The Blue Flag Ancao Beach is roughly halfway between Faro and Quarteira, within the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ which is an area containing the Algarve’s most affluent resorts of Vale do Lobo, Vale do Garrao and Quinta do Lago. Ancoa is on the edge of the beautiful Ria Formosa Nature Park and is backed by pristine sand dunes. There are sun loungers and parasols available and a few dining options, including the excellent Dois Passos fish restaurant. There are watersports including water skiing, wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking available.

The Ria Formosa Nature Park is a large network of barrier islands and inlets created by constantly shifting sandbanks stretching to Cacelha Velha near Tavira. The reserve is an important breeding ground for many coastal birds and is an area of oyster and salt farming, fishing and shellfish harvesting. Charming ferry boats take visitors to the remote islands of Barreta, Culatra, Armona and Ilha Tavira from Faro, Olhao, Fuseta and Tavira. It is definitely worth a trip to Faro and beyond to discover these lovely islands.

Loule is a charming, typical Portuguese market town centred around its North African inspired covered market. The local produce, fresh fish and regional handicraft stalls are so colourful and atmospheric. There are extra markets on Saturdays, so that is a great day to visit.

If you are looking for some sophisticated nightlife, then you should head to Vilamoura. The modern marina is brimming with luxury yachts, chic restaurants and vibrant bars and cafes - amazing DJ’s play cool music in the trendy clubs. The Vilamoura Casino is very popular as are the glamorous brand-name boutiques. Vilamoura Beach extends to Quarteira, and the breathtaking Falesia Beach stretches for miles to Olhos de Aqua.

Casa Lania is perfect for a family holiday. There is so much to entertain children in this region of the Algarve. The beaches are absolutely fabulous, including the local Ancao Beach. Vilamoura’s Falesia beach is wonderful and huge. Children can play football or volleyball without anyone being disturbed, and there are many watersports and inflatable rides to be enjoyed. Children also love taking the little wooden ferry boats over to the islands on the Ria Formosa Nature Park. There are many boat trips available, including high-speed RIB boat to watch dolphins. There are also trips to explore the coastline’s mysterious and fascinating caves. If you find the sea a little chilly, you can visit the calm, saltwater lake in the Quinta do Lago resort. Artur’s Watersports Academy is located there and offers excellent family-friendly facilities including seasonal children's programmes, surf camps, kids clubs, sailing lessons, pedalos, kayaks and a challenging water obstacle course.

Aquashow Park at Quarteira is a fantastic water park for thrill-seeking children. Its wave pool, lazy river, flumes, slides and fairground rides are amazing. The watercoaster ride is one of the most popular rides. There are also some delightful animal shows with birds of prey and snakes.

Almancil Go Karting is a popular attraction where experienced karters can take to the speedy 390cc karts and over 13’s can ride the 200cc karts. There are junior karts available for younger children and two-seater karts for parents wanting to take young children for a ride.

The charming town of Tavira is well worth the trip. The narrow streets and cosy cafes are fantastic. You can reach the beach on the island of Tavira by taking a ferry across the River Gilao and the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve to reach the island. If you want to go to the pretty Praia do Barril you can either walk the last kilometre of the track or take a train ride.
