The Blue Flag Ancao Beach is roughly halfway between Faro and Quarteira, within the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ which is an area containing the Algarve’s most affluent resorts of Vale do Lobo, Vale do Garrao and Quinta do Lago. Ancoa is on the edge of the beautiful Ria Formosa Nature Park and is backed by pristine sand dunes. There are sun loungers and parasols available and a few dining options, including the excellent Dois Passos fish restaurant. There are watersports including water skiing, wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking available.
The Ria Formosa Nature Park is a large network of barrier islands and inlets created by constantly shifting sandbanks stretching to Cacelha Velha near Tavira. The reserve is an important breeding ground for many coastal birds and is an area of oyster and salt farming, fishing and shellfish harvesting. Charming ferry boats take visitors to the remote islands of Barreta, Culatra, Armona and Ilha Tavira from Faro, Olhao, Fuseta and Tavira. It is definitely worth a trip to Faro and beyond to discover these lovely islands.
Loule is a charming, typical Portuguese market town centred around its North African inspired covered market. The local produce, fresh fish and regional handicraft stalls are so colourful and atmospheric. There are extra markets on Saturdays, so that is a great day to visit.
If you are looking for some sophisticated nightlife, then you should head to Vilamoura. The modern marina is brimming with luxury yachts, chic restaurants and vibrant bars and cafes - amazing DJ’s play cool music in the trendy clubs. The Vilamoura Casino is very popular as are the glamorous brand-name boutiques. Vilamoura Beach extends to Quarteira, and the breathtaking Falesia Beach stretches for miles to Olhos de Aqua.
