Overview of Chateau De Lauzel

What Oliver loves…

  • You won't find a chateau in a more spectacular location anywhere in France!
  • The local wine tasting is absolutely fantastic - we recommend going to see Patrick in Les Eyzies for a beautiful (and amazing value) tipple.
  • The outdoor dining terrace overlooks the Beune Valley and Commarque Chateau and is an unbelievable place to enjoy cocktails, canapes and a summer barbecue.
  • This chateau is great for those who appreciate history, as there's ample opportunity for daytripping and enjoying everything the culturally rich surroundings have to offer.
  • Les Eyzies (which is only minutes away) is truly beautiful, with incredible views and world class dining. The popular medieval destination of Sarlat is within striking distance too.

What you should know…

  • All staircases bar one are spiralled so best left to the nimble footed - the chateau is not suitable for the elderly or children under 7 years old
  • Will the caretaker has two very well-behaved and friendly dogs at the property.
  • The en-suite bathrooms are basic, but it's more than made up for by the main bathroom that comes complete with a Jacuzzi.

Chateau de Lauzel is a six bedroom chateau that sleeps ten guests, found in 24 hectares of arcadian rural woodland that makes up part of the forested valley that extends on its southern boundary to the middle of the Beune River.

In the cliff face to the east of the Chateau is a huge, troglodyte Pigeonnier (a sort of dovecote) which is currently gated and inaccessible. Further up the valley is the location of the Venus de Laussel, a limestone carving of a woman that dates back some 25,000 years. It's a great place to visit and, as you'd expect, is classified as an artefact of no little historical significance! On the western boundary of the site is the Abri du Cap Blanc, which contains notable Magdalenian friezes and is open to the public.

As the site is set on a hillside which terminates in a steep vertical drop into the valley, the stunning terraces and gardens occur on a series of delightful levels. Outside the wall of the Chateau's courtyard there is a large,  formal parterre garden with shady seating areas for relaxing and truly appreciating the delicious local wines!

At a lower level and adjacent to the C17th chapel, is the 11x11m D-shaped swimming pool, which is protected by an audible security system.

Double bedroom with ensuite. The double bed is made up of two single beds which can be pulled apart slightly if preferred.

Third Floor Square Tower
Double bedroom: The double bed is made up of two single beds. There are fixed bedside tables either side, but one bed could be pulled forward of a table, and positioned against the wall if you'd prefer the room to have two singles.

Fourth Floor Square Tower
Double bedroom - The double bed is made up of two single beds. As with the third floor square tower bedroom, there are fixed bedside tables either side but one bed could be pulled forward of a table if you require single beds.

Interior Description
The ground floor of Chateau de Lauzel has a large vaulted entrance hall connected to the main circular staircase, utility room and cellar. The Hall opens onto a large south-facing terrace overlooking the valley and the historic Chateau Commarque.

The Salon is at first floor level along with the dining room, the galleries and the fully equipped kitchen which includes dishwasher, microwave, electric ovens, gas and electric hob.

On the second floor are two large double bedrooms, each with a shower room (see below) containing a hand basin and WC. All the shower rooms are similarly equipped with walls and floors finished in white mosaic tiling.

On the third floor there is an Octagonal Room containing a 2m Jacuzzi, shower, hand basin, bidet and WC.

In the Small Tower there are two single bedrooms, one on the ground floor and one on the first, each with a wet room containing a hand basin, shower and loo.

In the square keep on both the third and fourth levels you'll find two further double bedrooms. These bedrooms are not equipped with en suite bathrooms but are both within easy reach of the Jacuzzi Room.

The six bedrooms can sleep up to a total of 10 persons in comfort. Access to all upper levels is by circular stone staircases which are not suitable for young children or elderly. Wireless internet available for guest use.

Please be aware that due to the challenges posed by renovating a genuine 13th century medieval castle, the ensuite bathrooms mentioned above are relatively small and do not have a full shower - they do, however, have a removable tap/hose combo on the sinks that can be used as a very basic shower, thanks to these rooms being fully tiled and waterproofed. This small drawback is somewhat mitigated by the beautiful master bathroom that comes complete with a big Jacuzzi!

The chateau is a well loved family home; the owners respectfully ask that you care for it as if it were your own.

The Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Chateau De Lauzel Reviews

  • Lauzel

Posted by Keith C on 27/09/2013

The property is in a great location in the Dordogne. Lots to see and do within the immediate area.

The setting of the castle is spectacular -- a beautiful small valley with a magnificent ruin across the way.

The castle is in excellent condition. It has a modern kitchen, with modern plumbing and electrical systems throughout. Wifi is very good.

Everyone in our group enjoyed staying in the castle, but the circular stair cases are quite steep in places.

Overall, this is an excellent property and very, very unusual.
