Resting peacefully on a stunning four acre estate in the heart of the Cotswolds, Wilfred Manor is an exceptional Grade I manor house, restored to the finest standard yet maintaining characterful nods to its incredible past. Located in Painswick, Gloucestershire, the home boasts stunning views of the Slad Valley and surrounding countryside. It is the perfect place for a memorable countryside break with total privacy, beauty, tranquility and wonderful access to entertainment including race days at Cheltenham, local gin tasting plus the delights of picturesque villages including Sheepscombe, Edge and Slad. The world famous Rococo Gardens and Gloucester Cathedral are also close by.

The history of Wilfred Manor is fascinating. The earliest recorded Lord of the Manor was Ernist in 1050 when Painswick was known as Wyke. Over centuries the Manor dominated local life and Pain FitzJohn, the Lord from 1121 to 1137, is thought to have given his name to the town, hence ‘Pain’s-wyke’. The original Manor was demolished in 1445 and rebuilt and was fully functioning as a court until 1831. The original stocks can be seen outside the gates. King Charles I stayed at the Manor prior to the Siege of Gloucester in 1743. Throughout this magnificent property, you will discover fabulous characterful rooms with enormous fireplaces, beams and vaulted ceilings, all nods to its intriguing past. Each of its sensational rooms offers stunning garden and landscape views, including the woods above Slad Valley and the famous church spire of Painswick.

Wilfred Manor is a sought after wedding venue with its excellent, extensive facilities and its amazing catering team. It is the perfect spot for multi-generational family gatherings, special celebrations and corporate events. The Manor offers many entertainment spaces, all of which offer luxurious furnishings and a fabulous atmosphere.  The Great Room is the original Court Room. It boasts a stunning, large open fire, original wood panelled walls, sumptuous furnishings, beautiful draped curtains and a 55 inch television with Sky channels and a DVD player. The beautiful library enjoys original flooring, an enormous open fire and a plentiful supply of books. Guests can relax and unwind with views over the gardens. It is the perfect place for a quiet read of the Sunday newspapers! The spacious family room boasts a large 55 inch TV with Sky channels, a DVD player and a Bose sound system. With original flooring and beams and a roaring open fire, this is a perfect place for a chilled movie night! The exquisite dining room can seat 16 guests comfortably and boasts beautiful views over the garden. The large, stylish kitchen is very well equipped with oversize appliances, perfect for the chefs in your group. It offers a beautiful breakfast table and views of the garden. The Manor also enjoys a striking ‘restaurant’ room which is used only when the catering team have been requested. In addition, guests have use of the excellent snooker and games room. It offers a professional full size snooker table, many board games, a television with Bose speakers and a bar with a fridge, ice machine, sink and bar stools.

Wilfred Manor can comfortably accommodate up to twenty-two guests. The extraordinary bedroom suites have all recently been modernised and the bathrooms refurbished. The bedrooms each have their own unique names and style but are all as equally luxurious, a dreamy nights sleep is guaranteed! The eleven bedrooms are set across the three different levels, all either feature double, king or super-king beds and boast their own private shower or bathroom facilities.

The outside space is as equally impressive, the private 10m pool is both heated and covered, making it ideal for all weathers. The whole group are bound to enjoy making a splash in there! There are four acres of ground to explore, with plenty of room for games and multiple terraces designed with al fresco dining in mind.

For those looking to really relax, private dining with the in-house chef can be arranged and can cater to you and your family or friends. Whether you are looking for a seated three course menu, or a relaxed sofa night, we can cater your stay to suit your tastes and budget. • Perfect Retreat in the Cotswolds

    Created on 22/08/2018

e were greeted warmly and poured a glass of cava (must appreciated surprise!) and shown to our room which was othello up on the top floor. The room was stunning with beautiful views of the garden and beyond. We had a huge deep bath and a fantastically comfortable bed so got a great nights sleep and woke up to the sound of only the birds singing! Absolute heaven!

Fabulous location being right next to the church. Secure gated grounds and a proper chocolate box manor house and grounds. Rooms are full of character and quirky. A few detail bits that needed attention and a few cleanliness issues if you really looked for them but didn't detract from the overall package. Staff were admittedly young and were having to multitask but we're very helpful, friendly and professional. Food was excellent in an allbeit slightly cramped restaurant. All told and considering the very reasonable prices we were very pleasantly surprised and would definitely stay again.

  • Nice weekend

    Created on 15/07/2018

Beautiful place. Room was HUGE! Bathroom HUGE and had everything. Bed was SO comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Easy to walk to anything. Parking was private. No A/C but fans in the room so was fine. Would stay again.

  • Beautiful house, friendly staff

    Created on 11/07/2018

Very nice comfy bed in Tempest, with beautiful views down into the garden. Quite a small but perfectly adequate bathroom/shower room; clean and everything worked but a little in the small side if this were for a couple on a romantic getaway.
The breakfast was good, parking ample and the staff were friendly.
    Overall, I’d definitely recommend.

  • A perfect Cotswold's break in the Manor we'd all want to own

    Created on 02/07/2018

This was our first visit to Painswick and the village is a joy. Beautiful scenery, picture postcard, historic and quintessentially English. In pride of place, behind the church (make a note you wedding planners), is the imposing Wilfred Manor.
The building has the wow factor and the grounds and public areas are all fantastic and in my opinion everything is tastefully done. The bedrooms maybe could do with sprucing up a little but this is an historic, part-timber, manor house so you need to expect quirky. Our room, Cleopatra, had all the facilities and comfort you'd expect at a price that can't be beaten.
The restaurant was closed but we knew that in advance and there are a couple of pubs and eateries in the village so that was no issue. We spent the night out and returned to the hotel bar where we quickly made friends with two other couples and we're entertained and looked after by the witty, charming and attentive Jarred who made special mention of the birthday I was there to celebrate. A great night was had and apologies to Jarred for keeping him serving and chatting way past his official home time.
So admittedly the bedrooms (based on our experience and other reviews) are a little tired but I'd argue that they are more charming than faded and, if like us you relish something a bit more interesting than a Travelodge, I'd urge you to visit this sumptuous country house and enjoy a perfect British Cotswold's weekend. We'll be back!

  • Thank you to all

    Created on 10/06/2018

Beautiful Manor House which has been thoughtfully furnished and decorated. Excellent location to visit some really pretty villages and within reach of Bath and Cheltenham. Painswick is one of the loveliest places we have visited.
The Staff were pleasant friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was furnished beautifully and had everything we needed.

  • A real treat!

    Created on 09/06/2018

What a great place to stay for a while to unwind, relax and enjoy a break . All of the staff were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent and the house, gardens and the view were wonderful.
The privacy and safety of the grounds was a bonus. No need to worry about parking the car on a roadside as this oasis has a huge sweeping driveway gained via electronically controlled gates.
We really enjoyed ourselves, wandering around the village, stopping off for a coffee here and there.
Next time we go there to stay, which we will , we will choose a larger room. We stayed in Julius Caesar which was very comfortable and well equipped but was in the eaves of the house and the stairs were a tad difficult to negotiate and the huge original beams in the room made navigating at night a bit difficult for people of our age.
I would recommend this place to anyone without hesitation.

  • Magical

    Created on 01/06/2018

Beautiful grounds in a fairytale setting. Had the pleasure of meetjng the owners Linda & Peter who were both a lot of fun and good for a bit of banter.
Very warm and hospitable. The staff were lovely. Breakfast was great as were touches like champagne on arrival and tea and cookies in the room. Would definitely reccomend to any of my friends or family looking for a luxurious escape in the Cotswolds!
