Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MaluVilla Malu has located 14km from Ferreira do Alentejo, the closest village, where you will discover lovely authentic restaurants, supermarkets, and pharmacies. The village’s Lagar do Marmelo is a very attractive mill where you can enjoy a tour to learn about the whole olive oil process. The oil is truly delicious. The village boasts an outdoor swimming pool which is very popular.
The region of Alentejo is best known for its delicious red wines. The food is hearty and rustic, full of delicious flavours. Alentejo offers visitors a wonderful holiday with a difference. You will not find developed high rise hotels. It is ideal for embracing the culture and rich history of one of the earliest inhabited places in Europe. Inhabited by Visigods, Lusitanos, Romans and Arabs, you will find monuments dating back to the early stone age and the megalithic period. Alentejo occupies a third of the total area of Portugal and is known as the gastronomic soul of the country. Visitors can enjoy fantastic forests and many artisans working with pottery, woods and cork products.
The splendid Albufeira dos Cinco Reis is 35km from Villa Malu. It is a wonderful area with a river beach with loungers and umbrellas, a watersports activity centre with canoeing, sailing, stand up paddleboarding and other sports, a children’s playground and a jetty. It is a wonderful day trip without having to travel all the way to the sea. If you do want the seaside, Praia Grande de Porto Covo is 65km from the villa and Praia da Costa Norte is 67km. Porto Covo is within the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park and was a small fishing village that prospered during the 20th century. It holds onto its quiet charm with rows of immaculately whitewashed cottages. Praia da Costa Norte is also a stunning beach with wild waves. You will discover that the beaches of Alentejo are very natural with dazzling white sand and often pounding waves.
The historic town of Elvas is within easy reach of the villa. It boasted the largest collection of bulwarked dry-ditch land fortifications globally and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Elvas is 15km west of Spain’s Badajoz and is a very interesting place to visit. It’s important buildings include the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Graca and the centenary aqueduct of Amoreira. There is also a lovely town plaza, quaint museums, narrow, medina-like streets and extraordinary forbidding walls and buttresses.

Best Suited For: All AgesChildren will be in heaven at Villa Malu. Set on a 13 acre estate, they can roam freely and enjoy the great outdoors. The villa pool is fabulous. Table tennis, table football and bicycles are all provided for family fun and so that you can explore the area. The villa is very spacious with an additional living space which is very helpful.
Albufeira dos Cinco Reis is very popular with families. It is not as far as the region’s beaches but offers excellent entertainment. There is a children’s playground as well as a good range of watersports. The sand is lovely so it is really like being at the sea.
The Alentejo’s wild coast is well-known to avid surfers but there are also some gentler waves and long beaches perfect for families. At the pretty town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, Praia da Franquia is lovely and safe for children. It is also good for paddle boarding and windsurfing. Children can enjoy lessons from qualified instructors.
Elvas is popular where children can explore the historic buildings and think about how things were in ancient times. There are many places in Alentejo where children will feel like princes or princesses or goddesses in castle ramparts or Roman temples or like armored knights defending their castles. The town of Estremoz is crowned by an 88 foot high tower surrounded by castle walls. Inside the medieval fortress, King Dinis built a luxurious palace for his queen. It is now a luxury inn with breathtaking views of King Dinis’s realm. The Alentejo is filled with stories and legends that will charm youngers and older visitors alike.
Around Evora, you can discover enigmatic stone monuments and follow a marked driving route to find sites dating between 4000 and 2000BC. The Cromlech of Almendres is an oval of 95 standing stones, some with carvings. Hanging over Portugal’s border with Spain, the Castle of Marvao is wonderful and will set children’s imaginations on fire. Children enjoy climbing the towers and battlements. The views are astounding. The castle is open at night so you can also explore by torchlight. How amazing is that!
Another exciting adventure for children is to ride the vast plains and magical open landscapes on a horse. The western Alentejo is one of the best places for trail rides. The Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo is dotted with horse farms catering to families with riding lessons, trail rides and pony rides for young children. Most rides combine beach rides with trails across fields of yellow flowers, under forests of fragrant eucalyptus and pine and through groves of cork trees with their cinnamon-coloured trunks.
