Situated 700 meters above sea level, Agios Georgios Nileias is known for being one of the most beautiful villages of the Pelion region, from its quaint stone buildings with their red-tiled roofs to the chestnut trees and olive groves, pear and apple trees, and fragrant gardens. Not far from Athens, and just a short distance from Volos in Magnesia, the village is in the perfect spot for exploring the wider region, including the neighbouring village of Pinakates; relatively untouched by man and a category 1 protected landmark, this secret place was until recently only accessible by one road. The village is quiet and tranquil with a small square in the centre, sheltered under a big plane tree and featuring a small bakery selling fresh bread and pastries, a mini-market, and a seasonal taverna. Visitors to the village will marvel at the beautiful architecture of the boutique bed and breakfast guest houses, and the church of Agios Dimitrios. Due to the location a car is essential.
The region of Thessaly is known as the land of the mythical Centaurs as well as being the birthplace of Achilles; hero of the Trojan war, Asclepius; the father of medicine, and the area where the battle between the Titans and Olympian gods took place.
