Location
About the surrounding area of Casa SesimbraIn a tranquil sleepy spot just minutes away from the coast, Casa Sesimbra is ideally placed to enjoy the delights of Sesimbra, renowned for its fabulous beaches and authentic Portuguese atmosphere.
Sesimbra is a vibrant fishing port in the Setubal District lying at the foothills of the Serra Da Arrabida mountain range; it enjoys a rugged coastline of cliffs, rocky headlands and hidden cove beaches. There is a wonderful sheltered sandy bay, and the waters are clean and very calm, perfect for families and sun worshipers. The picturesque town with cobbled streets has a charming pedestrianised shopping area, plentiful cafes and bars and many marvellous seafood restaurants making it a popular weekend destination for ‘Lisboetas’ due to its close proximity to Lisbon. Lively in the summertime and laidback off-season, it’s a perfect seaside town to enjoy the best of Portuguese living.
Not to be missed is Sesimbra Castle (‘Castelo de Sesimbra’), a wonderful Moorish castle strategically important in Portugal’s history and lovingly renovated in the 1930s, standing 230 metres above the fishing village. If you don’t take the car, it’s a tidy but exhilarating walk to see the extensive battlements and the beautiful tiny church, but so worth the effort as the views of Sesimbra and the surrounding coast are absolutely stunning.
A fabulous day trip is to take a scenic drive across the Parque Natural Da Arrabida (Arrabida Natural Park); this protected park is over 500 meters high and includes the Serra de Arrabida (the hills between Setubal, Palmela and Sesimbra), the limestone cliffs, the turquoise waters and the lush green vegetation covering the Arrábida mountain range make for a stunning visual display. You might catch a glimpse of the resident colony of dolphins from the fabulous view of the Sado river estuary. The Serra da Arrabida coastline has a number of spectacular beaches to stop off at. Praia Figueirinha is the largest and most accessible beach within the park, with plenty of shade, parking and modern facilities.
Your visit would not be complete without a trip to the lively Mercado do Livramento. This is arguably Portugal’s best fish and produce market and has an amazing variety of fish, cheeses, local pastries, olives, aromatic plants, flowers, and seeds. Maybe also book one of the many local wine tours you are absolutely in the right region to partake in sampling some delicious Portuguese wine!
Casa Sesimbra is a relaxing, tranquil retreat, a wonderful base to make the most of this fabulous area famed for its food and wine, stunning scenery and fabulous beaches.

ABOUT THE LISBON COAST

The coast around Lisbon provides an easy, breezy escape from the capital, whose proximity has made it the stomping ground of kings for the last 1,000 years. In summer, Lisboistas stream into elegant Comporta and Cascais to escape the heat of the city; year-round, surfers hang loose on the coast, waiting for the rollers to crash down on the sand.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas on Lisbon Coast, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere are truly wonderful beaches in Sesimbra, and the long stretch of sand in the centre of Sesimbra is divided into two beaches by a historical fort. Praia du California and Praia du Ouro have to be top of the kid-friendly lists. Firstly both are spotless and cleaned thoroughly every day, Praia du California is big with pale powdery sand, and the waters are clear and calm. There are lifeguards and green cross-posts, making it a very family-friendly, safe beach. The promenade houses a number of little shops and restaurants with a vast array of choices; seafood, pizzas, and ice-creams are all readily available, and the kids are going to love a 'Bola de Berlim', a delicious Portuguese doughnut! Praia du Ouro is 'the golden beach' closer to the fishing harbour and protected by the surrounding hills. The sea is very calm, clean and shallow, and it's ideal for small kids and toddlers. There is a long boardwalk and strolling from one beach to the other is easy.
Departing from the port of Abrigo de Sesimbra, you can book some wonderful boat tours. You can look for dolphins in their natural habitat. The clear crystal waters of the Arrabida Natural Park house Bottle-nosed Dolphins and common Dolphins a truly spectacular sight. The Natural Park and the coastline are beautiful, and kid-friendly tours with guides can also include the chance to explore mysterious caves and coves of golden sandy beaches, along with snorkelling and swimming!
If the kids need to burn off some energy, Parque Augusto Polvora is a great place to take a picnic. Covering around 5.5 hectares, there is a terrific skate and bike park, soccer court and basketball court for younger children; there is a playground designed with maritime motifs and an Eco park that aims to encourage the young to appreciate nature's shapes and textures.
A day trip to Lisbon can be a real adventure for the kids; note that Lisbon is hilly and pavements can be narrow, but Lisbon is a child-friendly city, so eating out and getting about should not be too challenging. There are fabulous attractions, including the amazing Oceanario. This is Europe's largest aquarium, and the impressive building is home to penguins, puffins' sea otters, sharks, manta rays and a plethora of sea creatures. Carry on the adventure by taking a trip on the cable car ride located behind the aquarium and flying high with the kids, and of course, the day would not be complete without a ride on one of the city's famous trams!
