This smart, four-bedroom, three-bathroom attic apartment is perfectly positioned in front of the picturesque Canelas beach in the Spanish town of Portonovo.

As soon as you enter, you’ll be enveloped by bright interiors which marry vintage flourishes with modern decor. Two designer-influenced double bedrooms, a bathroom, and a comfortable living room adjoin the stylish entrance hallway, and the living room leads to a small terrace with superb views of Canelas beach.

Making your way up the stairs up to the first floor, you’ll be greeted by Spanish homeliness. Plush furnishings combine with low ceilings and soft lighting to create exactly the kind of relaxed ambience you come on holiday for. This level boasts a living and dining area, a bathroom, an en-suite bedroom, and a fully-equipped, beautifully tiled kitchen. All four bedrooms are beautifully designed in bright and bold colours and fixtures; two are en-suite and there’s also a sofa bed which sleeps two people. A cradle is also available for the smaller members of the party.

To really ramp up the holiday atmosphere, head outside onto the large terrace, boasting spectacular sea views, a gorgeous arbour complete with stylish dining table and chairs, and a chill-out area with a bed. This is the perfect place to while away the warm evenings and relax with a glass of wine. In the daytime, guests love to spend hours here either reading or topping up their tan; with views this good, we know why some people barely leave the terrace!

On the ground floor of the building is the large communal pool, just waiting to be enjoyed. Take a dip in between tanning sessions to cool off during those hot Mediterranean afternoons and enjoy the sights and sounds of Portonovo town.

What you should know…

  • The outdoor communal pool has space to lounge and tan, but guests wanting total privacy will be best sticking to the rooftop terrace
  • The apartment comfortably sleeps ten people though the relatively small floor area means the apartment can soon become quite cosy!
  • The pool is unfenced and while younger kiddies love to make a splash in there, they should stay supervised

The apartment is located in Portonovo, a charming fishing village in the Galician region of Spain, which thrives with visitors during the summer months. Coves, bays, and inlets dot the coastline of this region, allowing Galicia to boast the most extensive coastline in Spain!

Portonovo is connected to the neighbouring town of Sanxenxo - famous for its restaurants, beaches and bars - by a delightful promenade. Visitors can join locals in a leisurely stroll from one town to the other, an event in itself, thanks to the stunning landscape. The path has spectacular views at every turn and visitors are rewarded with a cool sea breeze as they make their way through the green forest with views of the blue water.

Further along the coastline is Rías Baixas (or ‘lower estuary’), which holds a number of estuaries and inlets, including Aldán, Arousa, Pontevedra and Vigo. The area is known by locals as the 'Galician Caribbean', and for good reason! Between them, they hold more than 20 coves of fine white sand beaches, many of which are deserted and only accessible by boat. The estuaries are known for their calm waters and blue seas, making them the perfect spot for relaxing on the beach and exploring the hidden coves. The Aldán inlet is also perfect for hiking. Take a walk to Cabo Udra, a 13-kilometre circular route in a protected natural area where bottlenose dolphins and porpoises are quite frequently seen in the waters.

The region of Galicia is famous for its history, seafood, and wild beaches. It’s particularly well known for its shellfish pulled straight from the sea: think king prawns, king scallops, mussels, crabs and lobsters straight into signature Galician dishes like the Pulpo a la Feira (Octopus cooked with potatoes and seasoned with paprika), Arroz con Marisco (Galician paella) and Mariscada (Seafood platter). Wine is also a staple of the cuisine here and Rías Baixas boasts beautiful wineries which produce some of the world’s finest wines. Romanesque churches and chapels dot the same landscapes of the traditional wineries and the region perfectly combines gastronomy and culture amongst the historical sights of Galician monasticism.

A thirty-minute drive away is Pontevedra which prides itself on tradition and hospitality. The city has plenty of historic buildings, churches, monuments, attractive plazas, and a large shopping district. The old town begins to really thrive at night, with lively bars creating a vibrant atmosphere that continues well into the early hours.

About the Region & Getting There

About Galicia

Like many parts of Spain, Galicia has its very own identity that has remained intact through its regional dialect and distinguishing culture. Although Galicia is recognised for its holy traditions, we urge budding tourists to also consider its astonishing green countryside & rivers and its UNESCO World Heritage sites. Occasionally you may even hear the gentle tootling of bagpipes, known locally as the Galician Gaita, along this northern corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

You're likely to fly into Santiago de Compostela, which is the capital of Galicia and is probably best known for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and its route. Many of the travellers embark on this journey by foot and tend to be mesmerised by this fine city at the end of their trek. Casco Viejo, or the Old Town, is a good place to end or even start your holiday. This area of the city is blessed with markets, restaurants, bars and buildings from a bygone era. After exhausting yourself in the busyness of the city, take a day trip to Praia de Rodas, on the gorgeous Cíes Islands. These small islands, accessible by boat from Vigo, Baiona, or Cangas, have been noted as having some of the best beaches in the world. It has to be seen to be believed!

Galicia is divided into four key regions: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and our favourite – Pontevedra. A Galician proverb states that 'Pontevedra gives water to travellers'. We firmly believe this to be true, as this particular part of Galicia has everything a traveller could need for an unforgettable experience and it almost feels like this city is constantly giving back. Whilst you holiday in Pontevedra you will realise that days are structured around mealtime. And why wouldn't they be? With some of the best seafood you will experience in Spain and the noteworthy Albariño wine, you may notice your jeans feeling a little tighter toward the end of your holiday. You will be glad to know that your waistline need not be a cause for concern though! Pontevedra is blessed with some of the best hiking trails, medieval monasteries, estuaries, and valleys within Spain. Don't forget about the coastline either! Rarely you will you find so many empty beaches, so make the most of this privacy and just embrace the nature around you.

Galicia is still an unspoilt part of the world. It has everything a diverse group of friends & family need to have a glorious adventure.

Getting There

Galicia is served by either Santiago de Compostela Airport, A Coruña Airport, or Vigo Airport. Various train lines connect the main cities and towns of Galicia to other destinations in Northern and Central Spain. Hop on and enjoy the view from your comfy seat; there's even a Galician Tourist Train pass! This discounted rail pass gives you access to various rail routes created by the Galician Regional Government and based on key elements of the region. Follow the Lighthouse Route along the northern coastline and stop to admire the lighthouses and gorgeous sea views, or hop on and follow one of the Ribeira Sacra Wine Routes to visit the lovely towns and wineries where acclaimed Galician wines are made and enjoyed. Check out the government website to grab your pass and plan your trip!

From the UK:
Direct flights are available from London with easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling, and many others. Although, travellers should be aware that Vigo Airport only receives domestic flights, so a stopover is needed if you wish to travel to this airport. Chartered flights are also available from several other UK airports.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

Kids will love a trip to the Cíes Islands. These real-life treasure islands reportedly hold buried goods from pirates' past, and according to legend, Francis Drake used to hide out in the secluded coves of the archipelago. With all this talk of treasure islands, it’s not hard to get the imagination of the little ones excited about this rugged piece of beauty. Kids can go snorkelling and kayaking in the clean, clear waters of the archipelago, which are home to more than 100 species of marine life. There’s also a campsite which organises free children’s activities in the morning and evening. Here they can make new friends in the play area, join in with the organised games, or get crafty at workshops.

The surrounding estuaries are famous for their tranquil beaches, and some are accessible by horse. Rías Baixas has reputable horse riding schools, which will also take enthusiastic riders to the Mougás river pools in nearby Pontevedra and to Aloia Natural Park. A two-hour drive will bring you to Ribiera Sacra, where you can take an excursion on horseback through colourful landscapes full of natural beauty with views overlooking the rivers.

For a day out, Costa da Morte is a ninety-minute drive away where the kids can continue the buccaneering fantasy. This rocky coastline is stunning but treacherous and has a history of shipwrecks - perfect for young imaginations! However, the beaches are calm and safe, which makes them popular for families with children. The coastline is dotted with charming fishing villages, with two favourites being Laxe, and Finisterre. Laxe has a lovely walk to the lighthouse, and Finisterre got its name from the ancient Romans, who believed it to be the “End of the Earth”.

An hour's drive will take you to Baiona, one of Spain’s most memorable coastal towns with a yacht club. Monte Real yacht club holds sailing courses and a summer sailing school, where kids can head out onto the blue waters of the harbour for a few hours with experienced staffers. For the committed junior sailors, take advantage of the club’s weekly sailing course for children between seven and sixteen years old, which includes a specialised trainer and all the necessary equipment.
