Ideal for Kids

The delightful Casa Busturia is an apartment (within a large house) for four to six guests in the small, tranquil town of Busturia. With a fabulous garden and gorgeous mountain views, the apartment is part of a chalet style building which lies in the countryside of the Basque Country. Busteria enjoys a stunning natural location, surrounded by nature and the Urdaibai wetlands, listed by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and on the list of must-see locations. The Urdaibai Estuary is formed in the mouth of the Oka River, in Vizcaya. It looks totally magical, brimming with beautiful plants, flowers and wildlife. It is a great spot for those that love the outdoors and abundant nature.

The town Busturia dates back to the Middle Ages, with the Palace of Altamira being build in the 10th century. The Church of Santa Maria de Axpre was built in the 11th century. The town is just 5 km from the nearest beach and 41 km from Bilbao in the direction of San Sebastian. Bilbao is a city filled with history, art and flavour and San Sebastian, framed by golden beaches and lush hillsides, offers an astounding dining scene as well as grand architecture and a long list of cultural events.

This cheery apartment is built over two upper floors. It is spacious, bright and comfortable. The lower floor is home to a bright and airy open plan living space with its modern kitchen and dining area at one end. With bright orange walls it is a happy, sociable space with everything you need for your self-catering break. A modern open staircase breaks the space and leads upstairs to the bedrooms. The living area is very spacious and enjoys a double sofabed, television, modern art and a pool table for some friendly, competitive fun. One of the bathrooms is located on this level with a bath.

The upper floor offers two fairly compact bedrooms and one shower room. One of the rooms boasts twin beds which are placed next to each other creating one huge bed, or they can be separated. The other enjoys a comfy double bed. The modern bathroom offers a shower.

Outside, guests enjoy the large, lush garden and a covered alfresco dining area with a barbecue. The mountain views are amazing. It is such a quiet spot surrounded by forests where you can plan your beach days and Basque adventures. The apartment is within a larger house with the owners living on the other side, they are lovely and will keep to themselves.

Casa Busturia lies in the countryside five kilometres from sandy Basque beaches, deep in the Biscayan estuary of Urdaibai. The location is 41 km from Bilbao and close to San Sebastian. The old port of Bermeo is 8 km from the apartment with its coastline featuring cliffs, spectacular rocks such as San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and the islands of Alatz and Izaro. Bermeo is one of the main fishing ports in the Basque Country. There are five beaches, all within ten minutes drive of the apartment.

Between the capes of Matxitxaco and Ogono, the 12 km stretch of sandbanks were declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1984. It is an area of holm oak forests, incredible wildlife and a richly diverse natural landscape. There are low altitude mountains with steep slopes that give way to a valley that leads to the Cantabrian Sea, forming a wide estuary. The floodplain turns to marshland while shaping cliffs and beaches. The wetland is a stopping point for many migrating birds. The Urdaibai Bird Centre is very informative.

The splendid city of Bilbao boasts ground breaking architecture, delicious eateries and a very unique character. It is full of charming streets and bars offering pintxos. There are many famous eateries, including the legendary Cafe Iruna next to the Albia Gardens which opened in 1903. There is plenty to do and see in Bilbao. You can cross the Bilbao Estuary and walk along the riverbank, you can take the Artxanda cable car linking the area of Campo Volantin with Mount Artxanda for some amazing city views or visit the art museums. The Zubizuri Bridge was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and offers wonderful views of the towers designed by the Japanese architect Isozaki Atea. A stroll along the estuary leads you to the magnificent Guggenheim Museum made from 33,000 titanium sheets and designed by Frank Gehry. The sculptures outside the museum are equally famous including the enormous dog with its steel base and living flowers. The stunning Euskalduna Palace, another jewel of contemporary architecture, hosts exhibitions and shows. Other buildings that you should include in your tour of Bilbao are the Bilbao Town Hall, Begona Basilica, Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, the colourful Mercado de la Ribera Market, Plaza Neuva Square, the cultural centre Azkuna Zentroa and the Deusto University. If you are there on a Sunday, the lovely Arenal Park hosts a pretty flower market. The area known as ‘the seven streets’ is where you will find the Ribera market amongst the cobblestones. Here you will taste some of the very best pintxos. Another Sunday market takes place in Plaza Nueva. If you have enough time when you are in Bilbao you can take a sailing boat along the Nervion Estuary or make a trip to Portugalete and the Bizkaia Hanging Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by the architect behind the Eiffel Tower.

The culinary city of San Sebastian is blessed with an enchanting coastline, the Playa de la Concha. Surfers head one beach over to the thrilling waves of Playa de la Zurriola. San Sebastian enjoys a justly deserved reputation as one of the world’s great dining destinations. You can snack on fresh oysters, stop for pintxos at one of the bars that litter the streets or linger over a decadent, multi-course feast in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Just offshore lies the Isla de Santa Clara, a small hilly island that you can visit. San Sebastian is full of elegant art nouveau buildings, beautifully manicured parks, plazas and ornate bridges. It is a beautiful city that should not be missed.

Casa Busturia is a delightful first and second floor apartment. It is ideal for a family wanting to discover the delights of the Basque Country. Located close to Busturia and the Urdaibai Estuary, nature loving families are delighted by the fauna and flora. There are a number of beaches within ten minutes of the apartment. Although this is an apartment, it is set in a beautiful garden with an alfresco dining terrace. The Urdaibai Bird Centre is excellent, a place where children will learn a lot about the area and its migratory birds.

Bilbao offers many attractions to entertain children. The city’s Maritime Museum is popular, housed in an old shipyard and offering many interactive exhibits and large ships to see and climb into. Children enjoy learning how Bilbao turned into an important shipping and fishing city. Dona Casilda Park is one of the best and biggest parks in the city, with wide green spaces, ducks and geese on the lake and beautiful fountains. There are playgrounds and some fairground attractions during holiday periods. It is a great place for a picnic. Riding the Artxanda Funicular is popular. The old mountain railway ferries families up and down the dramatic Artxanda Mountain, high above Bilbao. It is a great experience and the views at the top are amazing. There are several walkways at the top and a few restaurants. Another great way to see the city is to take one of the bilboats that pass many of the major sites on the water. Children love pointing out the famous buildings, especially the dreamy Guggenheim Museum. In the Guggenheim, children are mesmerised by the scale of the artworks and the building. They love the sculptures outside too, especially Jeff Koons’ colour Puppy and Tulips and the giant spider Mamen by Louise Bourgeois. The Basque Museum is very interesting. It is housed in an old 17th century church and college and offers thousands of objects from old fishing equipment to giants that are used during Basque festivals.

Away from Bilbao, the Painted Forest of Oma, is hugely popular. It is a free attraction with colourfully painted trees by the artist and sculpto Agustin Ibarrola, which include images of eyes, figures and animals.

Along the coast from Bilbao is the Getxo Aquarium in the small town of Getxo. There are twenty six aquariums full of different sea life which they can enjoy up close. They will see butterfly fish, clown fish like Disney’s Nemo, anemones, corals and crustaceans. It is easy to combine this with a beach day.

San Sebastian also enjoys an aquarium that is almost a century old, though it was revamped. It specimens of ‘Nemo’ are hugely popular. The aquarium boasts a 360 degree acrylic tunnel suspended in water, surrounded by huge sharks and enormous manta rays. There is also a touching tank for children to touch the fish. San Sebastian’s Eureka Science Museum is also popular. Children can discover the entertaining side of science. Especially popular are the electricity theatre where your hair will stand on end, the digital planetarium, the F1 car, the flight simulator and the Orion spacecraft. There is even a rollercoaster. The Monte Igeldo amusement park enjoys the charm of old-fashioned attractions such as trampolines and a roller coaster.

  • Wonderful apartment

    on 12/09/2019

The flat is wonderful, the setting is idyllic and the owners are more than kind. They left us everything we needed and even gave us food from their garden and some delicious Gernika peppers.

  • We will definitely return

    on 21/09/2018

The flat is great, complete and nicely furnished. You even have your own little garden. The road to the house is a challenge the first time, you wonder if it will be alright. This you soon forget when you arrive, what a top location. The owner is very nice and hospitable. We had a wonderful week and will definitely return.

  • We loved this Appartement

    on 26/08/2018

We loved this Appartement. It is situated in a very calm area, in the middle of the nature. It is well equipped, we actually didn't miss anything. XXX is very friendly and gave us good tips. We all enjoyed the billiard :-) The only little dissadvantage is, that you actually don't use the big garden as you can see at the photo, but a small part at the back.

  • Cosy and pleasant flat

    on 26/09/2017

Very good service. Very cosy and pleasant flat. The only drawback, it is a bit isolated, the access is by a narrow road with curves.

  • Well equipped

    on 22/08/2017

We enjoyed a wonderful week at Casa Busturia. The apartment adjoins the owners house and forms just a part of the property shown. It is well equipped and even has a pool table that kept us all entertained into the evenings.

  • Recommended!!!

    on 09/05/2016

The house is in perfect condition, ideal to go with friends. The location is not very convenient for sightseeing in bilbao as it is in the mountains, 45 min drive from bilbao, but recommended!!!
