Situated in the family-friendly Palheiro Village just a stone’s throw from the country’s vibrant capital Funchal, guests will love the plethora of activities on their doorstep. Within the Palheiro Village itself, there are a variety of dining options including the estate's gourmet restaurant Relais & Chateaux, the Garden Tea House and Palheiro Clubhouse. The onsite Palheiro Spa also offers beauty treatments and specialised therapies, at an extra fee. The Spa also features an indoor and outdoor pool, a Turkish bath and a sauna.

The centre of Funchal, Madeira’s capital city, is just moments away. This port city is full of cosmopolitan charm and centuries of history, with everything being within really easy walking distance. The old town area is where you can stroll through narrow, cobbled streets and take in the beauty of all the historic buildings found among them. Many of them date back to the 15th century and there are plenty of picturesque churches to spot. Ride the cable car up to Monte, close to where the villa is, for some truly breathtaking views of the botanical garden and across the sea. From surfing and snorkelling to scenic hikes and a round or two of golf, there is plenty to keep the whole family amused.

Also less than a 10-minute journey by car is the coastal town of Caniço. The most famous attraction here is the Christ the King statue that sits on a viewpoint by the Garajau Marine Reserve. The views from here across the sea are beautiful and get even more impressive if you continue walking to the tip of the peninsula. Make sure you visit the lovely pebbled beach down below too. There are plenty of great overall walking opportunities here, whether it’s along the tops of cliffs or through the lush hills. Mountain biking, snorkelling and diving are also very popular activities in Caniço.

There is a wide range of activities on offer on the Island, but one of the most breathtaking has to be a glorious hike along some of the 2,092 kilometres of narrow stone irrigation channels known as levadas, crisscrossing Madeira's lush mountainous countryside into the Laurisilva forest. One of the most scenics is the Levada do Caldeirao Verde, which meanders four miles past leafy glades and plunging ocean views before emerging into a picturesque clearing sprinkled by a 91-meter waterfall. Just spectacular! And for the adrenaline junkies amongst you, try your hand at the many mountain-bike trails that plunge and ascend this beautiful landscape, or throw yourself into some canyoning, which will have you sliding over cascades and abseiling down waterfalls.

About the area

About Palheiro Village

A Brief History

The Palheiro Estate dates back to the early 1800’s, where the first Count of Carvalhal, João Esmeraldo, had visions of this 120-hectare plot being accessed by the upper Echelon’s to be used primarily as a hunting lodge & summer retreat.

The Hilltop Folly is considered to be the nucleus of Palheiro Estate and much of the original buildings are themed on a neo-classical design. During the next century, Palheiro experienced an expansion and more lodgings were erected. However, it was the gardens that received really special treatment, as many exports were introduced into its gardens, including - Liriodendrons, Metrosideros, Proteas and trees’.

The Estate was passed from generation-to-generation, which always saw an exciting induction of new aspects, but the identity never changed. In 1924, Alan Lethbridge recalls his time spent in Palheiro -

Through the lodge gates that takes one back to an English country house, up a more intimate drive boxed in with camellias of every known shade and behold, the house....it is said that in the days of Portuguese ownership the steward was told to go and count the camellia trees and on being asked how he got on, answered, "Sir, I have counted 9000 and I am tired, there are many more, so let us say that there are 10,000.

Modern Day Palheiro Estate

During the 1930’s Graham & Mildred Ernest made the gardens available for public use, which saw Palheiro gain widespread popularity. In 1993 the Golf Course and the Hotel & Palheiro Village were built by the current Chairman, Adam. His wife, Christina, tends to their impressive Botanical Gardens and son & daughter, Jonathan and Louisa, look after; the Golf Course, Hotel & Leisure activities and Palheiro Village.

The family continued to gather momentum and Palheiro has been accredited with several notable honours, including the five-star Casa Velha becoming a member of the respected Relais & Châteaux Association, in 2001.
