In the hills below Garajau of Madeira sits clifftop Casa Canico, a comfortable holiday home that offers plenty of space and a peaceful atmosphere to soak up. This villa boasts an impressive overall plot, with beautiful terraced gardens and special views of the sea.
Idyllic sea views can be enjoyed from the tastefully furnished main living space, as well as from several of the bedrooms. The décor and colour scheme used throughout the villa reflects its proximity to the sea, with restful marine and natural stone shades featuring in most rooms.
The accommodation at Casa Canico is spread across one spacious floor. At the heart of the villa is the living area with glass sliding doors that provide unspoilt sea views and open straight onto the lovely terrace. The living area features two large sofas and several armchairs for chilling out and watching the television or simply taking in the views. In the corner is an elegant dining table, with the kitchen conveniently located in the room next door. Spacious and well-equipped, this modern kitchen has every appliance you need for a comfortable stay. It also features a small table with chairs for quick breakfasts or chatting over drinks as dinner cooks.
There are four bedrooms in total, with each being of a good size and three of them having sea views. The master bedroom features a king-size bed and ensuite bathroom, with another bedroom also having a king-size bed that can be separated into two singles. The third bedroom has a double bed, and the fourth features two single beds and an ensuite shower room. There are also two family bathrooms for all guests to use.
The sea-facing terrace gives you the chance to both relax and enjoy al fresco meals, with outdoor seating, a dining table and a barbecue on offer. There’s also an area of lawn for the children to play. A path leads down to the one of the several garden terraces that Casa Canico boasts. Here you’ll find the kidney-shaped, private swimming pool that’s surrounded by sun loungers and an area with dining table and chairs and a barbecue. The lower terraces are beautifully landscaped, with lush lawns, colourful flowers and exotic palm trees. It really does feel like you have your very own slice of tropical paradise here!
What you should know…
- Not all bedrooms have ensuite facilities, but there are family bathrooms that all guests can use
- The terraced gardens are steep and uneven in places, so take extra care with younger children
- Pool heating can be arranged in advance and is subject to an additional cost

There’s a range of convenient amenities close to Casa Canico, with restaurants, a bakery, a bar and a pharmacy all within a 10-minute walk. A short drive down to the coast makes even more bars and restaurants available for evenings out.
Also a lovely place to make the most of evenings is the promenade at Canico de Baixo, which you can walk along as you watch the sun setting over the sea. The most striking and famous feature in the area is the Christ the King statue that sits by Cristo Rei viewpoint, which provides almost panoramic sea views.
Plenty of shops and supermarkets can be found in Canico village, which is less than a five-minute drive from the villa. It’s a pretty place to spend a few hours, with a lovely main square and charming 18th-century church. You can even head high into the hills from here via the numerous streets.
Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is just a 15-minute drive away. This cosmopolitan city bustles with lively atmosphere, with its old town area by the marina providing a glimpse into its rich history. The narrow, cobbled streets are lined with ancient buildings, making it a history-lover’s paradise.
One thing you must do when you visit Funchal is take the cable car up to the Monte area. It takes you up the mountain for some spectacular views over the sea and city. It also gives you easy access to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. These sprawling, multi-level gardens are full of exotic plants and trees, as well as koi carp-filled ponds that attract ducks and swans.

Funchal is the largest city on the island of Madeira and is encapsulated by Pico Ruivo and its neighbouring mountains, which look as if they have been seamlessly carved into the skyline by a Lusitanian God.
There is no better spot to start your holiday than in the Old Town, which illustrates its personality though street art, architecture and busy local businesses. There are many fine eateries, botanical gardens, a cathedral and impressive museums. Perhaps hop on the Madeira Cable Car as one of your first activities, as this will give you a great idea of the islands size.
Many flock Funchal in order to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline. This is home to its prominent harbour, where hundreds of boats and yachts, some of which enable visitors to embark on a magical sea voyage, can be found. Funchal really is a destination for lovers of the sea; as there are renowned surfing points, as well as being a great place to spot some whales.
Madeirans are also notorious for their elaborate festivals. If you’re travelling during the New Year, you will be treated to one of the world’s biggest Firework Festivals…a dazzling sight! During late February & early Mrach, you are able to witness Carnival and the streets of Funchal are lit with parades and festivities. If that’s not enough for you; the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition, Wine Festival and Christmas are all noteworthy dates for anyone visiting Funchal.
There are some incredible villas on the island and we believe that we have done a great job finding them for you. Have a browse and let us know what you think.

The bedrooms suit children of all ages, with double beds being ideal for teenagers, and younger children sharing the bedroom with two singles. There’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy outside, with the most popular feature sure to be the swimming pool.
One of the most fun things to do with the family is taking the cable car down to Praia de Garajau, a picturesque rocky beach. A family reunion in a stunning location
I was organising a family reunion and was looking for a spacious villa where my guests (old and young) could really enjoy themselves. I made a right choice with Villa da Falesia. It is spacious, stylish, well looked after and in a good location in the southern part of the island. But the big WOW factor is its location on the coast with nothing to impede your views of the endless ocean (we even spotted pasing whales once). There are closeby beach (with cable car and road access), good restaurants and a fabulous bakery nearby. I am so glad that we chose to stay at this vila and will definitely coming back
Super spacious house with stunning ocean view
We thoroughly enjoyed our winter break week at Casa Canico. The house exceeded our expectations, is very well appointed, comfortable, clean and positioned. It has beautiful teracced gardens in bloom, leading down the cliff face. We spent many hours enjoying the peaceful terrace and were able eat eat breakfast and lunch outside most days. The pool is in a sheltered and secluded position out of the breeze. If you like swimming I would recommend paying the extra to have the pool temperature raised as we did. It was worthwhile for us. You can walk from the house down the zig zag to Garajau beach in about 20 minutes, then take the funicular back up. You can also walk (uphill) into Garajau locality for food supplies and a great bakery for coffee and cake. Good fish and seafood restaurant within a short drive at Canico for evenings. We went on a group organised levada walk and would do that again as it was hard to locate the walks on our own. We explored the lush island by car but were always happy to return to peaceful Casa Canico with its stunning views. We plan to return for another winter break, next time with friends to fill the house.
A luxury villa set in a large private and breathtaking garden with amazing views.
Beautiful villa with amazing views
The villa is just perfect. It has everything you could want inside and outside and is immaculate. The gardens and views are simply stunning. Short walk up the hill to some shops and restaurants and not expensive for a short taxi ride to Funchal. You would need a car or taxi service in hand if you want to get out and about. Owners were extremely helpful as the pool heater had broken but were quick to fix it. We loved spending a week here as a group of six and would definitely want to return.
It is an amazing place with a stunning view.
It is an amazing place with a stunning view. We love this place!
Beautiful and peaceful location
Lovely villa in peaceful location, Stunning views. The villa is spacious, tastefully decorated and has everything you need for a perfect holiday.
Absolutely stunning location. Views to die for. Villa is in a quiet cliff top location and is very spacious inside and out with everything you require for a great holiday. Glad we had the pool heated as the weather was not too kind to us. A car is essential as the villa is quite remote and restaurants are not close to the villa.
