Villa Fethi Bey is on the outskirts of the mountain village Ovacik in southwestern Turkey. It’s in a peaceful, rural spot with a backdrop of the Babadag Mountain and a view down the valley to the popular resort village Ölüdeniz. There are local shops within easy reach along with a few bars and restaurants. With plenty of things to see and do, it’s perfect for families and couples alike.

Hisaronu bustling centre is within a 15-minute walk, here there are larger supermarkets and a variety of bars and restaurants. There’s also an open-air market on Mondays where you can pick up fresh local food and handmade goods. The vibrant and lively port city of Fethiye is just 10 minutes by car, and there you’ll find a shopping centre, alongside more shops, restaurants and cultural sites. Fethiye has a larger market on Tuesdays.

Fethiye is best known for its natural harbour, blue waters and numerous rock tombs including the 4th-century B.C. Tomb of Amyntas, carved into a rock face and overlooking the city. For foodies, there’s a fish market and other markets that sell everything from rugs to produce. You can sample delicious gözleme (thin dough crepes), chose from the Turkish fayre at the Megri Lokanta and then visit one of the Turkish Baths for a relaxing treat.

Near-shore islands from Fethiye are popular for day trips by boat. In the south, the turquoise lagoon at Ölüdeniz is a prime swimming and water sports spot due to its crystal-clear and calm waters. You can also get there by car or Dolmus (the local bus service). Heading along the coast past Olu Deniz is Butterfly Valley (about 24km from Fethiye) – a serene nature reserve that’s home to diverse butterfly species . Inland is Kaya Valley, the setting for Louis de Berniere's novel, Birds without Wings', a village where you can explore the ruined buildings left from the population exchange in 1924.

Fethiye

Situated on the ancient city of Telmessos, Fethiye is named after one of its most famous ‘sons’, the aviator Fethi Bey. An earthquake in 1957 damaged central Fethiye, so many of its buildings have been built since then. You can, however, see a Lycian theatre, Lycian tombs (including the rock tomb of Amyntas) and visit the Fethiye museum for more history and artefacts. The centre of Fethiye boasts a covered market area, half of which is given over to the local fish market where you can choose your catch from one of the centre stalls and then get it cooked in any of the surrounding restaurants. The whole of the area is shadowed by the mountain of Babadag where paragliders take to the skies, landing on the beach at Olu Deniz.

Fethiye’s Tuesday market is worth a visit. Traders come from the outlying villages to sell the wares from their smallholdings. Furrowed browed men with cloth caps, and ladies in floral bloomers will sell their produce amongst the lads trying to get you to buy their designer fakes! It’s all in good humour. Try a little bartering and see if you can do some good business. Go to the spice stall and you will get some amazing spices. Look for the Kar Serbeti, like a cinnamon slush or Ayran, a salty yoghurt drink both guaranteed to cool you down.

Olu Deniz & Calis are where people tend to flock for a beach but there are now a few private beach clubs along the coast between Olu Deniz and Fethiye which are worth a visit. There are also beach clubs situated around the lagoon, all with sunbeds, restaurants and drinks service. Hisaronu is more commercialised and hosts a large selection of bars, restaurants and gift shops.

Kids

The villa has a private swimming pool, which is surrounded by a wall, meaning it's great for younger children to play. There are Grecian steps to make access easier for little ones. With a fantastic selection of water sports in the area including renowned scuba and snorkelling opportunities, and top cultural sites and walking routes, the Fethiye region also offers plenty of opportunities to keep kids occupied and happy.

There’s a lovely family-friendly beach at Ölüdeniz lagoon with calm waters – ideal for young swimmers – and water sports opportunities, such as paddle boats and kayaking. The famed beach is also a protected national park (Ölüdeniz Tabiat Parkı), so you can look out for the local wildlife, and there are also a couple of waterparks in the area for a fun day out too.

Fethiye specialises in historic sites with a range of interesting ruins nearby that promise a great day out for the kids. There’s Tlos, an ancient ruined Lycian hilltop or you can take a boat trip to Gemiler Island with remains of several 4th-century churches. There’s also Butterfly Valley which is home to diverse butterfly species. In the cooler months, families can go mountain-biking in the foothills of the mountains or trekking in the nearby Lycian Way.
