Guests staying at Villa Alentejo quickly fall in love with the incredible, far reaching landscapes and stunning, tranquil beaches of the Alentejo. With golden fields waving in the breeze, wild unspoilt beaches waiting for those first footsteps, immense plains sprinkled with cork oaks, ancient olive trees and vineyards and hills dusted with whitewashed houses, the area has now been discovered by the rich and famous. Villa Alentejo enjoys a huge plot near the peaceful village of Cruz Joao Mendes, just a little south of Grandola and Melides and the charming Comporta villages. Throughout this stunning landscape, ancient walled towns rise up with castles, gardens and courtyards which offer Arab influences and some with a history going back to the Bronze Age and the Roman Empire. Visitors enjoy many outdoors activities including kayaking, surfing, hiking, windsurfing, scuba diving, hunting for boar, rabbit, hare, quail and wild pigeon and fishing together with fine dining and superb wines.
Melides is filled with the scent of pine and eucalyptus and boasts a stunning coastal stretch and a white cobbled central square clinking with glasses and smelling of fresh fish sizzling over coals. It is little wonder that the likes of French designers Christian Louboutin and Philippe Starck, the German artist Anselm Kiefer, the British painter Jason Martin and the Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen are moving in.

Villa Alentejo is mostly about the location. It offers charm, simplicity, space and nature. The villa is comprised of two buildings, one with two double bedrooms, one single and an exterior double suite and the other with two double bedrooms, one suite with a mezzanine level that can sleep two and a separate mezzanine with four single beds. The minimalist interiors reflect the colour hues of its surroundings, the cork oak fields, the vineyards, the rice fields and the beach. Dazzling white walls are decorated with local craftwork.

The first building enjoys an open plan, low key living space with a kitchen along two walls offering all the appliances that you need for a self-catering break, a modern dining table and a cosy living space with an attractive open fireplace in the corner and a wall-mounted television. The minimalist bedrooms offer open wardrobes, comfy, prettily made beds and attractive artworks. Two enjoy double beds and the last is a single. Guests share a modern, beautifully tiled shower room. The exterior suite offers two single beds that can be set up as a double and a bathroom with a shower. Just outside is a porch with an alfresco lounge area, alfresco dining and a portable barbecue.

The second building is larger. Under delightful wooden beamed ceilings, it offers a spacious living space with modern, simple decor. Like the other building, its dazzling white walls are decorated with gorgeous modern prints and local crafts which blend beautifully with the scatter cushions on the corner sofa. There is a television for your enjoyment. The large country kitchen offers a good range of appliances, a modern dining table, a fireplace and arches leading through to the other spaces. The high beamed ceiling is lovely. The decor of the bedrooms is similar to those in the other building, simple with colour splashes coming from delightful textiles and scatter cushions. Two of the bedrooms enjoy double beds. The suite offers flexible sleeping arrangements with a choice of two single beds or a large double. This room also enjoys an ensuite bathroom with a shower and a mezzanine level with two single beds that could again be used as a large double. The main mezzanine level offers four single beds and a large playing area. This room is ideal for children, reached via the hall. There is also an additional bed available on request.

Outside, guests enjoy a charming 8.5m x 4m swimming pool surrounded by loungers and alfresco dining. There are two tables, one seating twelve guests and the other seating ten. The barbecue masters amongst you can prepare a feast on the charcoal barbecue. Villa Alentejo is totally secluded and offers a wonderful away-from-it-all feeling. There are restaurants within 4 km of the villa, the Safari Bodoca Park is 9 km away, Praia de Santo Andre Beach is 17.5 km away and Praia de Melides Beach is 19 km away. You will have plenty of time to explore the wonderful villages of Comporta, Melides, Grandola and many other fascinating and atmospheric villages and towns of the Alentejo.

Villa Alentejo is nestled in the countryside, close to the village of Cruz Joao Mendes and within easy reach of Grandola and Melides and the charming Comporta villages. The Alentejo is an increasing beloved place for tourists with breathtaking surroundings combining the best of the countryside along with the sensational beauty of the Alentejo coast’s stunning, unspoilt beaches. Surrounded by undulating umbrella pines, cork trees and stunning rice fields, guests truly get away from it all at Villa Alentejo. Herdade da Comporta is comprised of seven tranquil villages including Muda, Carvalhal, Comporta, Brejos da Carregueira, Carrasqueira, Possanco and Sol Troia. Each has its own charms and you should visit them all! The towns of Troia, Grandola, Melides and Alcacer do Sal are all wonderful.

Melides is no longer the secret Portuguese beach spot that it once was. Beyond its sparkling dunes, a thriving creative community of sculptors, artists, architects and musicians have moved in. Surrounded by nature and the scent of pine and eucalyptus, the village has been a sleepy hamlet for more than five hundred years. Now it has woken up and offers delicious local wines and food together with striking new villas dotting the hills and river estuary. The international jet set are starting to make this backwater their own. Melide’s beach is stunning so expect to see gorgeous dunes and fascinating wind-sculpted rocks together with thrilling waves.

Grandola boasts a history going back to the Bronze Age and was an important outpost for the Roman Empire which included large scale fishing, salting and preservation complexes. Grandola offers an incredible shoreline which stretches from Troia to Melides. Activities include kayaking, surfing, hiking, windsurfing, scuba diving, hunting for boar, rabbit, hare, quail and wild pigeon and fishing. The town enjoys an excellent reputation for its fantastic gastronomy and quality wines. The handicraft industry in Grandola includes wrought iron, weaving, tapestry, wooden furniture, pottery, cork and leather goods.

Nestled between Grandola and Comporta is the tiny hamlet of Muda. The hamlet is brimming with tall pines and ancient cork trees, another very natural area. Visitors enjoy horse riding, surfing lessons, yoga, boating, sailing, wildlife watching and much more. Although Muda is not right on the beach, it takes just minutes in the car to visit some spectacular wonders. On one side you can visit the beaches of Comporta, Pego, Carvalhal and Troia. In the other direction, you can visit the beaches of Melides, Santo Andre, Porto Covo and Sines.

Carvalhal enjoys a good array of cafes and restaurants as well as a central shopping street brimming with antique shops, boutiques and decorating shops. Spa Oryza offers wonderful wellness treatments using natural products as well as yoga and beauty workshops.

The charming village of Comporta is located at the base of the Troia peninsula and at the side of the Sado estuary. With a history going back to the Roman Empire, Comporta is still a hive of agricultural production with rice fields and vineyards producing some fine white, red and rose wines. Golfers love Comporta. Its fabulous Comporta Dunes course was designed by David McLay Kidd within a stunning terrain of pine forest and sand dunes close to Pego beach and Comporta Links is under construction. The nearby Troia championship golf course was designed by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones. Comporta offers an excellent array of activities including horse riding, fishing, hunting, sailing, bird watching and cycling. Comporta beach is a ten minute walk from Comporta village.

Brejos da Carregueira is located between Comporta village and Carvalhal. Again the village is surrounded by rice fields and pine forest. The village enjoys an almost private beach which you reach through the fields. Carrasqueira village is located on the banks of the River Sado estuary with lots of agricultural land and colourful fishing boats. Its main street is lined with an array of restaurants, bars, cafes and a few shops. Possanco village is a newish country hamlet surrounded by the protected reserve and with wonderful views of the estuary.

Sol Troia is a privileged area with its pavements sprinkled with towering palm trees and pretty flowers. The village is situated at the centre of the Troia peninsula between Comporta and Troia. It is an idyllic location just off the coast of Setubal.

The exclusive Troia boasts a championship golf course, a trendy marina, spas and a casino. Visitors enjoy sea and river fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and cycling. Troia lies at the top of the peninsula just off the coast of Setubal and is overlooked by the Serra da Arrbida Nature Reserve. Visitors can take the ferry over to Setubal which is a twenty five minute crossing with the car or ten minutes if you take the catamaran as a pedestrian. Otherwise, you can drive via Alcacer do Sal and Comporta village. Troia is a wonderful area of natural beauty and is home to much wildlife including flamingoes, storks and dolphins.

Further south from the villa is the small seaside town of Sine, the birthplace of the great explorer Vasco da Gama. This historic fishing town enjoys kilometres of sandy beaches and wild, untamed waves.

THE REGION

The plains that extend as far as the eye can see start close to the Tagus. While to the north, the pace is set by the green of the flatlands, further south; the landscape combines with the sun, the heat and a slower pace of life. This is the Alentejo.

The vastness of the landscape is dotted with cork oaks and olive trees that withstand time. Santarém is a natural viewpoint over the immensity of the Tagus. Here and there, you find a walled town, such as Marvão or Monsaraz, or an ancient dolmen to recall the magic of the place. Around the hills, low, whitewashed houses stand on small knolls, castles evoke battles and conquests, and the yards and gardens are witnesses to the Arab influences which shaped the people and nature.

In the Alentejo, the power of the land marks the time and cities like Elvas and Évora, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, show the tenacity of the people. Perhaps this is the reason that culture and spirituality take on a singular character here. These memories of the past are also shared by other cities, such as Santarém, Portalegre and Beja, and in the former Jewish quarters, particularly in Castelo de Vide.

But you must also explore the coast. The landscape here is hilly and rugged, with small sheltered coves between the cliffs, many of which are ideal for surfing. You will also breathe the scents of the countryside here, the aromatic herbs that season the fish, seafood and other regional fare to be accompanied by the region’s excellent wines. Indeed, the entire Alentejo lives according to the rhythm of the earth.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Alentejo is a wonderful pick for families. With its two buildings and flexible sleeping arrangements it works well for multi-generational families and groups of friends with children. Children love the mezzanine rooms! Surrounded by nature, the villa is spacious and beautiful with so much space to play in.

The fabulous Safari Bodoca Park is just 9 km from the villa. It is a fantastic day out for the whole family with raft rides, beautiful walks, animal presentations, animal interaction, forests, lakes, an exotic birds garden, safaris and VIP packages with meals. There is a huge range of animals including birds of prey, giraffes, primates, falconry and so much more.

The Alentejo beaches are incredible and a great place to learn a new watersport. Perhaps your children will return as brilliant surfers or bodyboarders. The Troia Peninsula stretches south along the Atlantic coast for a massive 65 km. This area is described at the Portuguese Hamptons and is popular with celebs wanting to escape the Algarve crowds or a bolthole close to Lisbon with Jose Moourinho, Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni among them. There is no glitz, just pines, vineyards, sand, Roman ruins, dolphins, oaks, rice fields and wildlife.

There are watersports galore on some of the beaches and amazing boat trips from the Troia marina to watch dolphins, to enjoy sensational sunsets and to explore this stunning coastline. There is so much wildlife including beautiful flamingos and tall storks. There are several surf schools at the beaches with friendly teachers. Horse riding is popular through the company Cavalos na Areia. Children can ride through the rice fields or along the beach, all the nicer at sunset. Kayaking through the rice fields of Comporta is another wonderful treat. The Vala Real is the main water channel and there are many animals to watch along the banks. Tours can be arranged through Cavalos na Areia.

Children love taking the ferry or catamaran over to Setubal, possibly seeing dolphins on the trip. While in Troia there are many beautiful walking trails with lovely views. The marina is very buzzy.

Lisbon is also worth the day trip. Children love visiting Lisbon with its many family friendly attractions. The Portuguese have a very family-focused culture so young children are welcome everywhere. The Oceanarium was opened in 1998 in the Parque das Nacoes. It boasts a huge collection of marine species including penguins, seagulls, sea otters, sharks, rays, chimaeras, sea horses, starfish, sea urchins, corals, sea anemones, crustacians, octopuses, jelly fish and much more. Lisbon Zoo is popular with sumatran tigers, lions, giraffes, dolphins, birds, pelicans, reptiles and elephants. There is a children’s petting and feeding farm and a fun cable car. On a rainy day KidZania is a child-sized city where children can play at being grown-ups trying out different occupations earning money to spend in the supermarket, renting a car or treating themselves to a haircut. Lisbon is famously built on seven hills which give wonderful views. The number 28 tram makes thrillingly steep ascents and descents as it passes through the different neighbourhoods and past historic sights such as the Cathedral and Basilica de Estrela.

  • FANTASTICO!

    on 13/06/2023

  • Absolutely amazing stay.

    on 19/08/2022

Villa is clean and very well stocked. Kitchen is highly functional and had everything we needed. Linens and bathrooms were spotless. Outdoor space is wonderful for family eating. Pool is not huge but comfortable for four or five people at once. Lots of loungers to relax in. Location is very quiet and quite remote. Amazing stars and sunsets! Vegetable gardens on the property, the owner was very generous and we had tomatoes, onions, zucchini from the ground to the table. Two mins from highway makes it super convenient. Supermarkets 10mins away. Incredible beaches 20/30 mins away. Drive from Lisbon was easy and about an hour and twenty mins.
