However, as the years went on, the building experienced a plethora of intense renovations, adding a range of arches and statues. The arch has only been open to the public since 2013 but has managed to make a fundamental impact on the culture of the region. The National Palace of Pena sits on top of a grandiose hilltop and is located around half an hour away from the centre of the region. This expansive palace was once a traditional monastery that was transformed into an awe-inspiring residence for King consort Ferdinand II. This landmark is shrouded in Romantic motifs, creating a picturesque sight from any angle. Thinking about packing your bags and heading off to Portugal? Why not give Colares a go? A real gem of a place, it’s one of the best spots on the Lisbon Coast for a holiday. Colares is absolutely delightful and has long been a very popular summer resort.

In the environs of Colares are the beaches of Praia das Maças, Praia Grande and Adraga, and the typical village of Azenhas do Mar, with its whitewashed houses inset in the side of a cliff.

Colares is also a demarcated wine-growing region, producing the very popular and increasingly rare Colares wine, which can be tasted at the Adega Regional, in a very beautiful building in the town centre.

The Lisbon Coast is a sensational stretch of golden beaches, wave-lashed cliffs and vibrant seaside towns – but there's more to the Atlantic coastline than that. Delve beneath the surface to discover hidden coves, family-owned seafood restaurants and pristine natural parks.

The coast around Lisbon provides an easy, breezy escape from the capital, whose proximity has made it the stomping ground of kings for the last 1,000 years. In summer, Lisboistas stream into elegant Comporta and Cascais to escape the heat of the city; year-round, surfers hang loose on the coast, waiting for the rollers to crash down on the sand.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas on Lisbon Coast, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
