Casa Tabua is located in a quiet residential neighbourhood in Ponta do Sol and is set against a backdrop of banana plantations and mountains rolling into the sea. Meaning ‘sun point’ Ponta do Sol is famed for having the best climate in Madeira and offers numerous levada walking trails, observation decks and several surfing beaches. The charming village itself is just a 20-minute walk from the villa (or 3-minute drive) and has plenty to offer with attractive restaurants, bars and shops.

For a day at the beach, head to Praia da Ponta do Sol. Hidden away in a small cove it’s less than a 5-minute drive from the villa and is a peaceful place for a swim. Its calm waters also make it ideal for the whole family. Afterwards, you can enjoy a leisurely lunch or drink at one of the many restaurants or bars.

From Ponta do Sol it’s a leisurely 15-minute walk up the hillside to Zino’s Palace. This charming pink building was once the summer residence of the noble Zino family and remains an example of Madeira’s historic architecture. Stop for a delicious meal at the elegant restaurant or simply order a drink on the terrace and soak up the romantic views.

West from Ponta do Sol you’ll find more natural beauty at Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall cascading off a cliff and raining onto the coastal road below. It’s less than a 10-minute drive from the villa and you can drive through it (make sure your windows are up!) or park the car and walk through the refreshing water.
The small resort town of Ribeira Brava is also worth a visit. Just a 15-minute drive away, it has a small pebble beach, fishing harbour and pretty square overlooked by a 16 th Century church. To learn more about Madeiran culture and history be sure to stop at the local Museu Etnografico da Madeira.

For further historic attractions and museums head to Madeira’s capital, Funchal. Filled with beautiful buildings and narrow cobbled streets there’s plenty to see but be sure to stop at the Design Centre where you can learn more about the work of Casa Tabua’s interior designer Nini Andrade Silva. This beautifully curated space showcases the designs of this talented Funchal-born artist. Nini Andrade Silva has been awarded many awards for her designs and interiors and you’ll soon see why her work has graced the pages of international glossy magazines. Once you’ve explored the exhibition, head to the restaurant or café for dinner or drinks and views across the harbour.

THE REGION

Calheta, meaning ‘Small Cove’, is where many tourists flock to in order to indulge in beautiful man-made beaches and striking scenery.

This part of Madeira is formed of several municipalities, each with something unique and special to offer. Calheta Village is an ideal place to start especially if you enjoy a stiff drink! An old sugar cane factory still produces one of the world’s most respected white rums – Aguardente…perhaps you want to leave this part of your holiday till late in the evening!

Jardim do Mar is where you will find many of the locals on dawn patrol, taking to the waves and surfing. The waters can both be heavy and flat, making them ideal for abilities of surfer. Akaw!

For lovers of seafood, you should look no further than Paul do Mar. This is a village where most of the fisherman work out of, so you know you’ll be able to find the catch of the day here.

For those who have travelled to Madeira for its inland beauty, then look no further than Arco da Calheta and Prazeres. Within these locations you won’t only be able find some stunning hiking trails, but you’re also likely to stumble across some traditionally styled Parishes and unforgettable views.

ABOUT MADEIRA

The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.

What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).

Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.

Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.

For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!

With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Children will love this wonderfully modern villa with its lower ground floor leisure room. They can kick-back on the funky furniture, watch a film on the television, or plug into the Wifi and relax outside on the sun loungers. The indoor swimming pool is perfect for splashing in no matter what the weather while older children can keep active in the gym. A covered terrace and portable barbeque means family meals can be enjoyed al fresco. Upstairs, there is plenty of space for everyone with a mix of double and single rooms. Each room also has access to its own large walk-in shower and balcony. Come evening, there’s a TV in the lounge so the whole family can gather together on the comfortable sofa and enjoy watching a film.

There are plenty of water sport activities on offer nearby from surfing and snorkelling to windsurfing and even paragliding. For a swim in the sea head to Praia da Ponta do Sol. It’s a pretty pebble beach and it’s calm waters mean even younger children can enjoy paddling. Afterwards, enjoy a snack at the beachside restaurant. Also worth a visit is the nearby Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall that cascades off the cliffs onto the road below. Children of all ages will love getting drenched as they run through the water here.

For more natural beauty, head to Paul da Serra, Madeira’s largest and highest plateau. It’s a 30-minute drive from the villa, and at 1,500 metres offers sweeping views of the surrounding valley and mountains. Pack a picnic and spend the afternoon immersing yourself in nature while letting the children run free.

Back on the south coast, it’s just under 30 minutes drive to Madeira’s capital, Funchal. But on the way to the capital, be sure to stop at the spectacular skywalk at Cabo Girao. One of the highest cliffs in Europe, children with a head for heights can enjoy the thrill of stepping out onto a glass platform and seeing a 580m drop below. In Funchal itself there’s plenty more fun to be had including the cable car ride up the mountain to Monte, and the hair-raising toboggan ride back down. Other family favourites include playing in the garden and parks, and visiting the museums including the popular Cristiano Ronaldo museum, CR7.
