Wilfred Manor is an expansive Grade I listed manor house, exceptionally restored to the finest standard of modern luxury, yet staying true to its long and prestigious history. King Charles I is in fact said to haunt the four acres of landscaped gardens, after he took refuge within the manor during the siege of Gloucester in 1643.

Each of the bedrooms have been given a unique theme that compliments the original 17th century architecture whilst offering spacious en-suits, exquisite furnishings. Each room offers a different perspective on the stunning landscape of the Cotswold Hills, including the woods above Slad Valley and the famous church spire of Painswick.

A sought after wedding venue, the manor house can sleep up to 22 guests with access to extensive facilities including a jacuzzi and sauna, whilst catered for by a team of passionate staff. The local area remains tranquil and picturesque, yet offers a wealth of traditional English country past times such as horse riding, shooting and hiking.

Owner Profile

The earliest recorded Lord of the Manor was Ernisi in 1050, when the village was then known as Wyke. Over many centuries local life was dominated by the Manor and its Lordship, and the Lord from 1121 – 1137, Pain FitzJohn, is thought to have given his name to the town, hence ‘Pain’s-wyke’.

The original Manor was demolished in 1445, but was re-established soon after and was fully functioning as a court until 1931. Minor and serious offences were punishable by methods such as the stocks and gallows! The original stocks can be seen outside the gates to The Manor.

King Charles I even stayed in Wilfred Manor as he battled through Painswick prior to the Siege of Gloucester in 1643, and used the court room to administer justice to wrongdoers.

  • Perfect Retreat in the Cotswolds

    Created on 22/08/2018

e were greeted warmly and poured a glass of cava (must appreciated surprise!) and shown to our room which was othello up on the top floor. The room was stunning with beautiful views of the garden and beyond. We had a huge deep bath and a fantastically comfortable bed so got a great nights sleep and woke up to the sound of only the birds singing! Absolute heaven!

Fabulous location being right next to the church. Secure gated grounds and a proper chocolate box manor house and grounds. Rooms are full of character and quirky. A few detail bits that needed attention and a few cleanliness issues if you really looked for them but didn't detract from the overall package. Staff were admittedly young and were having to multitask but we're very helpful, friendly and professional. Food was excellent in an allbeit slightly cramped restaurant. All told and considering the very reasonable prices we were very pleasantly surprised and would definitely stay again.

  • Nice weekend

    Created on 15/07/2018

Beautiful place. Room was HUGE! Bathroom HUGE and had everything. Bed was SO comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Easy to walk to anything. Parking was private. No A/C but fans in the room so was fine. Would stay again.

  • Beautiful house, friendly staff

    Created on 11/07/2018

Very nice comfy bed in Tempest, with beautiful views down into the garden. Quite a small but perfectly adequate bathroom/shower room; clean and everything worked but a little in the small side if this were for a couple on a romantic getaway.
The breakfast was good, parking ample and the staff were friendly.
    Overall, I’d definitely recommend.

  • A perfect Cotswold's break in the Manor we'd all want to own

    Created on 02/07/2018

This was our first visit to Painswick and the village is a joy. Beautiful scenery, picture postcard, historic and quintessentially English. In pride of place, behind the church (make a note you wedding planners), is the imposing Wilfred Manor.
The building has the wow factor and the grounds and public areas are all fantastic and in my opinion everything is tastefully done. The bedrooms maybe could do with sprucing up a little but this is an historic, part-timber, manor house so you need to expect quirky. Our room, Cleopatra, had all the facilities and comfort you'd expect at a price that can't be beaten.
The restaurant was closed but we knew that in advance and there are a couple of pubs and eateries in the village so that was no issue. We spent the night out and returned to the hotel bar where we quickly made friends with two other couples and we're entertained and looked after by the witty, charming and attentive Jarred who made special mention of the birthday I was there to celebrate. A great night was had and apologies to Jarred for keeping him serving and chatting way past his official home time.
So admittedly the bedrooms (based on our experience and other reviews) are a little tired but I'd argue that they are more charming than faded and, if like us you relish something a bit more interesting than a Travelodge, I'd urge you to visit this sumptuous country house and enjoy a perfect British Cotswold's weekend. We'll be back!

  • Thank you to all

Beautiful Manor House which has been thoughtfully furnished and decorated. Excellent location to visit some really pretty villages and within reach of Bath and Cheltenham. Painswick is one of the loveliest places we have visited.
The Staff were pleasant friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was furnished beautifully and had everything we needed.

  • A real treat!

    Created on 09/06/2018

What a great place to stay for a while to unwind, relax and enjoy a break . All of the staff were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent and the house, gardens and the view were wonderful.
The privacy and safety of the grounds was a bonus. No need to worry about parking the car on a roadside as this oasis has a huge sweeping driveway gained via electronically controlled gates.
We really enjoyed ourselves, wandering around the village, stopping off for a coffee here and there.
Next time we go there to stay, which we will , we will choose a larger room. We stayed in Julius Caesar which was very comfortable and well equipped but was in the eaves of the house and the stairs were a tad difficult to negotiate and the huge original beams in the room made navigating at night a bit difficult for people of our age.
I would recommend this place to anyone without hesitation.

  • Magical

Beautiful grounds in a fairytale setting. Had the pleasure of meetjng the owners Linda & Peter who were both a lot of fun and good for a bit of banter.
Very warm and hospitable. The staff were lovely. Breakfast was great as were touches like champagne on arrival and tea and cookies in the room. Would definitely reccomend to any of my friends or family looking for a luxurious escape in the Cotswolds!
