The Cathedral of Evora is a truly inspiring landmark that expresses a wide variety of innate Gothic motifs. As the largest medieval castle in the entirety of Europe, it boasts two looming towers as well as a titanic collection of cloisters. Inside, this moment showcases an authentic polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary, giving guests a chance to deepen their knowledge of Grandola’s rich religious history. The plains that extend as far as the eye can see start close to the Tagus. While to the north, the pace is set by the green of the flatlands, further south; the landscape combines with the sun, the heat and a slower pace of life. This is the Alentejo.

The vastness of the landscape is dotted with cork oaks and olive trees that withstand time. Santarém is a natural viewpoint over the immensity of the Tagus. Here and there, you find a walled town, such as Marvão or Monsaraz, or an ancient dolmen to recall the magic of the place. Around the hills, low, whitewashed houses stand on small knolls, castles evoke battles and conquests, and the yards and gardens are witnesses to the Arab influences which shaped the people and nature.

In the Alentejo, the power of the land marks the time and cities like Elvas and Évora, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, show the tenacity of the people. Perhaps this is the reason that culture and spirituality take on a singular character here. These memories of the past are also shared by other cities, such as Santarém, Portalegre and Beja, and in the former Jewish quarters, particularly in Castelo de Vide.

But you must also explore the coast. The landscape here is hilly and rugged, with small sheltered coves between the cliffs, many of which are ideal for surfing. You will also breathe the scents of the countryside here, the aromatic herbs that season the fish, seafood and other regional fare to be accompanied by the region’s excellent wines. Indeed, the entire Alentejo lives according to the rhythm of the earth.

Grandola contains a vast selection of admirable attractions, making it an ideal holiday destination for families with adventurous children. The Lousal Mining Museum was first established in 2001 as a way to celebrate the region’s long history of pivotal engineering practices. This establishment was originally used as a bustling power station, meaning that guests can observe a wide collection of authentic machinery all within the confines of one building. Equipped with a series of ornate diesel engines, detailed documents, and fascinating exhibitions, this is an incredible attraction to visit if you wish to learn about this progressive native industry from a much more intricate and intimate perspective. The Lousal Mining Museum can be found just half an hour away from Grandola Views.
If you are travelling as a family of avid animal lovers, a trip to Mama Adama’s Alpaca Farm is a real treat. This considerable farm is home to a tremendous collection of alpacas, all of which present their own personalities and quirks. Under the guidance of the experienced owners, guests are free to interact with these mesmerising creatures and offer them a sense of comfort and care. Children also have the prime opportunity to discover more about the nuances of these animals as well as a range of crucial conservation practices. This park is also home to a wide range of horticulture and terrain, expanding children’s understanding of the many natural landscapes seen throughout this area. Mama Adama’s Alpaca Farm is located just over 20 minutes away from the villa.
For older children who are obsessed with the mystery and the macabre, Cappela dos Ossos is a must-visit landmark. Translated as the Chapel of Bones, this monument is best recognised for its unnerving interior. The walls of this chapel are lined with an abundance of human skulls, many of which can be traced back to the monks that occupied this building at the time. This design choice was carried out during a time when graveyards were overrun with dead bodies, so the locals had no choice but to cement skeletons into the walls of this chapel. Though this attraction may not suit everybody’s taste, many previous guests say that its unbelievable features have to be seen to be truly believed. The Chapel of Bones is based around an hour and a half away from the villa.

There was tons of space for our group of 8, both indoors and outdoors, with lovely big tables on both sides of the house - one to the East for breakfast/sunrise and one to the West for dinner/sunset. The location is very quiet and remote, which was perfect for us, and the surrounding nature is lovely. The weather was a bit variable, but we did enjoy a few warm days on which we were able to make use of the pool. Most of the beaches are about 20 minutes away by car, but we managed to explore pretty much the whole coastline from the tip-off the Troia peninsula down to Melides during our week here. Lénia and Pedro were great hosts, who gave us lots of good recommendations and were super quick to answer whenever we contacted them.

  • A unique stay that combines style, character and serenity

Pedro and Lenia were brilliant hosts and were really helpful in providing tips on the areas as well as giving insight.
The property has lots of character and has a fantastic infinity pool looking out.
Breakfasts were great and we came away thinking that our stay really enhanced our trip.

  • Exceeded expectations!!!

Sunrise in the front, sunset in the back of the house ....views are stunning! Very tastefully decorated farm house with regional materials and original design elements. Pedro and Lenia are a prime examples of the Alentejo hospitality culture and will help any international or local traveller feel right at home. Amazing place to arrive, switch off and recharge!

Hands down one of the best places we've stayed in Alentejo. Here you'll find nature at its best, peace, and quietness. The rooms are spacious and clean. The service is very professional and the breakfast is great. The house is conveniently located: just a 10min drive from Grândola and 30min from the best beaches. We'll come back for sure! Thank you Lenia and Pedro :)
