Restaurants, cafés, bars, a supermarket and even a bakery are all within a five-minute drive. Forum Madeira Shopping Centre is also just five minutes away by car and is where you’ll find a great range of shops and leisure facilities. Make sure you visit the rooftop garden for stunning views over the sea and the main plaza where plenty of activities for children are on offer.
Just a short drive away are the main attractions of this area of Funchal. These include the marina, a waterfront area full of lively atmosphere and restaurants. You can also enjoy some dolphin watching by going on a catamaran trip from here. Despite there not being any golden-sand beaches in the area, there are several Lido's that give you access to black sand and volcanic-rock stretches.
The old town area of Funchal is full of charm and history, which you can feel as you stroll along its narrow, cobbled streets. It’s referred to as Zona Velha by locals and is known for its beautiful old buildings and churches. One of the most impressive is the 15th-century Corpo Santo Chapel. Enjoy a cable car ride from Funchal old town up to the Monte area, with its lovely botanical garden to explore.

Funchal is the largest city on the island of Madeira and is encapsulated by Pico Ruivo and its neighbouring mountains, which look as if they have been seamlessly carved into the skyline by a Lusitanian God.
There is no better spot to start your holiday than in the Old Town, which illustrates its personality though street art, architecture and busy local businesses. There are many fine eateries, botanical gardens, a cathedral and impressive museums. Perhaps hop on the Madeira Cable Car as one of your first activities, as this will give you a great idea of the islands size.
Many flock Funchal in order to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline. This is home to its prominent harbour, where hundreds of boats and yachts, some of which enable visitors to embark on a magical sea voyage, can be found. Funchal really is a destination for lovers of the sea; as there are renowned surfing points, as well as being a great place to spot some whales.
Madeirans are also notorious for their elaborate festivals. If you’re travelling during the New Year, you will be treated to one of the world’s biggest Firework Festivals…a dazzling sight! During late February & early Mrach, you are able to witness Carnival and the streets of Funchal are lit with parades and festivities. If that’s not enough for you; the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition, Wine Festival and Christmas are all noteworthy dates for anyone visiting Funchal.
There are some incredible villas on the island and we believe that we have done a great job finding them for you. Have a browse and let us know what you think.
The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.
What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).
Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.
Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.
For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!
With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Villa Martinho is a great base for a family holiday to this lively part of Madeira. It offers relaxed and sociable space indoors, with plenty of room to enjoy outside. Sure to be a favourite feature with children of all ages is the private pool.
Around a 45-minute drive away in the town of Santana is Madeira Theme Park. It’s been totally designed with children in mind, making it a great place to spend a day out with the whole family. The park aims to tell the story of Madeira’s traditions and natural beauty, with the use of traditionally-built buildings and simulation rides. There’s even a large play area for the children to burn off some steam.

Villa Martinho was delightful. Everything you could need -and more- was supplied, even pool towels. It was really good quality. Very clean and new. We loved the comfy beds, crisp, quality bed linen and really appreciated the American fridge freezer and ice machine. The pool was amazing! Perfect size, clean, with sun all day, and so nice that it was chlorine free. It was difficult to tear the children away from it! The outside space was bigger than the pictures show, with plenty of space for barbecue and lazing about. There was even a ping pong table in the basement. The owner met us at the villa and showed us round, and was on hand to call if needed (but everything worked so well we didn't need to!) We found we didn't need a car for our first time in Madeira, as the villa was centrally located, easy walking distance to town, Marina, Lido, restaurants and Promenade with a bus stop just a few steps away. On one neighbouring side of the villa there is an allotment type garden with chickens and a cockerel. We loved waking to the sound of the cockerel -it made us feel like we were truly away from it all. Finally we really appreciated not being overlooked in the pool or garden -which, with the hillside nature of Madeira, can be difficult to achieve. We hope to come back to Madeira and would happily stay in Villa Martinho again.
Great place to stay in Madeira!!
Great place to stay near great restaurants and bars on rua da casa branca. White House, hole in one and moynihans pubs all nearby. House is on a steep hill but near the bottom so no problems there. House is as described, lovely interior and and great outdoor with pool and bbq. Table tennis in the garage as well for those that like something to do. House is 5 mins from lido where you have lido complex, bars, buses restaurants etc. Also have aerobus at €5 which can take you to and from the airport in 40 mins. Adelino is efficient in responding to emails and really takes pride in his house. Won't hesitate to stay here
Very nice Villa
Very nice villa with lots of space. Pool area clean and private. All amenities provided, appliances nice and modern. Owner discreet and non-intrusive. Good location for both old town and Lido. Would happily recommend this property to anyone else.
