La Cueva is a traditional and cosy rustic style cave house nestling in greenery right in the centre of Sacromonte with marvellous views of the Alhambra Palace. Offering guests, a truly unique holiday base whilst being a short distance from the amenities, this charming home epitomises character and authenticity. La Cueva’s restoration has been careful to maintain a traditional feel, which means the original stone walls are still there to remind you of the local history and heritage of Sacromonte. The house feels both restful and cosy, making it a comfortable place to totally switch off and soak up the idyllic surroundings.

A cobbled stone set of stairs takes you up to the front door of La Cueva’s first-floor accommodation. Traditional whitewashed stone architecture extends throughout, acting as a decorative piece of its own. Once you are inside La Cueva, you will find yourself surprised with how open it feels, rooms extend into each other naturally and you’ll get a sense of rural Spanish living, together with warmth and cosiness. The sound inside is softened and almost muffled, whilst the light white stone walls keep everything feel bright. The house blends simple homely décor and furnishings, together with quirky architectural features such as a spiral staircase and archways. The front door opens into the well-equipped kitchen space, and conveniently close by up some steps is the bright and simply furnished lounge. Sharing this space is a dining table, chairs for starting the mornings with a delicious breakfast, plus a sofa and a television for spending cosy evenings in watching films. A refreshing country sweet breeze flows in through the window close by. Back down by the kitchen, an archway leads into one of the three simple vestibule bedrooms. Reached to by an archway door, you’ll find another bedroom, plus there’s a concealed nook furnished with cushions making it a cute place for quiet reading. Two of the bedrooms at Le Cueve each come with one double bed, and the third room features a pull-out bed. All the rooms share a bathroom with a shower. Enhancing the calming décor of the house are works of art and a Moorish influence with prettily painted pottery creating a homely feel throughout.

Outside via steps is a wonderfully spacious tiled terrace offering space in which to unwind and making it the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink, morning coffee or casual meals. There’s a cute little table and chairs, plus a parasol for when you want to sunbathe with a little shade. The real wow factor here is the incredible countryside view and the view of the Alhambra – it really is spectacular, and guests can admire this view and the winding street below from the calming sanctuary above.

Staying at La Cueva puts you within easy reaching location of exploring Granada and all of its sights. With its magnificent backdrop of Spain’s snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada will delight, surprise and seduce you big time. From incredible sightseeing at its breathtaking, hilltop Moorish Alhambra palace with its ornate chambers, gardens and fountains, to its fine cathedral, cobbled backstreets, colourful tapas bars, excellent shopping and flamboyant flamenco-based nightlife, there are endless ways to fill your days, whether you’re out to relax, soak up some of Spain’s richest history or simply live it up.

Granada is one of Spain’s most visited cities, so it’s crammed full of tourist shops of every description. In the Caldererias area, you’ll find a bazaar-like maze of streets bulging with Moorish-style stalls groaning with inlaid wooden boxes, iron lanterns and leather goods, whilst elsewhere there’s a huge variety of Andalusian shops selling castanets, glazed tiles and hand-painted ceramics. For modern-day shopping, make a beeline for the boutiques and department stores clustered around the cathedral and Puerta Real.

Granada is loaded with eateries, so it’s foodie heaven. Reflecting the city’s Moorish tradition, the old Albaicin quarter has exotic tearooms and restaurants serving delicious tagine and couscous dishes. Everywhere else, tapas bars take precedence, with stacks of sunny pavement tables primed for tasty titbits like quails’ eggs, cured ham, manchego cheese accompanied by cold Spanish beer, sherry or wine. And don’t forget the many traditional restaurants to dig into favourites like gazpacho, flamenco eggs or even bull's testicle omelette! Early evening’s also the cue to enjoy popular chocolate con churros, delicious doughnut sticks dipped in hot chocolate.

The city also has a bustling market scene. The best known is the Mercado San Augustin. Visit here and browse the stalls selling fresh produce and tasty snacks, and best still, you’re just a short stroll from the cathedral.

A great and popular shopping spot with locals is Mercadillo de Plaza Larga - a market held every Saturday. It’s perfect for picking up fresh fruit and vegetables that you can take back to the house to feast on and cook up meals.

Whether you tapas-safari your way round the compact, easy-to-explore city centre, or spend time discovering the hidden caves of Albaicin, a Granada holiday is sure to leave you hungry for more

Reviews

  • Delightfully quirky

    on 16/04/2023

Accommodation is delightfully quirky and very generously supplied with goodies. Spectacular location - views from the terraces only slightly spoiled by the building site just below the property (which has also made the access a bit more hazardous unfortunately- at least we only have to carry the suitcases up once!).
Starting to explore the local area and find nearest shops - plenty of cafes & restaurants. Numerous buses though we haven’t yet worked out how best to use them. The lack of internal doors - bedrooms only separated by curtains - might not suit some parties but sleeping in the caves is surprisingly quiet and cool.

  • Super location

    on 23/08/2020

Very nice cave house in a super location. Fantastic view of Alhambra. All facilities available, highly recommended!

  • Not your average house

    on 29/04/2019

Not the average apartment. Actually it is cave home but renovated, clean and bright, equipped with everything necessary. I mean, it is a apartment/home built into the caves in the side of mountain. It has kitchen area, living room and 3 separate bedrooms. Equipment is fresh, everything works as intended. It was great experience - something unique and fun. However beds are a little bit narrow. Maybe not the best place in colder weather though electric heaters are provided.

  • Alhambra within walking distance

    on 07/01/2019

It was a good experience to live in the caves. Thanks to the host who was there at all times. Very close to the Alhambra, within walking distance. The only downside is that there are no shops nearby (only a small one 300 mts away which has nothing or what it has is out of date) so I recommend bringing supplies and food for the stay. Ideal to go with children or large families. Recommended
