Newt Cottage is nestled on an exclusive resort with stunning grounds and views near Combe Martin in north Devon. Combe Martin is a fabulous seaside resort with stunning sandy coves, some of the UK’s best rock pools and a fantastic selection of cafes, unique shops, pubs, and restaurants. Combe Martin hosts many events celebrating its heritage and quirks including its annual Hunting of the Earl of Rone ceremony, a Pagan festival. The wonderful Southwest Coast Path runs through the village offering astonishing views and access to beaches and beauty spots that you may not otherwise see. You can hike to Great Hangman, the tallest sea cliff in Britain or take the two hundred and thirty steps down the Golden Cove. You can enjoy the calm waters of the bay on a boat, kayak, or stand-up paddle board.

There are spectacular beaches and coves nearby. Wild Pear Beach and Broadsands Beach are two of the most beautiful, secret coves. Wild Pear is reached via a dramatic descent from the coast path and is an idyllic, protected cove. Broadsands Beach was recently voted the ‘Happiest View in the UK’ with its special curved bay, turquoise sea, rock caves and trees. A network of tunnels hand-carved in the early nineteenth century lead to the wonderful Tunnels Beaches with their Victorian tidal swimming pool and sand and shingle private beaches. Barricane Beach boasts exotic shells, a delightful cafe, and glorious sunsets. Lee Bay is a fabulously secluded spot looking out to the Bristol Channel. It is often called ‘Fuchsia Valley’ due to its bright red flowers. Woolacombe Beach is a three-mile-long sandy wonder that has been voted the ‘Best Beach in Britain’ and it is only twenty minutes from the resort. Putsborough Sands are on the south side of Woolacombe offering glorious surf and views of the headland. Just around the Baggy Point headland is the very pretty village of Croyde with its famous surfing beach. Backing the fabulous Saunton Sands is the impressive Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The pretty, historic fishing village of Clovelly is worth the short drive. It was once owned by the Queen of England and clings to the four-hundred-foot cliff where there is no traffic. Steep cobbled streets tumble down to its ancient fishing harbour and 14th century quay.

Twelve miles away, the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is an excellent way to enjoy the wonderful coastal views between the two villages. Another popular trip is to Lundy Island which lies ten nautical miles off the coast. The ferry leaves from Ilfracombe Harbour taking you to this delightful island with its wildlife, big skies and gorgeous scenery.

The National Trust’s Arlington Court and Carriage Museum is a great day out with formal Victorian gardens, ponds, deer, plenty of space for picnics and an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles. It is a gem on the edge of Exmoor that has been in the Chichester family for over five hundred years. The gardens enjoy herbaceous borders, a fountain, walled kitchen garden and a conservatory brimming with exotic plants from around the world. There are pleasure grounds with gorgeous views, a wilderness pond, and a deer park wood. The old kitchen tearoom is lovely and offers tasty treats. There is also an excellent second-hand bookshop. Watersmeet is a dramatic river gorge and ancient woodland with a National Trust tearoom set in stunning surroundings. You can treat yourselves to delicious Devon cream teas and be captivated by the amazing landscapes and woodland trails.

You can learn many water sports in the area. Coasteering is also a thrilling sport with many experienced Coasteering and Adventure Sports companies operating at Watermouth Harbour, the next bay along from Combe Martin. Brave participants enjoy climbing over dramatic rocks, jumping into the sea, swimming through gullies, and exploring caves. Horse riding on Exmoor is also popular with the Dean Riding Stables.

  • Genuinely the best holiday

    on 27/06/2023

I don’t think I can say one negative thing about the property, it was the perfect place to stay for us and our boys (4yo and nearly 2yo).

The cottage was fantastic, so spacious and comfortable. The owners definitely know what families need to make a holiday easy and kitted the place out with high chairs, stair gates, child toilet seats and steps, games, books, bed guards and more.

The actual surroundings were exceptional. Fab outdoor play area and the indoor swimming was so good! Easy booking system and the kids loved it. The farm is gorgeous and the animals were a real treat for the kids too.

You’re given so much info to help you with your stay before you even arrive which is massively helpful. The local area has loads going on and particular favs were the Tunnel Beaches in Ilfracombe as well as sea safari there too. We also made a special day trip to Padstow in Cornwall - takes a couple of hours but worth it for Trevone Bay alone.

My only gripe would be I wish we stayed longer than 7 nights but we’ll just have to keep coming back!

  • A wonderful break in North Devon

    on 23/05/2023

We had a great time at Newt Cottage. The cottage itself was beautifully presented and the grounds around the cottage were wonderful. From feeding the animals to playing in the play room or swimming in the pool everything was on our doorstep and meant we could take each day as it came. Alice is a fantastic host who is always available for a chat or to give advice on where to go. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was really well thought out.
Thank you for helping to make our holiday so much fun. We're already looking at dates to return!

  • Another fantastic stay

    on 03/04/2023

We returned 3 years after our original stay and its even better under new ownership. Alice and the team there are brilliant. The farm is stunning and has everything you could need for a perfect family stay. Highly recomend.

  • A lovely week in a lovely place, with plenty to do on-site and nearby for us and the kids

    on 03/04/2023

We had a fantastic time. Alice and her family made us very welcome. The cottage is high spec, clean, and there are lots of little touches that made it special. Our kids loved all the things to do onsite, with pool, hot tub, and animals then genuinely didn't want to leave and we had to drag them out to Croyde, Lynton etc. All in all a fantastic break. We'll be back!

  • Great holiday

We had an excellent time. We went with our two boys age 2 and 4 the facilities were perfect for them. The cottage was lovely and clean. We had a great time and will look forward to returning again.

  • Fantastic holiday location for a young family

    on 28/08/2022

We spent a week here with 2 kids (age 2 & 4) and left feeling that we could have stayed for longer. There is so much to do on site as well as fantastic days out at local beaches. Our kids loved the pool, the indoor soft play and going to feed the farm animals in the morning. Everything at the farm was excellent, we were really well looked after. Lovely place and would definitely recommend it!

  • It was ideal

    on 20/06/2022

We booked all three smaller cottages for a family holiday and it was ideal.
The owner, Alice, could not have been more helpful and the facilities and whole environment were perfect for the whole family and especially our grandchildren .
Well located for the North Devon coast the mini estate was in a lovely quiet valley and very well set up and run…….we will certainly recommend and come again.

  • A wonderful stay!

    on 22/03/2022

A wonderful stay for our family. Our two daughters (2 and 3 years old) absolutely loved seeing the animals everyday and the range of outside play equipment to enjoy. Having the soft play in with the table tennis table also meant my husband and I could enjoy playing our game while the girls were entertained. The cottage was homely and the views stunning. We hope to return again! Thank you!

  • A perfect place for children (and adults!)

    on 25/09/2021

We have just come back from a fantastic week staying in Newt Cottage. We have a two year old and a 4 month old and it was the perfect place to be able to keep our eldest entertained when we couldn’t go out because of our youngest at certain points in the week. If you asked our two year old what the best part of our holiday was she would say the animals, trampoline, swimming pool, play park and indoor play centre - not a mention of anywhere else we visited! :-)
The house was comfortable and had everything we could possibly need. Most importantly the beds were comfy! The honesty shop was a nice touch and we made use of it on a couple of occasions.
Alice was quick to respond to any of my enquiries and really helpful with info for our holiday. Thanks to Roy for the animal feeding - we went every day it was on and it was a highlight of the holiday. We would love to come back and stay in one of the larger properties with our family or friends and will recommend to others.

  • Wonderful family stay in a stunning setting

    on 07/09/2021

Just back from a wonderful week at the resort and what a fantastic place this is. We stayed in Newt Cottage and it was really homely with everything a family (2 adults, 2 young children and a dog) needs. The facilities are fantastic, with an indoor pool, hot tubs, farm animals and the most wonderful scenery. Alice and her family couldn’t do enough for us and were very welcoming. Can’t wait to book the very impressive larger accommodations (Main house and converted barn) and bring our family and friends along next time too. The property is a wonderful location base for day tripping and we filled our week with days out after some great suggestions from Alice via their website. Highly recommended.

  • We’ll be coming back!

    on 24/07/2021

Is the perfect place for families with young kids. The owners have put a lot of love to the place. Lots of activities and close to some of the most beautiful beaches.

  • Comfortable and well equipped

    on 28/06/2021

The location was secluded and attractive, the cottage itself was comfortable and well equipped, the facilities, especially the swimming pool and play area, were excellent and everyone on site was very friendly and helpful. Overall we had a wonderful and relaxing holiday.

  • Perfect stay

    on 04/05/2021

Newt Cottage was perfect for our family of 4. It was clean, comfortable, and the kitchen was well-equipped. We were able to enjoy a movie night on Saturday as the cottage has access to Netflix.

The facilities onsite are incredible: we were able to book the pool twice a day (booking required due to Covid-restrictions) and had it for ourselves; the kids loved the outside playground; and feeding the animals was an experience that we all enjoyed (especially bottle-feeding the baby lambs).

The cottages are located near beautiful beaches (Wollacombe for example); equestrian centres and the Willdlife park.

Alice and her family were wonderful hosts. They genuinely wanted us to have a great time. It was our first time in Devon but won't be our last.

  • Fantastic stay

    on 01/05/2021

We had a brilliant stay at the property, a stunning location and a very comfortable stay with all needs met especially for our 8 months old.

  • The cottage and facilities are perfect for families with kids

    on 25/10/2020

Having stayed at Newt Cottage before a couple of years ago we knew what to expect and we weren’t disappointed. Everything about the cottage and facilities are perfect for families with kids, especially the outdoor play areas and the swimming pool which our kids loved. The cottage feels like like home from the moment we opened the door and provides a perfect base from which to explore the surrounding areas.
