Cortijo María Camila is a spacious Spanish farmstead that has been renovated in rustic-chic style to provide modern luxuries and comfort, while still maintaining its traditional Andalusian architecture and heritage.

The carefully planned interior design remains sympathetic to local custom and features many Spanish antiques and locally made, hand-crafted furnishings. Touches such as hand-stitched Suzani tapestries above the beds lend an atmosphere of elegance, while the many private indoor and outdoor lounges, terraces and pool maximize the relaxation potential and take full advantage of the surrounding views.

Being situated on a private hilltop, the grounds of the property slope away on three sides, revealing almond and olive groves and a beautiful onsite vineyard. Numerous private terraces and gardens surround the cortijo, where Mediterranean and exotic plants and trees blend harmoniously into the surrounding natural landscape. Peaceful, panoramic views of mountains surround the property, while the valley to the south opens wide to greet the Mediterranean Sea some 15 miles away.

The Villa
An enclosed leafy courtyard greets visitors upon entry with a fountain and shaded pergola facing the peak of Maroma.

Beyond the courtyard, the kitchen opens onto a small herb garden along the side of the house, which leads to the front terrace with a covered outdoor dining area. From this terrace a set of stairs lead down to the pool area (the only way to access the pool), with majestic views toward the sea and maintained gardens all around, a covered summer kitchen with built-in barbecue and outdoor dining area.

The front dining terrace also leads around to the south side of the property, with a modern landscaped garden leading back to the master bedroom terrace. Access to this area can be restricted to ensure that those staying in the master bedroom can enjoy total privacy.

All on one level, Cortijo María Camila has wood-beam ceilings and terracotta floors with underfloor heating and air-conditioning throughout.

The region around Cortijo María Camila is known as La Axarquia, an ancient land rich not only with Moorish history, but Roman and Phonecian before that. It is a beautiful, largely mountainous region that nestles next to the Andalusian coast with a fertile agricultural production founded on grape (and wine!) production, olives, avocados and tropical fruits.

The local village is only 8-10 minutes away and not only provides all basic amenities but also marks the start of the Mudehar route, a string of Moorish white-washed villages distinguishable by Mudehar architecture that's reflective of the region's rich history. Nestled amongst the slopes of Maroma, the tallest peak in the region, you'll find an excellent driving tour stretching some 25 km to Competa.

The cliffs and beaches around Nerja (about 40 km away) are among the most stunning of the southern coast, while Nerja itself is great for shopping and dining. Yet the nearest beaches, in Torre del Mar, are only about 25 km away and reachable within half an hour. Here you will also find the nearest golf course, while all along the coast one can find opportunities for water sports and fishing.

Malaga, at 50 km (within an hour), offers a surprising level of sophistication and culture, cosmopolitan street life, dining and shopping. The old Moorish Alcazaba, the bustling port development known as Muelle Uno, the cathedral and the botanical garden are some of the highlights and are well worth exploring. Malaga also has the nearest airport and is also accessible within one hour. Granada and the famous Alhambra are accessible for a day trip at 100 km (within 1.5 hours), as are the ancient Cordoba Mosque (170 km, within 2 hours) and the wonders of Seville (220 km, 2.5 - 3 hours).

The ski season in the Sierra Nevada mountains (the second highest range in Europe) above Granada is a long one, usually running from November into May, and at less than 1.5 hours drive makes for an easy and delightfully different day trip.

Security deposit €1,000 charged to client’s credit card by the owner and refunded two weeks after departure, subject to full inspection.

End of stay cleaning included? Yes. However, guests are required to leave the accommodation clean, tidy and in the same condition as on their arrival. Any extra cleaning, laundry, maintenance and/or rubbish disposal required will be charged against the security deposit.

How long have you owned the property?
We moved here in 2009 and immediately began renovations. We have lived here for 11 years and been in business for 10.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
When we first came to visit the property, I already fell in love on the approach, literally at first sight! Driving along the ridge leading up to the property, you see El Carligto appear perched out on it’s own private hilltop with the Mediterranean Sea glistening beyond, with 360 degree views of mountains and valleys, and a lake below, opposite the sea. I actually said to my partner at this point, before ever setting foot on the property, “I want to live there!”.

Do you have a favourite room in the property?
That is a difficult question… The poolside summer kitchen at El Carligto is truly marvellous and you can pass an entire day without realising. However, the covered back terrace at El Carligto is probably my favourite spot. It feels hidden, though adjacent to the main courtyard entrance, and it opens toward the valley and the sea with always a gentle breeze passing through the pines just off of the terrace, while the bamboo slatted roof casts filtered light to ease the heat of the sun. There’s a massive fireplace there for chilly evenings or a late event, but it’s the perfect place for a quiet retreat with a good book or for simple midday contemplation.

Really do?
Explore Malaga. The city has invested millions over the past 20+ years in a steady improvement of the already beautiful aesthetic of the city, and in the arts and culture. It has a rich history, with Phoenician roots from 3000 years ago, and an old Moorish fortress in the style of the Alhambra from some 600 years ago. There are more than 30 museums, hundreds of tapas bars spread throughout the pedestrianised historic centre, a port area lined with shops, and busy beaches right within the city.

Really eat? 

Guests really must book one of our private chefs for service right at the property. It’s not at all an exaggeration to say that the food served at the property is better than any restaurant within a 45 minute drive!

Really see?
The Alhambra in Granada is a site not to be missed. It’s the most popular historical site in Spain and one of the most visited sites in all of Europe. The history, the ancient architecture and the well preserved and replicated gardens are all mind boggling. The Mezquita in Cordoba is only a bit further afield and also an unforgettable vision.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
There are some very dramatic hikes to be done very near to the property, but you have to know where you are going. The Sierra Tejeda natural park is mere minutes from El Carligto and the mountain dominates the view to the east. There are various routes into the park and you can walk all the way to the peak at more than 2000m if you have a good seven hours to spare, but there are many accessible trails with stunning views all around. I can explain how to find these or arrange a guide to show the way.
