  • Douro Views is located in a rural region and surrounded by miles of the incredible Portuguese countryside, so perhaps not suited to those who want to enjoy the hustle and bustle of more urban areas
  • While children are welcome here at Douro Views, parents will want to be aware that there are several areas of the villa where younger children will need to be well-supervised, including around the ground-level pool, and the barbeque area and the indoor woodburner
  • The weather in the Douro Valley can be unpredictable, with it not uncommon to experience rain and fog as well as sunshine if you choose to visit later in the year

Surrounded by beautiful olive trees and rolling vineyards, Douro Views offers the perfect private holiday retreat - ideally located for visiting the local wineries or taking a relaxing river cruise. Douro is one of the oldest wine regions in the world, with grape harvesting and wine production going back over 2,000 years. Visitors here can enjoy the treasure of the Douro Valley - strong and sweet port wine, as well as participate in traditional grape stomping. If you are keen to see the grape harvest in the Douro Valley, it’s best to aim for September/October time. The crowds will be smaller in the region, but be aware that the temperatures are cooler, and a light rain jacket may be required!

Portugal is famous for its abundance of hiking opportunities, and some of the country’s most scenic trails can be found right here in the Douro Valley. There’s no better way to discover the picturesque scenery of the region than with a gentle stroll through the patchwork of vineyards, olive groves and idyllic villages or, if you’re feeling up to it, a more strenuous climb up to some of the panoramic viewpoints such as Casal de Lovios or São Salvador do Mundo.

The Douro region is renowned for its dreamy countryside landscapes, but the towns and villages are also well worth a visit! Quaint and friendly with a laid-back vibe, this beautiful region is bursting with baroque architecture, pretty chapels, museums, and small cafes and eateries offering delicious local bread and wine. The cuisine here is hearty and satisfying, with meat, fish and stews dominating the menus - so be sure to leave the diet at home! Specialities of the region include grilled salt cod, roasted suckling pig and octopus salad, to name but a few. If you’re after a lighter option, you’ll find all manner of places serving up delicious cheese and charcuterie platters - perfect for enjoying with (another!) glass of the local wine.

But Douro isn’t just about the great food and drink! If you’re looking for something a little more adrenaline-fuelled during your stay, there is an array of watersports to indulge in, including canoeing, kayaking and water-skiing. There are many designated swimming areas in the region where you can take a relaxing dip, as well as some beautiful river beaches, known as fluviais. Douros is also home to some excellent bird-watching locations, which are sure to delight nature-lovers. Bring your camera and get ready to capture some snaps of the local species such as the black stork, griffon and Egyptian vultures, golden eagles, peregrine falcons and red and black kites.

ABOUT THE DOURO

A symbol of Portugal’s birth and growth as a nation, the Douro has long been the country’s lifeline. Leaving the pastel-coloured metropolis of Porto, venture through the enchanting countryside.

Following the winding Douro river east from Porto reveals one of the most scenic drives in Europe and Portugal’s premier wine region, the Douro Valley. With terraces of vines lining the riverbanks, Douro Valley holidays offer stunning hiking trails, beautiful viewpoints and a wonderful selection of peaceful retreats.

In the Douro, you will find quiet towns and villages, vineyards hugging the bends, castles from the time of the Reconquest and other places worthy of a stop to look far into the horizon.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Douro Views offers kids literally a breath of fresh air with its beautiful, natural surroundings and one-of-a-kind views that are sure to impress guests of all ages. With its six bedrooms, the villa is perfect for larger family groups or two smaller families travelling together, and the presence of both double and twin rooms means that everyone can be accommodated comfortably.

Older children and teens will be delighted to know that despite the remote location of Douro Views, there is WiFi throughout, as well as a flatscreen TV…and the fully air-conditioned property ensures that the kids stay cool on the hottest days. Speaking of staying cool, children of all ages will enjoy having their own private pool to enjoy, although adults should be aware that the ground-level pool doesn’t have a barrier or fence, so it will pay to make sure that the little ones are well-supervised while playing in the vicinity.

Douro is undoubtedly famous for its vineyards and wine tours, but those travelling with the kids will be pleased to know that the area is still suitable for them too. Quinta do Popa vineyard features a ‘kids section’, small tables and chairs where the children can paint and draw while the rest of the family enjoys the wine tasting experience. The location overlooking the river is also the perfect place for a family picnic, making it a favourite destination for those who are holidaying in the region with their children. Another good option for the whole family is Quinta da Pacheca, which has a large garden and plenty of space for the kids to run around and play.

Taking a river cruise is something that will appeal to the whole family too. We recommend the shorter boat ride from Pinhao, which is a pretty village at the heart of the Douro Valley. Longer boat rides are available from Porto to Regua or Pinhao, but be aware that if you have very young children, it can be an exhausting day.

While you’re staying in Douro with the children, then a trip to Porto is well worth it. The second-largest city in Portugal, Porto, is located on the ocean’s edge of the Douro Valley. The city offers many beautiful gardens for the children to run and play in - in particular the Crystal Palace Gardens, which is free of charge and exceptionally pretty. The interactive museum, World of Discoveries, is well worth a visit too; with touch screens and a unique indoor boat ride that takes you through different countries, it’s sure to be a hit with kids of all ages.
