The Region
The Dubrovnik Riviera is an enchanting stretch of shoreline that entices travellers with its captivating beauty and rich history. This alluring destination, situated along the southern coast of Croatia, is a splendid amalgamation of picturesque landscapes, cultural treasures, and pristine beaches. The Dubrovnik Riviera offers a beach and a city break in one, with its stretch of Adriatic coastline and scattering of beautiful islands situated alongside the medieval city of Dubrovnik.
From the moment you set foot on this mesmerising coastline, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding islands. The crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic glisten under the Mediterranean sun, inviting you to take a dip and experience its azure depths.
One of the most famous and iconic destinations within the Dubrovnik Riviera is the city of Dubrovnik itself. Often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," Dubrovnik is a living testament to the region's rich history and cultural heritage. The city is a harmonious blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, which provides a fascinating journey through time as you walk along its cobbled streets. You can explore the well-preserved medieval city walls, which offer panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea, or wander through the historic Old Town, home to a myriad of churches, palaces, and museums, each holding stories from the past.
Just a short boat ride away from the city is the serene island of Lokrum. Lokrum’s lush botanical gardens and fragrant citrus groves, alongside the ruins of a Benedictine monastery, make it an idyllic spot for a day trip. Nature lovers will appreciate the peaceful tranquility of this island, as it's free of cars and offers a variety of walking trails and pristine swimming spots.
Thirty minutes from Dubrovnik is the picturesque resort of Cavtat. Embraced by a magnificent natural bay and a tree lined harbour, as you stroll through Cavtat, you'll be greeted by ancient houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea, and you can savour fresh seafood at the waterfront restaurants. The town’s historic centre boasts a wealth of cultural landmarks, and its authenticity and tranquil atmosphere are a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of larger tourist destinations.
The Konavle region, located just south of Dubrovnik, offers a plethora of walking and hiking trails. These trails meander through picturesque villages and vineyards, allowing you to witness the traditional way of life in this captivating region. Konavle is renowned for its winemaking heritage - so we recommend sampling some of the local wines along the way!
The Dubrovnik Riviera's culinary scene is as diverse as its landscapes. Traditional Dalmatian cuisine showcases a rich tapestry of flavours, blending Mediterranean and Adriatic influences. Fresh seafood is a cornerstone of local menus, prepared in a variety of ways to satisfy every palate. You'll find dishes like black risotto, grilled fish, and octopus salad, all seasoned with locally grown herbs and olive oil. For a truly authentic experience, pair your meal with a glass of Dingač, a local red wine produced from grapes grown on the nearby Pelješac Peninsula.
The Dubrovnik Riviera also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with beach bars and clubs that come to life after the sun sets. In addition to traditional music and dance, you can expect live performances and DJ sets that keep the party going well into the night. Banje Beach, located right next to the Old Town, is a popular spot for nighttime entertainment.
As you explore the Dubrovnik Riviera, you'll discover a region brimming with beauty and history. From the enchanting city of Dubrovnik to the charming towns along the coastline, this region offers a blend of cultural heritage, natural splendour, and delicious cuisine. It’s the perfect destinations for travellers seeking an authentic and captivating Mediterranean getaway.
