Chalet la Chaux is a newly refurbished home nestled in the snow amongst a lovely residential area which sits just above the much loved Châtel village and offers breathtaking views over the valley below. Situated on the border between France and Switzerland, this is an excellent location to call home for your skiing holiday.
This calming, well-decorated house can accommodate ten people in five bedrooms and offers rustic surroundings filled with natural materials. Chalet la Chaux is a very social chalet, with a fully open-plan living space on the first floor. The gorgeous interiors will offer a wonderful backdrop as you and your party settle down for the evening by the log burner to play a board game or plan your adventures for the next day.

Leaving the comforting home behind for the day, you won’t have to go far before you are on the slopes. You will find a chair lift located very near to the house which will take you to the pistes of Super-Châtel. This area is popular with ski schools and has great resources for children and beginners including a snow park and snowboarding slopes.

The chalet is located in the wider farming village of Châtel which is between two sections of the huge Portes du Soleil skiing circuit which spans 12 resorts. Châtel itself caters fabulously for all abilities with a mixture of beginner slopes and challenging wooded slopes. Should you wish to explore further into the wider area you could head up to the Swiss village of Torgon which has a children’s activity village and brilliant snowshoe routes on offer as well as breathtaking views.

Winding down back at your chalet after an action-packed day, you will find a modern kitchen to prepare your evening meal and plenty of dining space to eat together if you haven’t already filled up on local delicacies whilst out. Why not have a soak in your own outdoor hot tub to get rid of all your aches and pains before you hit the slopes again the next day. The children will be well-occupied in the TV and games room allowing you time to chat over a glass of wine.

For larger parties it is possible to rent sister property Chalet Du Pre Fleuri (sleeps 8) virtually next door - please follow the link for more information.

Chalet la Chaux is located just a short distance from the traditional village of Châtel while being situated near to a ski-bus shuttle meaning you can split your time between tasting local cheeses and wines down in the village and hitting the slopes which are visible from balconies.

Châtel offers enough amenities to last the entire holiday without needing to step foot outside of the town, but should you wish to take in a bit more of France or hop over the border to Switzerland then this is the ideal place to stay.

In Châtel there is a wide range of choice when it comes to eating out. You can opt for fine dining restaurants or something simpler like a pizza. After your meal maybe your family would enjoy a trip to the bowling alley or cinema before heading back up to the chalet for a relaxing evening. The village also has a selection of shops where you can buy groceries to cook in the chalet or buy souvenirs to remember your trip by.

The resort is part of the Portes du Soleil skiing circuit which sprawls across France and Switzerland and gives you access to 196 ski lifts on to an impressive 286 ski slopes! There is no shortage of great skiing available in this region and everybody is catered for, from experts to those on their first ski trip. There are even skiing lessons available for the less able-bodied, so nobody should feel excluded on a big group holiday.

The Swiss villages of Torgon and Morgins offer an insight into Swiss culture without having to travel too far. Both are under an hour away and offer a lovely change of scenery. Make the most of a trip to Morgins by taking a horse-drawn carriage ride while soaking up the views or maybe snow go-karting is more to your taste. If heading to Torgon, the panoramic landscapes are well worth the slightly longer journey and you can try out a new activity such as geocaching or archery. Torgon also has plenty of restaurants to suit all tastes from Swiss to French and even a chocolate cafe for those with a sweet tooth.

The Resort

Châtel is your very best alternative to purpose-built resorts. Situated in between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, this traditional French alpine village climbs up the hillside and offers an experience which is still unspoilt by tourism. Châtel is most frequented by French clientele, and aside from school holidays you won’t find big tour operators bringing busloads of British tourists around. The surrounding area is also full of beautiful natural sites, so if you’re keen to spend an afternoon off the slopes, hiking or snowshoeing are great options. These excursions also make Châtel the perfect site for an alpine holiday in summer.

On the sunlit slopes right above the village, you’ll find Châtel’s own pistes. They are very scenic to ski, and one of the lifts to the top even provides fantastic views over Lake Geneva. The resort is separated into two areas, Barbossine-Super Châtel and Linga-Pre la Joux, which are linked by a free bus service. The highest slope peaks at 2200 metres and there are 46 runs in total. Châtel has many long tree-lined runs that are suitable for any proficiency level and that stay open until late April.

Châtel is also part of the world famous Portes du Soleil circuit, made up of twelve resorts spread across the French-Swiss border. You can ski Châtel and some of its surrounding areas (including Torgon and Morgins in Switzerland) with a Châtel Liberté Lift Pass, or you can get access to the whole of the Portes du Soleil with a wider area pass and explore its 600 kilometres of slopes. Beginners might be happy staying closer to Châtel while intermediate and expert skiers cover the more challenging parts of the circuit. If you choose the latter, you could find yourself starting out a run in France and ending it in Switzerland.

Keep in mind that Châtel is limited in terms of après-ski. It is not a party resort, but one that caters brilliantly well for families. Special events and activities are held for children year-round, and there is a daycare for those too little to spend all day on the slopes. Instead of spending your evening at the bars, Châtel is the place to discover local French cuisine, take the kids sledging or bowling, or even skiing under the stars as part of the resort is floodlit between 7:30 and 9:30 PM.

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens Ideal for Xmas/NY

Châtel is a great place to take your children on holiday and all ages will find something they enjoy doing in this area. Children will marvel at the wide-open fields of snow to run around in, building snow-men and having snowball fights before warming up with a hot chocolate.

For little ones who have not yet learned to ski, how about taking them to a ski school which has teachers who specialise in teaching children? There are two schools nearby with children’s teaching areas with helpful English-speaking staff to get your child on the slopes in no time. Older and more experienced kids can head out onto the more gentle slopes such as those near Pré-la-Joux and practice their skills.

If your child is not into skiing, don’t worry there is plenty to do to keep them busy. Maybe they could give snowboarding or sledging a try or even go zip-wiring over mountain tops if they are adventurous.

If your kids like water sports then you can take them out to Lake Geneva which is a lovely area to spend the day and also offers other activities loved by children such as archery and mountain biking.
