Villa Bigini is 8km from the enthralling town of Sintra. Set in the Serra de Sintra hills, visitors will discover colourful, extravagant palaces, opulent mansions, and the ruins of an ancient castle within the pine forests. Sintra is brimming with fascinating historic buildings and charming, narrow lanes filled with quaint restaurants and cafes. The Pena Palace is one of the finest tourist attractions in Portugal and exemplifies the 19th century Romanticism style of architecture. There is an alluring mix of vividly painted terraces, mythological statues and decorative battlements, all in the lush Parque de Pena forest. It is always very busy, so you may want to pre-book tickets. You will find plenty of cafes and bars where you can eat and drink something very tasty.

The beaches of the Lisbon Coast are spectacular, with huge expanses of sand. Praia da Adraga Beach is regarded as one of Portugal's best beaches with its stunning scenery of dramatic cliffs, jagged rocks, and golden sand. The beach is 18km north of Cascais, and in between, you will discover Praia do Guincho. It is a fabulous beach combining intense surfing with dramatic, natural scenery. Guincho is situated on the Serra da Sintra National Park's western edge, protecting the fabulous beach from tourist development. The Lisbon Coast beaches list is endless, some family-friendly, and others ready for thrill-seekers wanting to surf the pounding waves. If you head towards Estoril, the other side of Cascais, there are calmer, sheltered beaches. From Guincho to Praia das Macas there are wilder conditions.

Cascais is 15km from the villa. It is a charming Portuguese fishing town with an interesting history. In the past, Cascais was the summer retreat of the Portuguese nobility. Today it is an elegant fusion of its fabulous heritage and modern tourism. Within the narrow, cobbled streets of the historic centre are museums, an imposing fort, lavish villas and charming shops and restaurants. You can enjoy waterside cocktails and delicious meals. A short train ride can take you into the centre of Lisbon or to one of the lovely beaches along the coast.

Golf fans will be delighted with the location of Villa Bigini. There are six golf courses within 20 minutes. These include Quinta da Marinha, which is set amongst beautiful pine trees and stretches down to Guincho Beach. It enjoys magical scenery with its hole number 13 descending to the sea. Definitely an Instagram worthy picture postcard of Portuguese golf! Quinta da Marinha Golf Resort also offers 10 tennis courts, 3 padel courts, 2 squash courts, a sauna, gym, indoor swimming pool, restaurants and the fantastic Marinha Equestrian Centre. Oitavos Dunes Golf is the first golf course in Europe and the second in the world to become a Gold Certified Signature Sanctuary. Penha Longa enjoys stunning panoramic views over the Sinta mountain range. Estoril is one of the oldest and best-known courses in Portugal. Quinta da Beloura and Belas also enjoy amazing reputations.

THE REGION

Thinking about packing your bags and heading off to Portugal? Why not give Colares a go? A real gem of a place, it’s one of the best spots on the Lisbon Coast for a holiday. Colares is absolutely delightful and has long been a very popular summer resort.

In the environs of Colares are the beaches of Praia das Maças, Praia Grande and Adraga, and the typical village of Azenhas do Mar, with its whitewashed houses inset in the side of a cliff.

Colares is also a demarcated wine-growing region, producing the very popular and increasingly rare Colares wine, which can be tasted at the Adega Regional, in a very beautiful building in the town centre.

ABOUT THE LISBON COAST

The Lisbon Coast is a sensational stretch of golden beaches, wave-lashed cliffs and vibrant seaside towns – but there's more to the Atlantic coastline than that. Delve beneath the surface to discover hidden coves, family-owned seafood restaurants and pristine natural parks.

The coast around Lisbon provides an easy, breezy escape from the capital, whose proximity has made it the stomping ground of kings for the last 1,000 years. In summer, Lisboistas stream into elegant Comporta and Cascais to escape the heat of the city; year-round, surfers hang loose on the coast, waiting for the rollers to crash down on the sand.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas on Lisbon Coast, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Bigini is perfect for a family holiday. There is plenty of space to play in the garden and the villa.

The Lisbon Coast beaches are amazing, some with lots of surf and others more sheltered. Several surf schools in Praia do Guincho, including Moana Surf School, Kitesurf School SBKiteboarding and Guincho Surf Shop, if you want to arrange some tuition. Moana Surf School has been open since 2003 and teaches children from the age of 5 and adults.

Cascais has much to offer. The beach is lovely, and there are a beautiful carousel and a lovely walk along the promenade. The Museu Condes de Castro Guimaraes boasts beautiful gardens where children can run around with the peacocks and chickens that reside there.  Children love seeing boats bobbing in the marina, and Cascais has plenty of ice cream parlours. You can take a boat trip with Dolphin Explorers to see the dolphins by the Cascais coast.

A jeep safari tour plunging into the mystical Serra de Sintra is great fun, passing through Cabo da Roca. Children will feel like princes and princesses if you stop at the Pena Palace.  The palace looks as though it has just come from a fairytale book. The gardens are lovely too.

Lisbon is only 35km away and is very welcoming to families. Children enjoy the Oceanarium with its four huge tanks representing the different oceanic regions of the world. There is also a fabulous zoo. The number 28 tram is especially popular, screeching and clattering through the narrow streets of the Alfama district.

Reviews

  • Beatiful surroundings!!

    on 11/09/2023

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The villa was clean and well-presented and the host was very helpful. There was a slight issue with the pool during our stay, but the host was quick to sort it out. The villa is set in beautiful surroundings and there are lots of lovely places to visit nearby. We hope to return in the future.
