THE REGION
The vibrant northern town of Alcúdia is truly a year-round location, offering life, history and culture throughout all seasons. Lying just one kilometre inland from the famous holiday resort of Port d’Alcúdia, it’s the ideal place to taste rich Mallorcan heritage without having to stray too far off the beaten path.
The pedestrian area offers inviting restaurants, cafés with beautiful terraces and cosy backyards, handicraft shops, stylish boutiques and Mallorcan specialities. Stroll by medieval houses, the proud town hall and the so-called Casas Señoriales, the majestic houses of past nobility. Here and there, you get a glimpse of one of the big, shady patios and time, and again you reach the outer rim of the town wall.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChildren love staying at Alcudia Mari. The villa is surrounded with greenery and offers an excellent swimming pool. Barcares is a tranquil resort with a small beach and lovely coves which are popular for snorkeling. With 30km of coast, the Alcudia area enjoys numerous coves and beaches as well as a set of small islands and islets. The beaches include Alcanada, Cala Poncet, Can Cap de Bou, Coll Baix, Es Barcares, Es Farallo, Playa de Alcudia, Sa Marina, Sant Joan, Sant Pere and S’Illot. It is a great place for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, parasailing, banana boat rides, pedal boats with slides, inflatable rides and scuba diving as well as hiking, running or cycling. Puerto Pollensa offers plenty of watersports as well as sandcastle building and swimming in the lovely azure shallow waters. You can take your pick of amazing boat rides on glass-bottom boats, catamarans and speed boats to watch dolphins, snorkel and dive. Puerto Pollensa’s floating water park is very popular. Children are given life jackets and swim to the park or use the rope connecting it to the beach. It is challenging and great fun.
The Hotel Bellevue Complex at Puerto Alcudia offers a thrilling go-karting playground called Kartingmania which is open to all visitors. There is a special track for 4-7 year olds and children over 7 years old can drive on the main track in customized, gasoline-powered karts.
During the summer months, a unique cultural event takes place in Alcudia Old Town, the Via Fora. It is a tour that tells the story of various historical events in the city, performed by a group of actors and musicians that will make you travel back in time. It is interesting and fun for children as the show includes interaction with the audience.
There are three waterparks on Mallorca including the nearby Hidropark in Alcudia. Set in lush landscaped gardens, it boasts thrilling kamikaze slides, a wave pool, swimming, gentle slides for very young children and water playgrounds in its 40,000 metres. There are also inflatable castles, trampolines, giant floating balls and a golf course.
A popular outing for families is to visit some of Mallorca’s interesting caves. Coves d’Arta’s guided tour takes you through various chambers to the ‘Queen of Pillars’, a huge stalagmite 22 metres tall. Coves de Drach, which means Caves of the Dragon, is the most famous of the caves. It has four caves where musicians play classical music from the boats on the underground lake.
