Overview
The first stones of Villa Romeo were laid in the fourteenth century, and over the years, this country home has been expanded and renovated by the same family. In the sixteenth century, beautiful frescos were added which can still be seen and more recently outbuildings have been utilised, and the house has been modernised. The long history of the villa has been retained during restorations, and the original features and antique furnishings add to the beauty and charm of the place.
Today, the villa which sits in a valley in the breath-taking region of Umbria is used as a holiday home and is set up to offer guests all the home comforts and amenities they need. The villa is ideal for a large family or for hosting a special occasion such as a birthday or wedding celebration. Eighteen people can be accommodated across the main building and a separate apartment, so there is plenty of space for everyone to unwind. The rustic yet elegant living and dining spaces of the house open up on to a large established garden with a private pool which overlooks the panoramic landscape views, ideal for lazy afternoons in the sun.
Located in Umbria, you are well situated to enjoy the surrounding countryside and little villages close to the villa as well as heading further into central Italy if you wish to. Umbria is a charming area and is relatively small; rather than crowded cities, it is made up mostly of hamlets, villages and towns with their own personalities. Near to Villa Romeo is the ancient town of Trevi which is filled with clusters of old buildings perched on a hilltop. The town has some lovely historical sites to visit, including churches and the two circuits of walls which surround parts of Trevi. Here you will also find a range of shops, bars and restaurants as well as fantastic views over to nearby towns such as Spoleto and Foligno which are also well worth a visit. All three of these lovely towns are under 18km from your villa and there are also shops and eateries much closer.
For a day out make sure you visit Assisi (33km away) most famous for being the birthplace of St Francis and for its pilgrim trails. The town has much more to offer than its religious past however and in fact, the entire town is a now UNESCO World Heritage site, packed with sites to explore and delectable Umbrian foods to try.

Villa Romeo is located in Umbria which is known as the green heart of Italy. This means you are surrounded by dense woodlands, open countryside and farms making local wine and olive oil. The countryside contains lots of little villages and towns which pop up on hilltops puncturing through the vast greenery. The rolling countryside offers plenty of places for you to visit on your holiday and you can try out a wealth of outdoor activities nearby. You could walk some of the ancient pilgrim road the Via Francigena, take horse-riding lessons or head out on horseback through the olive groves and pine forests or how about trying rafting or mountain biking, all of these activities can be found locally and are great ways to enjoy the region’s beauty.
Umbria is known for both its wine and its olive oil and if you are a fan of either of these then you are well-placed to take part in a tour or tasting experience at local farms. A little further out from your closest towns and villages are two great places to visit: Assisi which is 33km away and Perugia which is 48km away. In Assisi, you will spot the huge Basilica of St. Francis which is a much-loved attraction and dominates the landscape. The Basilica is made up of three churches on top of each other and is packed with art-work and highly renowned frescos. There are also fantastic traditional restaurants in the town and artisan shops selling balsamic vinegar, olive oil and lovely ceramics. If you are feeling adventurous, you could even paraglide over Assisi and enjoy the best possible views of the area.
Perugia is a little further away but is also a lovely place to visit for a day trip and is also famous for its Jazz Festival! Off the main square the Piazza IV Novembre you will find museums, churches, a palace, lovely fountains and lots of winding streets filled with shops, cafes and restaurants.

Region
Umbria has best of Italy to offer: rolling landscapes, wine, beautiful towns and villages, olive oil, expansive lakes and the food, glorious food. A holiday here can be as lazy, active, cultured and as delicious as you like.
This region is scattered with pretty, picturesque villages, while the area has a rich cultural heritage. From thermal pools to medieval cathedrals and olive oil museum, Umbria has an intriguing amount of history to discover.
Both Rome and Florence are accessible within a day trip, while the closest towns of interest would be Orvieto, the old town which is a fascinating series of winding streets, piazzas and a colourful weekly market.
History lovers will be spoilt - from the first century Roman amphitheatres to the twelfth-century duomos, to the fourteenth-century hilltop fortresses, the glut of remnants from the medieval and Bronze Age that punctuate the region is impressive.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesUmbria is a great location for a holiday with children as it is so open and green, the beautiful surroundings entice you outdoors to take part in activities in nature or simply enjoy a picnic in the olive groves.
Nearby there are so many things your kids can try out such as mountain biking, trekking or horse riding. An hour away there are also water sports available at Lake Trasimeno where you could build rafts or try wakeboarding. At the lake you can also book onto a boat trip to visit the two islands which are in the middle of the lake; one island contains some cafes and shops and the other is part of a national park, so the whole lake area is wonderful for a full day out.
Umbria is full of museums, art galleries and ruins which children can explore. If your kids enjoy this sort of thing then a good idea is to purchase a museum pass for the museums in nearby Spoleto which gives you entrance to seven different museums including a Roman museum and a costume museum.
If your kids prefer to run wild then head to the Activo Park which is a twenty-minute drive from the house. As one of the biggest adventure centres in Europe, there is plenty to do here including tree-top rope courses, climbing, crossbow shooting and skating. There should be something for all of the family to enjoy on this day out.

Everything was perfect
Thanks Francesca, my nice host at Villa Romeo. All four elements were happening in equal measure - the cuisine, the wine, the service, and the overall ambience. It taught me that dining could happen at a spiritual level.

Looking for an Italian relaxing experience with my wife, I found in Villa Romeo a lovely place to sleep, to relax and to visit UNESCO sites in central Italy. Spoleto is wonderful and really near to our romantic structure. Thanks Francesca!
