Located on the outskirts of the tranquil town of Bera in Navarre, northern Spain, Villa Uxaneko offers unique, characterful accommodation for four guests. With a charming, two-level living space and two bedrooms, guests will be completely won over by this renovated water mill that dates back to 1890. Brimming with ancient beams, exposed stone walls and remnants of its fascinating past, the villa oozes atmospheric appeal. Coupled with the babbling sound of the nearby river, the surrounding fields, and the wonderful countryside views, this idyllic nest is a perfect place to start exploring the northern Spain delights. Bera is located very close to the French border, 17 km from the nearest beach, and it is southwest of San Sebastian, the heavenly foodie city.
The Bidasoa River crosses Bera before entering Gipuzkoa at Endarlatsa and joining the Cantabrian Sea between the towns of Hendaye and Hondarribia. Bera may be small, but it is a beautiful, upcoming tourist destination with plenty of charm. San Sebastian is full of pintxos, playas, and photogenic vistas. There is no better place to eat in Spain than San Sebastian. You can choose to eat delicious oysters washed down with the local txakoli wine, or the culinary art of pintxos, from the bars lining the cobbled streets. Interestingly, this amazing place also boasts the second-most Michelin stars per capita. You can meander along the city’s promenades to its three urban beaches, listen out for the delightful Basque language, and enjoy the amazing architecture.
Villa Uxaneko enjoys comfortable, rustic furnishings in keeping with its character. The villa was originally renovated in 2016 to provide a comfortable living space whilst maintaining its nods from the past. The entire space is on two levels, with the kitchen and dining area just above the living room; it is one open space that all enjoys the same character. The white, modern kitchen offers all the appliances you need for your self-catering break. A fire sits in the corner, ready for chilly evenings. The dining table overlooks the living area, and its chair cushions are upholstered in the same cheerful, colourful fabric as the living room curtains. Just below the living space offers a comfy sofa, a television and a wonderful dresser. There is also a bathroom on this floor and doors that open onto the terrace.
The upper floor is home to both bedrooms and a shower room. One of the bedrooms boasts a comfy double bed and the other offers twin beds that are next to each other. Both enjoy characterful wooden floors, beamed ceilings and pretty fabrics. Guests share the upper floor shower room and the lower bathroom.
Outside, guests enjoy a pretty garden with deckchairs and beautiful views of the river. There is a lawn for sunbathing, enjoying the surrounding nature, and a wonderful spot to read your holiday book while enjoying the dreamy scenery. There is also a parking space for your car.

What you should know…
- The living space of the villa is fairly compact
- Please take care of young children as the villa sits next to the river and there is a drop from the kitchen to the living space
- Please do not book this villa for groups of youngsters

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa UxanekoVilla Uxaneko enjoys a gorgeous countryside spot close to the French border in northern Spain. It is in the town of Bera, a lovely, charming place 33 km from the gastronomic city of San Sebastian. Further away, but definitely worth the journey, is the city of Bilbao, filled with history, art, and flavour. The villages of Lesaka, Igantzi, Etxalar, Arantza and Sunbilla are all waiting to be discovered.
San Sebastian is a fantastic city with its unique Basque culture, its many celebrations, delicious cuisine, and the local euskal dantza dance. You can soak up the city's magical ambience in between astounding meals. Sandy beaches and rolling hills surround the town, and visitors and surfers head to the beaches to enjoy the excellent waves and observe the dramatic Ulia mountain. The beachside promenade leads to Monte Urgull, a mini mountain scattered with landmarks and topped with a giant statue of Jesus Christ. When you return from the mountain, you will be hungry for pintxo hopping or perhaps vermouth hopping; vermouth is a very popular drink in this city and you will not be able to miss it. Santa Clara Island sits in the middle of the bay and is easy island to visit by boat or kayak to enjoy your favourite tipple at the delightful seaside bar. Otherwise, you can hike up to the white lighthouse. San Sebastian is full of elegant art nouveau buildings, beautifully manicured parks, plazas and ornate bridges.
A bit further out. the incredible city of Bilbao boasts groundbreaking architecture, delicious eateries, and a very unique character. It is full of charming streets and bars offering pintxos. There are many famous eateries, including the legendary Cafe Iruna next to the Albia Gardens, which opened in 1903. There is plenty to do and see in Bilbao. Take in the city by crossing the Bilbao Estuary, walking along the riverbank and grabbing the Artxanda cable car linking the area of Campo Volantin with Mount Artxanda for some amazing views.
Additionally, admire the art of this wonderful city. The Zubizuri Bridge was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and offers wonderful views of the towers designed by the Japanese architect Isozaki Atea. A stroll along the estuary leads you to the magnificent Guggenheim Museum, made from 33,000 titanium sheets and designed by Frank Gehry. The sculptures outside the museum are equally famous, including the enormous dog with its steel base and living flowers. The stunning Euskalduna Palace, another jewel of contemporary architecture, hosts exhibitions and shows. Other buildings that you should include in your tour of Bilbao are the Bilbao Town Hall, Begona Basilica, Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, the colourful Mercado de la Ribera Market, Plaza Nueva, the cultural centre Azkuna Zentroa, and Deusto University.
If you are in Bilbao on a Sunday, head to the lovely Parque del Arenal, which hosts a pretty flower market. Nearby is the Casco Viejo, the 'old town', with its gorgeous old streets. Within it are Las Siete Calles, or the 'seven streets’, where you can peruse the shops, enjoy the architecture, and taste some of the very best pintxos. Another Sunday market takes place in Plaza Nueva. If you have enough time when in Bilbao, you can also take a sailing boat along the Nervion Estuary or make a trip to Portugalete and the Bizkaia Hanging Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by the architect behind the Eiffel Tower.

Best Suited For: All AgesVilla Uxaneko works well for a small family. It boasts two comfortable bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with twins. It sits in a lovely countryside area where you can enjoy wonderful walks, beach days and trips to the beach and the fabulous cities of San Sebastian and Bilbao.
San Sebastian enjoys an aquarium that is almost a century old, though it has been revamped; its specimens of ‘Nemo’ are hugely popular! The aquarium boasts a 360-degree acrylic tunnel suspended in water, surrounded by huge sharks and enormous manta rays. There is also a touching tank for children to touch the fish! The Eureka Science Museum is also a popular attraction. Children can discover the entertaining side of science. Especially popular are the electricity theatre where your hair will stand on end, the digital planetarium, the F1 car, the flight simulator, and the Orion spacecraft. There is even a rollercoaster! The Monte Igeldo amusement park enjoys the charm of old-fashioned attractions such as trampolines and a roller coaster.
Bilbao also offers many attractions to entertain children. The city’s Maritime Museum is popular, housed in an old shipyard and offering many interactive exhibits and large ships to see and climb into. Children enjoy learning how Bilbao turned into an important shipping and fishing city. Dona Casilda Park is one of the best and biggest parks in the city, with wide green spaces, ducks and geese on the lake and beautiful fountains. There are playgrounds and some fairground attractions during holiday periods; it is an excellent place for a picnic! Riding the Artxanda Funicular is also very popular. The old mountain railway ferries families up and down the dramatic Artxanda Mountain, high above Bilbao. It is a great experience and the views at the top are amazing! There are several walkways at the top and a few restaurants to enjoy. Another great way to see the city is to take one of the bilboats that pass many of the major sites on the water. Children will love pointing out the famous buildings, especially the dreamy Guggenheim Museum. In the Guggenheim, kids will be mesmerised by the scale of the artworks and the building. They love the sculptures outside too, especially Jeff Koons’ colourful Puppy, Tulips, and the giant spider Mamen by Louise Bourgeois.

Relaxing holidays
The sound of the water and the location of the house makes you disconnect from the city, although the downside is that it is too far from shops and the roads are narrow and unlit.
-
Charming house
Great experience, charming house next to the river, the hosts very friendly and attentive in everything. A success.
-
Well restored old mill
Well restored old mill two kilometres from the centre of Bera, clean and well equipped with all amenities. However, the ground floor is dark and damp (the river runs right next to the house). Also the house is located along a relatively busy road, so it is difficult to sit outside. Very friendly welcome from Carmen. The house is well situated for visiting the region, both on the French and Spanish sides. Many walks.
