A well-known architect created the cubist design of this sleek Californian-style house situated on a hillside just outside Carqueiranne. Nearly every room and outside space celebrates the spectacular views of the azure Mediterranean beyond and there is a secret upstairs spot in the house where you may well feel you are actually at sea! Villa Ophelie is about a twenty minute walk downhill to a lovely beach in a small cove well protected from the wind.
The kitchen-diner opens out to an al-fresco dining terrace while the living room has an enormous angled bay window to maximise the sea views - a giant TV screen transforms this space into a cinema at night. The occupants of each of the five en-suite bedrooms will just want to lie back and gaze at the changing colours of the sea and sky as dawn breaks or as the stars appear at night.
The interior of the house is fully air conditioned but outdoors is definitely a spot for sun lovers. When you need to cool off, the elegant infinity pool and tempting hot tub are both set on the expansive wooden terrace with vast views over the sea and surrounding hills. Refreshed, try out the boules court before making a pizza in the summer kitchen.
Carqueiranne has a range of beaches and sunny coves for swimming and summer watersports including snorkelling, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and sailing. The little town has shops, restaurants, cafés and pretty parks and gardens in which to pleasantly while away the time.
This is the perfect location for visiting historic Hyères, the maritime city of Toulon and even glitzy Saint-Tropez, not forgetting some of the picturesque towns and villages along the coast and inland. From the southern end of the Giens peninsula, take a ferry to the glorious Îles d’Hyères or book a vineyard tour and discover why the region is so famous for its wine.
The whole area is a paradise for lovers of outdoor activities with golf, tennis and mountain biking available as well as the huge range of watersports. There are plenty of hiking opportunities in the glorious landscapes of the Massif de Colle Noir, Paradis Mountains, Saint-Baume National Park and the Janas Forest.

What you should know
In a raised position, guests need to be able to manage stairs up to the villa and children will need supervising across its terraced grounds and open-sided steps.
It’s around a 20-minute stroll down to a small bay and summer beachside restaurant, as long as you don’t mind the walk back up the hill.

Villa Ophelie is situated on a wooded hillside just outside the Provençal harbour town of Carqueiranne in the Var department of south-eastern France, between the towns of Toulon and Hyères. It takes about twenty minutes to walk 1.5km downhill to the nearest beach in a small cove, well protected from the wind.
Carqueiranne is a well-known seaside resort with fine beaches and sunny coves for swimming with a range of watersports including snorkelling, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and sailing. It has a microclimate which enables the region’s flower growing and perfume production. The small town has shops, restaurants, cafés as well as pretty parks and gardens in which to pleasantly while away the time. St Madeleine Church is well worth a visit and the military fort of Bayarde built on the Massif de Colle Noir is another remarkable building.
From the southern end of the Giens peninsula, around 15km away, catch a water taxi or ferry to the beautiful Îles d’Hyères. The island of Porquerolles is car free so you can hire a bike at the port and cycle through landscapes of vineyards, pine forests and eucalyptus trees, stopping along the way for a swim at one of the island’s many idyllic beaches.
Back to the mainland, the whole area is a paradise for outdoor activities with golf, tennis and mountain biking as well as many longer cycle routes. There are hiking opportunities in the fantastic landscapes of the Massif de Colle Noir, Paradis Mountains, Saint-Baume National Park and the Janas Forest.
A 20-minute north-easterly drive takes you to the medieval town of Hyères, known as “the palm tree town” which has lost none of its historical charm. It has some wonderful parks and gardens and the nearby archaeological site of Olbia, near the top of the Giens peninsula, is a fascinating place to visit.
In the other direction, the maritime city of Toulon (15km) is famous for its naval construction, fishing and winemaking. Spend the morning strolling round the harbour and visiting its vibrant market before choosing a tour in one of the nearby vineyards - you will soon discover why this region is so renowned for its wine.
Beyond Toulon are some other lovely French Riviera seaside towns such as Seyne-sur-Mer known for its elegant villas, Les Sablettes with colourful beachside markets, characterful Sanary-sur-Mer and the popular small seaside resort of Bandol.
For an exciting day trip, you might want to drive the 60km eastwards through the forest to the glitzy town of Saint-Tropez with its expensive harbour yachts and trendy beach clubs on Pampelonne Beach.
The Region
The Provençal way of life is one that’s deeply tempting for anyone who’s been feeling the need to get away from it all.
