another big draw for visitors, with boat tours available to show you these coastal gems. Look out for the Cape Greco lighthouse marking Cyprus’ south-easternmost point.

The resort of Protaras forms part of the larger town of Paralimni. Many wonderful beaches line the coast around this area, such as the famous Fig Tree Bay, Turtle Bay, Green Bay and Konnos Beach. You will find lots of opportunities to try various water-sports, such as scuba-diving or jet-skiing, and good local amenities – an area this popular has plenty of bars and restaurants.

Fig Tree Bay’s reputation precedes it – voted one of the best beaches in Europe, it can get crowded. Much quieter options are not far away, such as Serena Bay, Agia Triada and Golden Beach. Boat trips and catamaran cruises are popular excursions, running regularly from Protaras. Alternatively, organised food tours can take you into the mountains to sample delicacies from the area, such as the local honey, cheese and wine.

The area offers some wonderful hiking opportunities through areas of natural beauty, including the Cape Greco National Park. Look out for established trails like the Aphrodite Trail which will guide you towards the best bits, taking in forests, sea caves and historic monuments.

There is also much to see in nearby Ayia Napa. Far more than a clubber’s paradise, this resort has some surprises up its sleeve. Look out for the beautifully preserved 16th-century monastery and the relatively recently discovered Makronissos Tombs, to get a feel for Ayia Napa’s history. It’s also big on family fun, with a water-park, amusement parks and sea-faring attractions like a Yellow Submarine sure to keep kids entertained.

Famed for its annual Lavender Festival, the beautiful CyHerbia Botanical Park is another of the region’s top attractions, just a 20-minute drive from Ayia Napa, while the fascinating Thalassa Museum pays an impressive tribute to the sea. Head closer to the airport at Larnaca and you can also discover the Camel Park and natural treasures like the Larnaca Salt Lake.
