Location
About the surrounding area of Villa LilianSomewhat quieter than many of Croatia’s coastal spots, Imotski is an inland gem with character and authenticity. The beautiful Blue and Red Lakes – just two of several around the area – are its biggest tourist draw, but you will also find a compact, charming town with attractive old buildings and plenty of café terraces.
The rugged surroundings of Imotski’s famed lakes make them more visually breath-taking than most. While the steep ascent to the scarily deep Red Lake makes it inaccessible, it is possible to go for a swim in the Blue Lake, and many do. Combine the lakes with the glorious Biokovo Nature Park and you can appreciate the true beauty of the area. The local terrain is great for cycling and hiking, while the Vrljika River is ideal for kayaking. If you do head into the mountains, be sure to stop by the Biokovo Skywalk, a glass platform which gives you the most superb view of the region.
Imotski plays its part in Dalmatia’s fantastic food and wine scene, with local wine varieties and speciality dishes well worth trying. Kujundžuša and Trnjak are both made from grapes grown in the area’s vineyards, along with more familiar wines. You may be able to arrange a wine tour to sample some of the area’s food and wine for yourself – there are also quite a few good restaurants in town.
If you want to head for the beach, you can travel down to Baška Voda in around 30 minutes. The shaded pebble beaches, accompanied by beach bars and cafés, give this former fishing village a relaxed feel. Just off the lovely Punta Rata Beach at Brela is a real photo opportunity – the Brela Stone. This eye-catching rock in the sea, complete with trees growing on top, is the local landmark, and the beach itself is considered one of the best in the area.
A 15-minute drive down the coast, you’ll find Makarska. With the amazing backdrop of Mount Biokovo, this is a popular resort with families and those seeking good nightlife (it even has a club in a cave). During the summer, the weekly Fishermen’s Nights are a popular occasion to add to your schedule, with fresh fish, local wine and music creating a great vibe.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChildren are sure to love Imotski. Its stunning lakes and mountainous surroundings give it plenty of appeal to nature lovers, while the town itself is a relaxing place to chill in a café or enjoying a music festival like the eclectic Magic Time Vinyl Festival. There is always great food at the pizzerias and, on an Imotski City Day, even partying in the streets. Of course, the Blue and Red Lakes are the town’s most breath-taking sights, and certainly unmissable.
Alternatively, head south to the mountains of the Biokovo National Park and take in the beauty of the Makarska Riviera from the Biokovo Skywalk. A big, glass platform that extends out into nothingness, it’s a little bit scary but offers gorgeous views all around, even beneath your feet. Happily, there are handrails to cling on to.
Makarska is a popular place for families, and the Observatory and Astro Park is one of the highlights. Go after dark to take a look up to the stars through the powerful telescope. The beach is not far away, and you can enjoy a walk along the promenade with its cafés and ice cream parlours to provide treats. If you fancy doing some island-hopping, you can take a ferry from Makarska to visit the very beautiful Brač or Hvar.
Travel further afield and there’s lots more to explore. Perhaps you could visit the gorgeous Krka National Park or the nearby city of Šibenik, where an annual International Children’s Festival takes place each summer. Some tours will take you to both Krka and this impressive city in one day – a great combination.
Alternatively, within around an hour, you can reach Split. A city that pulls out all the stops for families, it’s packed with fun attractions. Marjan Hill, to the west of the city centre, is great for a bracing walk and offers lovely views out to sea. You can take a bus to the sandy Znjan Beach which is made for fun, complete with bouncy castles, trampolines, paddle boats and arcades. You will also find a large aquarium and a semi-submarine which will both show off the area’s marine life.
Along the coast between Split and Makarska, you also have Omiš for pirate adventures and exciting water sports, and the beautiful Brela Beach.
