Villa Elorrio is a delightful rural retreat that boasts the most phenomenal mountain and countryside views. With amazing wooden and glass architecture, the panorama from every space is wondrous. Villa Elorrio enjoys a special elevated position in the hamlet of Gastaneta, just outside of the wonderful village of Elorrio. With three bedrooms, the villa is perfect for a family or group of friends.

Elorrio is surrounded by mountains, 41 kilometres from the city of Bilbao and not far from the gorgeous, foodie seaside resort of San Sebastian. Sitting in the lush Duranguesado Valley with the Zumelegi River running through it, Elorrio enjoys an atmospheric historic centre bursting with palaces, ancestral houses and coats of arms. It has been declared ‘of cultural interest’ with many of its amazing buildings built in the 17th and 18th centuries. With the Oiz and Intxorta mountains looming over the village along with the limestone summits Anboto and Udalaitz, the landscape is truly magnificent. Just a short distance away, guests can enjoy Bilbao, a city filled with history, art and flavour and San Sebastian, framed by golden beaches and lush hillsides and offering a venerable dining scene as well as its grand architecture.

Villa Elorrio is a semi-detached villa enjoying a very generous sized private garden. It boasts a wonderfully characterful interior with an open plan living space, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The living room enjoys attractive wooden beams and gorgeous arched windows that drown the space in natural light and make the most of the extraordinary scenery outside. A comfy corner sofa sits by the feature fireplace, perfect for chilly evenings and a dining table sits in the perfect position so that guests can dine with a view. The modern white kitchen offers all the appliances that you need for your self-catering stay. The main living space leads to a glass extension where you can relax and enjoy the countryside and mountain views. Doors open to the garden and a terrace.

The first floor is home to two of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms. The master bedroom enjoys a comfy double bed, attractive wooden floors and ceilings and access to the balcony where you can enjoy the scenery. The second bedroom boasts twin beds and yet more beautiful scenes from the windows. The bathroom offers his and hers sinks, a bath and an overhead shower. The final bedroom is located on the top floor in the eaves with a double bed and a huge window so that you can admire the views as soon as you wake up. Another bathroom offers a shower.

Outside, guests can enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace using the villa’s barbecue or simply pick a spot to relax and enjoy the far-reaching vistas of the mountains, valley, countryside, forest and the town. If you can tear yourselves away from the magical views, there is much to discover, delicious food to eat and mountains to be climbed!

Villa Elorrio is located on the top of a hill just outside the charming village of Elorrio. In Elorrio, guests find shops, a bakery, cafes, bars and restaurants as well as gorgeous architecture. Nearby attractions include Ruta por Palacios y Jardines and the Necropolis de Arguineta. The necropolis is a series of sandstone graves and funerary stelas from the 9th century, one of the most important funeral monuments in the Basque region. Near Santa Catalina you will find the Berriozabeleta fountain. There are fantastic hiking paths that you can take to enjoy this dreamy, scenic region including the Monte Besaide, Monte Amboto and Monte Udalaitx.

Elorrio enjoys a historical heritage of enormous value. Set in a lush green valley, Elorrio is brimming with stone and carved masonry from the 17th and 18th centuries. The town hall and the Arezpakotxaga Palace sit in Gernikako Arbola Square in the old part of town. Very close to these buildings is the Don Telmo entrance, one of the six entrances of the ancient wall surrounding the village. Other notable buildings include the baroque Palace of Marques de Tola, the Santa Ana Monastery and the Church of San Agustin. Elorrio hosts a major festival, the Ferixa Nauikoak, which takes place early in September and another, the Errebonbilloak, which takes place on the first Sunday in October.

Bilbao, the city of the Guggenheim built in 1997, offers ground breaking architecture, delicious eateries and a very unique character. It is full of charming streets and bars offering pintxos. There are many famous eateries, including the legendary Cafe Iruna next to the Albia Gardens which opened in 1903. There is plenty to do and see in Bilbao. You can cross the Bilbao Estuary and walk along the riverbank, you can take the Artxanda cable car linking the area of Campo Volantin with Mount Artxanda for some amazing city views or visit the art museums. The Zubizuri Bridge was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and offers wonderful views of the towers designed by the Japanese architect Isozaki Atea. A stroll along the estuary leads you to the magnificent Guggenheim Museum made from 33,000 titanium sheets and designed by Frank Gehry. The sculptures outside the museum are equally famous including the enormous dog with its steel base and living flowers. The stunning Euskalduna Palace, another jewel of contemporary architecture, hosts exhibitions and shows. Other buildings that you should include in your tour of Bilbao are the Bilbao Town Hall, Begona Basilica, Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, the colourful Mercado de la Ribera Market, Plaza Neuva Square, the cultural centre Azkuna Zentroa and the Deusto University. If you are there on a Sunday, the lovely Arenal Park hosts a pretty flower market. The area known as ‘the seven streets’ is where you will find the Ribera market amongst the cobblestones. Here you will taste some of the very best pintxos. Another Sunday market takes place in Plaza Nueva. If you have enough time when you are in Bilbao you can take a sailing boat along the Nervion Estuary or make a trip to Portugalete and the Bizkaia Hanging Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by the architect behind the Eiffel Tower.

If you would like a beach day, you can head to Getxo, twenty minutes from Bilbao or over to San Sebastian. The culinary city of San Sebastian is blessed with an enchanting coastline, the Playa de la Concha. Surfers head one beach over to the thrilling waves of Playa de la Zurriola. San Sebastian enjoys a justly deserved reputation as one of the world’s great dining destinations. You can snack on fresh oysters, stop for pintxos at one of the bars that litter the streets or linger over a decadent, multi-course feast in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Just offshore lies the Isla de Santa Clara, a small hilly island that you can visit. San Sebastian is full of elegant art nouveau buildings, beautifully manicured parks, plazas and ornate bridges. It is a beautiful city that should not be missed.

Villa Elorrio is perfect for a family holiday. There is so much space in the villa and the garden is huge! Lovers of mountain and countryside walks have certainly picked well with this villa. The views are astounding from the both villa and the garden. You will soon want to get walking!

Elorrio is brimming with magical buildings as well as good shops and family friendly cafes and bars. Children love trying the pintxos.

Bilbao offers many attractions to entertain children. The city’s Maritime Museum is popular, housed in an old shipyard and offering many interactive exhibits and large ships to see and climb into. Children enjoy learning how Bilbao turned into an important shipping and fishing city. Dona Casilda Park is one of the best and biggest parks in the city, with wide green spaces, ducks and geese on the lake and beautiful fountains. There are playgrounds and some fairground attractions during holiday periods. It is a great place for a picnic. Riding the Artxanda Funicular is popular. The old mountain railway ferries families up and down the dramatic Artxanda Mountain, high above Bilbao. It is a great experience and the views at the top are amazing. There are several walkways at the top and a few restaurants. Another great way to see the city is to take one of the bilboats that pass many of the major sites on the water. Children love pointing out the famous buildings, especially the dreamy Guggenheim Museum. In the Guggenheim, children are mesmerised by the scale of the artworks and the building. They love the sculptures outside too, especially Jeff Koons’ colour Puppy and Tulips and the giant spider Mamen by Louise Bourgeois. The Basque Museum is very interesting. It is housed in an old 17th century church and college and offers thousands of objects from old fishing equipment to giants that are used during Basque festivals.

Away from Bilbao, the Painted Forest of Oma, is hugely popular. It is a free attraction with colourfully painted trees by the artist and sculpto Agustin Ibarrola, which include images of eyes, figures and animals.

Along the coast from Bilbao is the Getxo Aquarium in the small town of Getxo. There are twenty six aquariums full of different sea life which they can enjoy up close. They will see butterfly fish, clown fish like Disney’s Nemo, anemones, corals and crustaceans. It is easy to combine this with a beach day.

Reviews

  • Great family holidays

    on 11/09/2020

We spent some great family days. The attention from the owner was excellent, we felt welcome at all times.

  • Exceptional House

    on 14/08/2020

We spent several days in this house/villa and they were exceptional. Located in a perfect location to visit both cities (Bilbao, Vitoria, San Sebastian), and to go to Natural Parks (Urkiola, Gorbea, Aizkorri, Urdaibai) or enjoy a beach (Zumaya). The house is exceptional and in the surroundings where it is located (Elorrrio) as well. The communication with P. (owner), perfect and with the neighbour (M.), also, very friendly and welcoming.
