Grandeur, beauty and history are abundant in this comfortable and characterful villa which sits on a tranquil hillside overlooking the idyllic “Valley of Silence” on the edge of the historic city of Vicenza, easily accessible to Verona, Padua and Venice. Once lived in by a famous Italian author, it is now owned by his descendants and has hosted many distinguished guests over the years.

Villa Ai Colli Berici is just ideal for a group of friends or family who would like to explore this glorious part of Italy but would also relish spending days by the pool in a beautiful setting. The ancient trees in the lovely garden have shaded generations while roses, lilies and osmanthus bring sensory delight to contemporary visitors. The pool area, offering a fine view of nearby Villa Valmarana, has lounge chairs, a changing room and fridge for that post swim, pre-croquet refreshment.

A large sitting room opens onto the terrace for al fresco breakfasts and there’s a log fire for chillier days indoors. The pretty bow window annexe in the dining room has views of the garden, the perfect spot for a quiet read. Four of the comfortable furnished bedrooms are en suite while two have an adjacent shower room and bathroom - the master bedroom enjoys sitting and dressing areas and direct access to the garden and pool, tempting for an early morning swim.

Vicenza, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a beautiful town, mainly due to the fine architecture of sixteenth century architect Andrea Palladio. “La Rotonda” and Teatro Olimpico are two of his finest pieces but there is so much else to see and explore here. The splendours of Venice, only 45 minutes away by train, are sure to tempt you but there are other historic places to visit nearer home.

Padua is a picturesque Renaissance city of squares and bridges with magnificent Giotto frescoes in Scrovegni Chapel. Verona is known as one of the most romantic cities in the world - look out for Juliet’s balcony and the atmospheric Roman amphitheatre hosting concerts and opera productions.

Visit the canals of Treviso or sample some cheese in the hillside village of Asiago. Travel further afield to reach the crystal clear waters of Lake Garda or the seaside town of Chioggia.

Villa Ai Colli Berici can be found on a hillside on the edge of Vicenza, in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy with great views across the “Valley of Silence”.

In a beautiful setting, you are within striking distance to all that Vicenza has to offer – the heart of the town is around 2.5km away, a leisurely stroll in around half an hour. Even closer are local restaurants and a good supermarket. Stop off for a coffee or lunch in the pretty café-bar in the nearby 17th century villa which is open to the public, just a very short walk away, famous for its Tiepolo frescoes.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Vicenza was a prosperous town under Venetian rule and much of its fine architecture survives, mainly due to sixteenth century architect Andrea Palladio whose villas give the town its distinctive character. Palladio’s greatest masterpieces are “La Rotonda” and Teatro Olimpico whilst Palazzo Chiericati houses the museum and art gallery. The town is also famous for its jewellery production whilst wine-lovers will be able to arrange tastings in the villa or visit vineyards in the surrounding area and Prosecco DOC wineries.

Of course, the wonderful city of Venice (70km) is around a 45-minute train ride away so take a boat trip on the Grand Canal, sip a coffee in St Mark’s Square or just follow the trail of  tiny squares and canals until you are away from the tourists. The romantic town of Verona (54km), also easily accessed by train, is associated with Romeo and Juliet and you can still visit that famous square and balcony.

Nearby Padua (37km) is a picturesque Renaissance city of squares and bridges, home to an ancient university and has a lively studenty feel. Book tickets beforehand for the popular Scrovegni Chapel and view the amazing Giotto frescoes or marvel at the world famous Basilica di Sant’Antonio da Padova. Browse in the markets around Palazzo della Ragione or picnic in the gardens near Corso del Popolo.

Bassano del Grappa (34km) is another great day trip, a pretty town known for its wooden 13th century Ponte Vecchio Bridge designed by Palladio. It’s situated where the flat Veneto plains reach the hills leading to the Alps. Call into the elegant medieval city of Marostica (29km) on the way back from Bassano to see the 14th century Piazzo Castello with its markets, bars restaurants and shops - a lovely spot to while away an hour or two. In the middle of the square is a huge chess board where people are the chess pieces!

The village of Asiago (64km) stands on its namesake plateau and is a popular holiday destination during winter and summer. It’s famous for its cheese, honey and jam and is a great place for outdoor activities - the old train road for walkers or cyclists connects it to the other nearby villages and there is skiing and snowboarding during the winter.

Italy is always a wonderful place for families and you can be sure they will be loved and appreciated wherever you go.

In and around Vicenza you will also find tennis and horse riding. Furthermore, there is plenty of exploring to do within the town itself – look out for Museo del Gioiello with its sparkling jewels, crowns and precious stones and light shows taking place at the remarkable Teatro Olímpico.

For some tranquil nature and space to run around, Parco Querini is a pleasant park in the centre of Vicenza, home to herons, rabbits, ducks and tortoises and lots of perfect spots for a picnic.

If you are visiting the village of Asiago, around an hour away, there are several nearby activities for kids. Millepini park has an Agility Tree Trail and there’s an ice rink next to the park. Laghetto di Lumera is a tiny lake with a quiet playground and benches. You could also try also Gnomes Village and Kaberlaba, a playground with inflatables, trampolines, horses and ponies.

Schio, 30km away, is surrounded by the  small Dolomites in the Leogra valley and is a wool manufacturing town with lead mines and clay quarries, making a change from Palladian architecture. Here you’ll find The World of Miniature trains, housing a collection of model trains with a scenic layout (check the website for opening times beforehand).

Reviews

  • Touch of class

    on 26/09/2023

Our second stay and definitely will not be our last. Set in beautiful grounds, the villa is a touch of class. Spacious, immaculately clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated.
Anna our local host made us feel most welcome. The arrival grocery shop complete with local wine together with the catering and housekeeping services and local restaurant recommendations made our stay perfect.
Not sure about writing a view as I want to keep this as our best kept secret.

  • Experience 10/10

    on 23/08/2023

I've stayed in my fair share of short term luxury rentals. It's difficult to say which is *the best*, but Villa Ai Colli Berici is definitely a contender. The entire experience is a 10/10. Anna, the local liaison couldn't do enough. The premises, pool, and garden are maintained to perfection. (Cleaning lady, pool man, and gardener, and handy man all made their unobtrusive appearances during the week while we were there.) The house is equipped with everything one could ask for and it is eminently livable and comfortable. The view is spectacular, and all the outdoor and indoor eating areas and living spaces make you want to stay at home rather than go out touring or eating in restaurants. If you're looking for an Italian Villa in Northern Italy, away from the crowds, even in August, look no further. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

  • Will definitely return. Wonderful

    on 15/08/2023

Our time at the villa was wonderful. There is everything you need for needs a successful vacation. Anna and Lucia were always a great help and gave us information about the area, restaurants, etc.
    We will definitely return!!!

  • A special wonderful place

    on 09/08/2023

Great house, beautiful quiet garden and pool, great view. You felt completely comfortable and everything was well organized. Contact person on site was accessible throughout and helped with all questions! A very special wonderful place that will stay with us forever!

  • Perfect place

    on 10/07/2023

It was an amazing stay at Villa Ai Colli Berici! The city, Vicenza, was walkable and very nice. Anna can give you very good tips for local restaurants or wine tastings (definitely a must do). The view, the pool and the diner table were more than beautiful! It's a perfect place to visit with family or a group of friends. A week we will remember forever. Side note: there is a lift for the food in the kitchen (we found that very cool).

  • Wonderful vacation

    on 09/07/2023

We had a wonderful vacation at Villa Ai Colli Berici. The house and the garden are beautiful and very comfortable. The history of the house and its family are outstanding. Anna and Lucia have been really helpful. Thank you for everything!

  • Comfort, history, gorgeous views and peace.

    on 13/06/2023

This is a beautiful gracious villa with tons of space. If you are looking for new and modern this property isn't for you, but if you are looking for comfort, history, gorgeous views and peace, this is the spot. Anna was amazing, making sure we got settled in and helping us replace the flat tire we had on the way. We enjoyed exploring Vicenza, Padua, Verona and Soave while we were there, ending everyday in the pool with prosecco. Who could ask for more. It was super hot while we were there but the pool was wonderful after a day of walking in the heat and the AC kept us comfortable at night. We will definitely come back if we travel with the family to this area again.

  • Special place

    on 18/04/2023

Villa Ai Colli Berici is a truly special place. We had a wonderful week on the property and exploring the area.

  • Perfection. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

    on 14/03/2023

This was a magical vacation in a magical city, staying in a magical villa. I cannot say enough great things about this entire experience. The villa was perfection - we each got our own rooms (and most of us, bathrooms!) so we could have our own space when needed but then had so many wonderful and beautiful spaces to all be together - both indoors and out.
The villa is incredibly located - 10 minute walk to the grocery store, 20 minute walk to the train station, 15 minute walk to the city centre - so we left the car there and walked the entire week.
I cannot thank the host/owner/helpful people enough for making us feel at home and so happy in our first full family vacation in a very long time. We would love to come back and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place! I miss it already!

  • Beautiful location

    on 25/01/2023

The location of the villa is very beautiful right above the valley of silence. It's a very peaceful place, but still with walkable (15 minutes) access to the city. In the morning you only hear the chimes from the church across the valley, that's so beautiful. The town of Vicenza is also very beautiful with a lot of museums and things to see especially all the buildings constructed from Palladio.

  • Absolutely amazing

    on 15/11/2022

Absolutely amazing house, and the location above the valley is spectacular, while still being less than five minutes from a supermarket, ten minutes from town etc. A once in a lifetime kind of villa - perfect place to catch up with friends or family. We would love to come back.

  • Can't wait to stay again

    on 05/10/2022

Love this house, those views, and the helpful hosts. Can’t wait to stay there again someday!

  • Amazing

    on 16/09/2022

    Better than we thought possible

  • Very peaceful

    on 24/07/2019

Many thanks to you and Anna for our delightful birthday visit which our family certainly enjoyed. It is a lovely site and house with pool perfect on hot days. Very peaceful compared to hot and crowded Venice.
