With open views across the Adriatic and nearby islands, Villa Gara enjoys an elevated position in the village of Gornje Sitno, just over 20 minutes from Split and the beaches of the Dalmatian Coast. Designed and built by its owner, the villa offers a comfortable, well-considered space that works particularly well for families or small groups.

The outdoor areas are designed for long, easy days in the sun. A 36sqm heated swimming pool sits at the heart of the terrace, surrounded by loungers and complemented by an outdoor shower. The hot tub is perfectly placed to make the most of the sea views, especially in the evening when the terrace is softly lit. A covered dining area links directly to the house, creating an easy flow for outdoor meals, while a hammock, barbecue and children’s play area add to the relaxed feel. Guests may also have the chance to enjoy seasonal produce from the vegetable garden.

Inside, the living room with fireplace opens into a dining space for six and a fully equipped kitchen. Upstairs, two double bedrooms and a bunk bedroom share a family bathroom and access to an upper terrace - an ideal spot for a quiet drink at sunset.

Location

Croatia’s second city, Split rivals many capitals when it comes to historic and cultural must-sees. Likely to be on your list are Diocletian’s Palace and Saint Domnius’ Cathedral, but there is so much more, with no shortage of beautiful squares and buildings, plus the Riva waterfront and breathtaking Marjan Hills. The coast which stretches out east of the city has many more delights in store, including scenic Stobreč and Jesenice.

Perched on the Adriatic, Split boasts beautiful sunsets, exciting cuisine, great art and tons of history. Among its big draws are the Split Gallery of Fine Arts, Archaeological Museum and the Mestrovic Gallery, showcasing the work of the country’s greatest sculptor.

Right on the tip of the peninsula, the expansive green spaces of the Marjan Forest Park are another great reason to visit, while tours out to see the wonderful waterfalls of Krka are also justly popular. The Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace are perhaps the Split’s best-known attraction, and guided walking tours of this and other local landmarks are a great way to get a feel for the city. Look out too for Republic Square, where many cultural events take place, and Split’s main beach, Bacvice. You will probably spot some people standing in the water playing the famous local ball game, Picigin.

Within a 30-minute drive of the city are Stobreč, Podstrana and Jesenice. All are worth stopping for – as the beauty of the Adriatic is always worth admiring. Look out for the wooden ships at Jesenice, which can take you on a pleasurable journey, perhaps towards nearby Omiš or the island of Brač. If you make it to Omiš, just a little further, you’ll be in the adrenaline sports capital of the area, with spectacular zip-wire and water-sports adventures all part of this historic town’s modern-day appeal.

The heart of Split is the historic Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world. Built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, this massive complex now forms the nucleus of the city. Within the palace walls, you'll discover a labyrinth of narrow streets, charming squares, and historic buildings. The Peristyle, an open-air courtyard, is a central gathering place, and both the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and the Temple of Jupiter showcase remarkable examples of ancient architecture. Just a short walk from the from the centre of Split is Marjan Hill, a pristine nature park that offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city streets. The park features lush greenery, jogging trails, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the city and the sea. It's an ideal place for hiking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of the Mediterranean.

The Split region offers a variety of beautiful beaches. Bacvice and Ovcice are two popular choices conveniently located near the city centre. The sandy shores are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and trying your hand at the local beach sport, picigin. Exploring further along the coast, you'll find numerous rocky coves and pebble beaches, each with their own unique charm.

For adventure seekers, Split offers a wide array of outdoor activities and water sports. From kayaking and paddle-boarding to sailing and scuba diving, there's something for everyone who wants to experience the Adriatic up close.
