Holdstone Cottage is nestled on an exclusive resort near Combe Martin in north Devon. Combe Martin is a fabulous seaside resort with stunning sandy coves, some of the UK’s best rock pools and a fantastic selection of cafes, unique shops, pubs, and restaurants. The fish and chips are delicious! Combe Martin hosts many events celebrating its heritage and quirks including its annual Hunting of the Earl of Rone ceremony, a Pagan festival. The wonderful Southwest Coast Path runs through the village offering astonishing views and access to beaches and beauty spots that you may not otherwise see. You can hike to Great Hangman, the tallest sea cliff in Britain or take the two hundred and thirty steps down the Golden Cove. You can enjoy the calm waters of the bay on a boat, kayak, or stand-up paddle board.

The beaches in this wonderful area are quite extraordinary. Wild Pear Beach and Broadsands Beach are two of the most beautiful, secret coves. Wild Pear is reached via a dramatic descent from the coast path and is an idyllic, protected cove. Broadsands Beach was recently voted the ‘Happiest View in the UK’ with its special curved bay, turquoise sea, rock caves and trees. A network of tunnels hand-carved in the early nineteenth century lead to the wonderful Tunnels Beaches with their Victorian tidal swimming pool and sand and shingle private beaches. Barricane Beach boasts exotic shells, a delightful cafe, and glorious sunsets. Lee Bay is a fabulously secluded spot looking out to the Bristol Channel. It is often called ‘Fuchsia Valley’ due to its bright red flowers. Woolacombe Beach is a three-mile-long sandy wonder that has been voted the ‘Best Beach in Britain’ and it is only twenty minutes from the resort. Putsborough Sands are on the south side of Woolacombe offering glorious surf and views of the headland. Just around the Baggy Point headland is the very pretty village of Croyde with its famous surfing beach. Backing the fabulous Saunton Sands is the impressive Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The pretty, historic fishing village of Clovelly is worth a stop. It was once owned by the Queen of England and clings to the four-hundred-foot cliff where there is no traffic. Steep cobbled streets tumble down to its ancient fishing harbour and 14th century quay.

The National Trust’s Arlington Court and Carriage Museum is a great day out with formal Victorian gardens, ponds, deer, plenty of space for picnics and an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles. It is a gem on the edge of Exmoor that has been in the Chichester family for over five hundred years. The gardens enjoy herbaceous borders, a fountain, walled kitchen garden and a conservatory brimming with exotic plants from around the world. There are pleasure grounds with gorgeous views, a wilderness pond and a deer park wood. The old kitchen tearoom is lovely and offers tasty treats. There is also an excellent second-hand bookshop. Watersmeet is a dramatic river gorge and ancient woodland with a National Trust tearoom set in stunning surroundings. You can treat yourselves to delicious Devon cream teas and be captivated by the amazing landscapes and woodland trails.

Twelve miles away, the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is an excellent way to enjoy the wonderful coastal views between the two villages. Another popular trip is to Lundy Island which lies ten nautical miles off the coast. The ferry leaves from Ilfracombe Harbour taking you to this delightful island with its wildlife, big skies, and gorgeous scenery.

Coasteering is a popular thrilling sport with many experienced Coasteering and Adventure Sports companies operating at Watermouth Harbour, the next bay along from Combe Martin. Brave participants enjoy climbing over dramatic rocks, jumping into the sea, swimming through gullies, and exploring caves. Horse riding on Exmoor is also popular with the Dean Riding Stables.

  • Fab welcome, fab property!

    on 28/10/2023

Fab welcome, fab property, happy child and content parents :-)

  • The whole place was great

    on 02/10/2023

We booked this as a last minute and luckily someone had cancelled. The whole place was great. Our cottage wanted fir nothing, it was in great condition and very clean. We were greated by Owner Alice who took the time to show us around, heated indoor pool was a good bonus. Also had outdoor play park including wendy out and football pitch. We will definitely be returning and would highly recommend this place to anyone, very quiet in a valley but only 5 min drive to Combe Martin.

  • Early September trip

    on 26/09/2023

We had a great time. It was the perfect place to truly relax with our two year old son.
We spent so much time in the grounds and on the property. So much to do for our little one, feeding the animals, playing in the play areas and our favourite thing to do was swim in the pool everyday.

Our cottage was perfect for the three of us and a short drive from the beach. Such a peaceful and beautiful setting. Alice was very helpful and friendly.

    Thanks so much.

  • Fantastic weekend break for the family

    on 10/06/2023

In need of a last minute weekend away, we were lucky enough to find availability at Holdstone Cottage… and what a fantastic weekend it was.

Visiting with our 6 year old daughter, we were looking for somewhere with enough space for the 3 of us, a good location for day trips and some facilities for children - Holdstone Cottage had it all, and more!

We had a very friendly welcome from Alice and were made to feel at home.

The cottage was very comfortable with lovely decor (I particularly liked the main bedroom) and very well equipped, including with books and games which delighted my daughter as well as a kitchen with everything you could need. The inclusion of slippers and bathrobes made the stay feel more homely than I would usually expect in a cottage stay.

Across the estate, the facilities were also impressive from the indoor pool with plenty of pool toys, the games room and soft play, kitchen garden and children’s play areas - all very well maintained. The highlight of the stay for our daughter were the animals - she was so excited to visit them and take them treats… particularly the very friendly pigs.

I look forward to returning for another stay.

  • Perfect for our little family

    on 04/07/2022

Our stay exceeded expectations and we felt so lucky to be able to stay on a small site that had so many appealing facilities plus things for young children to do. Delighted, thank you so much!

  • Wonderful stay

    on 18/04/2022

Lovely cottage in idyllic countryside. The site is beautiful, great kids play area with trampoline and pool. Conveniently located for lots of family days out. Alice is super helpful. We’ll definitely be back!

  • Relaxing week away

    on 18/04/2022

We have been coming to the property for a number of years and it never fails to disappoint. A wonderful, place to relax and recharge whatever the weather's doing.

  • Highly Recommend!

    on 07/04/2022

If you’re looking for somewhere that you can relax, entertain small children and take the dog in a great location this is the place.

Brilliant play area and swimming pool, also great to be able to feed the animals.

The views and scenery are breathtaking and the surrounding beaches are easy to get to.

The cottage was spotless and had everything you could possibly need, Alice was so accommodating and couldn’t do enough for us, we will most definitely be back.

Thank you for a wonderful break!

  • You won't want to leave!

We enjoyed a perfectly lovely week in the Holdstone Cottage. Very well appointed kitchen with all the utensils you could need for a week away. Gorgeous little garden, even if it's a bit steep to climb to, the views are wonderful! Clean and tidy. Enjoyed the pool, booking exclusively for your family, so felt very safe. Plenty of facilities to cater for all ages and picturesque views from the valley. Of course you have all the wonderful areas to visit that North Devon has to offer, we discovered the Hunter's Inn at Heddon's Valley, stunning walk from Woody Bay this time. Can't wait to come back. Thanks to Alice for a wonderful and relaxing holiday!

  • Perfect family holiday location

    on 10/07/2021

We had a wonderful time at peacock cottage, the facilities were great, cottage was clean and comfortable and the location was excellent for access to Woolacome/ilfracombe beach just a short drive to both. Thanks for a lovely stay.

  • A blissful break in gorgeous surroundings

    on 05/06/2021

This was a repeat stay, and we booked for next year before we left, that probably says everything.

It just keeps better. The cottages and grounds are amazing, and paradise for children. You can visit the animals whenever or take part in feeding at set times.

It's a little out of the way, in terms of walking to places, but a 5 min drive to the nearest cove (a lovely family safe beach) and Ilfracombe and Woolacombe are close too. Lots of other attractions in North Devon are very reachable if you want to leave the site but you could stay there the whole time and never be bored (we have to pull my children away from the playground!)

The collaborations (massage therapist, art, ice cream van etc) are well thought out and means you can add to your holiday easily.

Special mention to the pool which is well heated and a great size. There is something very special and we can't wait to return.

Holdstone Cottage is great and well suited to a family of four. The child equipment is always well thought out (eg. Toilet seat, step, highchair, bed guard) and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to prepare meals. It's a nice touch to provide cleaning equipment, dishwasher tablets, washing tablets etc. There is a good honesty shop too so you're never stuck.

If there is ever a problem or query the team respond promptly.

    Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

  • Hope to return in the future.

We had a fabulous few days. The cottage was very comfortable and quiet in wonderful surroundings. Alice made us very welcome and we enjoyed feeding the animals with Roy. We hope to return in the future.

  • Lovely with everything and more you could need

    on 17/05/2021

We booked a last minute getaway and stayed in Holdstone Cottage. The cottage was lovely with everything and more you could need. We were also able to bring the dog which was great, lovely touch with the dog treats and dog tag.
Alice was so helpful and accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. My girls absolutely loved feeding the animals and having plenty of cuddles with the bunnies. The nearest beach was only 5 minutes in the car. The swimming pool was amazing, the booking system worked so well. We will be returning as soon as we can! Absolutely loved it.

  • Excellent

Beautiful cottage, great location, super friendly.
The cottage was excellent, with everything you could need. Great terrace for evening bbq and a lovely location to sit and relax. The pool was awesome, as were the animals.

Thank you for a truly fantastic week away.

  • Great for children

    on 11/11/2020

We loved the facilities and animals which kept the kids entertained and busy even when it was raining. The pool is lovely and warm, and Roy was very friendly when we fed the animals with him. Holdstone Cottage was compact but perfect for our family of 4 (4yo and 3yo).

  • Cosy cottage with good amenities

    on 25/10/2020

We had a lovely time. They have done all they can to adapt to CVID and keep facilities available. Play area, pool, grounds and animals all lovely and Andrew took a lot of time to personally show our girls feeding time which was appreciated. Booking system for swimming worked well. Lots of places to visit. Washing machine room appreciated.
Cottage was cosy - only downside no draw space which meant living out of suit cases. Appreciate we had the remaining 2 bedroom cottage and unsure how they would fit but would have been nice to put clothes away. Didn't detract from stay though and would return.

  • Fantastic family stay

    on 04/10/2020

What a great place to have a family break. The indoor swimming pool was really clean and perfect temperature for our 1 and 3 year olds. The outdoor play area was an excellent addition although our use of these was reduced by the rain. Use of the indoor play area was prevented due to Covid, but I feel that this could also be opened and utilise the same booking system used for the pool.
Ideal location for local beaches and attractions. Would recommend the dinosaur park for an excellent day out.
