In a quiet coastal setting, backed by dunes and a short walk from the beach, Villa Joaquina is a spacious holiday home on the Troia peninsula of Portugal. Part of a complex of villas, Villa Joaquina enjoys a secure and private situation with a private swimming pool and bright rooms throughout the interior.

The open-plan living area that extends to most of the ground floor is the perfect place for all the family to get together. A comfortable seating area with television and DVD player sits next to another sociable space for relaxing and chatting, which provides access to the pool area via patio doors.

An oversized corner sofa has room for everyone to recline and relax, with a stylish fireplace providing a focal point and further doors leading out onto the outside space. Sharing this area is an elegant dining table and chairs for more formal dining, with the kitchen having a more relaxed country-style table and chairs.

Also in the fully fitted kitchen are a range of modern facilities to help make cooking delicious meals quick and easy. For your convenience is a utility room with washing machine and laundry tub.

There are two bedrooms on this floor, with one having a queen size bed and the other a double bed and a twin bunk bed. Serving these bedrooms are two bathrooms, with one having entrance via the swimming pool or kitchen area.

To the first floor is a master bedroom with a king size bed, ensuite bathroom with shower and bath and doors opening onto two terraces. Another bedroom with king size bed has an ensuite bathroom with shower and access to a patio. There are two further bedrooms, each with queen size beds and one with doors to the terrace area. A bathroom with shower provides additional bathing options.

Outside is a large, private swimming pool and shower. Surrounding the pool is a terrace with loungers and dining area, with a barbecue that's perfect for enjoying some local seafood al fresco. A lawned area features mature trees and plants for a peaceful space in which to relax or to kick a ball about with the family.

The villa is just 300 m from the beautiful sands of Praia Troia, so you can go from the front door to the beach in a matter of minutes.

Restaurants and a supermarket are within easy walking distance also. Being on a peninsula, the beach tends to be quiet, so you can explore the long sandy stretches and warm waters without worrying about crowds.

There are beautiful views across the sea to the city of Setubal, and you can even get a ferry from the marina that will take you straight there. If you're lucky, you'll also spot the dolphins that congregate in this area and like to swim near the boats.

If you're a keen golfer, you'll be pleased to know that an 18-hole golf course is just 3 km away from the villa. If you prefer something a bit more relaxed, a spa is within easy reach for a pampering session after a long day out.

For history lovers, there are the Roman Ruins of Troia to explore. What was once a Roman fish salting complex is now an intriguing site where you can learn more about the trade in the area and the impact it had on local life.

Take the 15-minute ferry trip to Setubal, and you'll find plenty of exciting attractions and things to do with the family. The Sado Estuary Nature Reserve is an area of wetland between the Sado estuary and the sea and features countless species of birds.

Habitats include marshes, sandbanks, rice paddies and woods, with the opportunity to explore many of these on hiking trails.

THE REGION

The Troia Peninsula is one of the most beautiful coastlines of Portugal, with a 13 km stretch of pristine sands, crystal clear waters and pine forested sand dunes. Reachable by ferry from Setubal, the pristine setting of the Tróia Peninsula is unquestionably one of Portugal’s best-kept secrets.

Sheltered by mountains, the Troia Peninsula enjoys a mild microclimate. The Reserva Natural do Estuario do Sado covers part of the peninsula and is a good place to go birdwatching. The waters around the peninsula are home to a school of bottlenose dolphins. Dolphin-watching trips leave from the marina, or you may even spot them gambolling in the surf on the ferry trip across the estuary.

ABOUT THE LISBON COAST

The Lisbon Coast is a sensational stretch of golden beaches, wave-lashed cliffs and vibrant seaside towns – but there's more to the Atlantic coastline than that. Delve beneath the surface to discover hidden coves, family-owned seafood restaurants and pristine natural parks.

The coast around Lisbon provides an easy, breezy escape from the capital, whose proximity has made it the stomping ground of kings for the last 1,000 years. In summer, Lisboistas stream into elegant Comporta and Cascais to escape the heat of the city; year-round, surfers hang loose on the coast, waiting for the rollers to crash down on the sand.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas on Lisbon Coast, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Reviews

  • Excellent

    on 07/08/2018

We had a very pleasant week of family vacations (8 adults and 4 children). The villa, modern, spacious and comfortable, has contributed largely to the quality of our stay. The beautiful swimming pool has made the happiness of small and large (attention: no protection for small toddlers not knowing how to swim).

  • Stunning Villa

    on 31/07/2018

On arrival at the villa we were all blown away with how amazing it was. The photos do not do it justice, it's incredible. The inside is all open plan, but we spent hardly any time in there due to the weather and lovely pool and outside area. The rooms are all good, although the two king rooms with en-suites are exceptional with beds big enough to get lost in. There is plenty of space to sunbathe and a great BBQ area which we took full advantage of. The outside dining table seats 8-10 comfortably, but there is another round table that could be added if there are more of you. The pool is a good size, although gets deep very quickly so maybe not great for small children. Take bug spray (we bought citronella candles as well) as there are quite a few insects. Location: The villa is situated just a couple of minutes walk from the huge sandy beach and Atlantic ocean where you can watch the sunset over the mountains. We went in April, which is out of season, and often were the only people on the beach. Bliss. There is a beach club, but this was closed for the duration of our stay. There is a small supermarket and cafeteria about 15 minutes walk away, and the ferry to Setubal, and it's impressive fish market, is about 30 minutes walk. The local supermarket closed at 15:30, so without a car on our arrival we would have gone hungry as the next closest supermarket was a 15 minute drive away. I would definitely recommend having a car as there is very little within walking distance of the villa. To the North, Troia has a marina, and a few shops and restaurants, and to the South is the quaint little town of Comporta, both a drive away. If you're looking for a quiet get away to spend time chilling and having BBQs with a beautiful beach just around the corner, and aren't worried about having lots of shops, restaurants and night life nearby, then this is the perfect place. I would definitely go back.
