Villa Pretorio is a spacious and contemporary holiday home located in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Val d’Orcia region of Tuscany. Available only for those aged twenty-one and over, this stunning villa offers a serene retreat where a group of friends or older family members can unwind in the semi-rural setting.

The accommodation at this home is spread over three lovingly restored buildings, parts of which hail from the thirteenth-century. Here you will discover extensive living spaces, a large modern kitchen and twelve bedrooms each with an en-suite shower room. Surrounded by countryside and pretty villages, yet well-furnished and decorated, this house offers an ideal mixture of traditional Italian living and modern design.

The three buildings which make up the villa are all connected by charming terraces furnished with outdoor seating and shady spots where you can relax. These terraces lead on to the wider garden which is a great space for spending lazy afternoons. In the lush garden, there are dining areas, sunbeds for sunbathing and a fantastic private infinity pool. The garden is all the more impressive due to the setting; overlooking the hills of this UNESCO World Heritage Site area. This outdoor space is perfect for enjoying early evening meals, you could even pick your own herbs and vegetables from the kitchen garden for a truly locally sourced meal.

When you wish to get out and explore the local area there is plenty to see and do. This area is especially loved by foodies who can sample an abundance of locally produced wines and cheeses such as the Tuscan Pecorino cheese. A great way to enjoy these products is to visit a traditional farm or vineyard; many of these can be visited with a guided tour and often include a delicious lunch. Just a few kilometres away there is also a small town with a supermarket, a selection of shops and some great places to eat.

If you plan to visit more of the area, then there are many towns and villages worth visiting nearby; including Montalcino and Pienza which are under twenty-minutes away by car. A little further out are San Casciano dei Bagni which is a beautiful thermal village and of course the amazing city of Siena, both of which can be reached in under an hour.

Villa Pretorio is located in a rather special setting as it sits in a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Val d’Orcia region of Tuscany. This beautiful landscape still resembles the Renaissance paintings it was often depicted in and there are many natural attractions to enjoy here. Though based in the countryside, you are not isolated as there are many villages and towns surrounding the villa and the city of Siena is under an hour away!

The rolling hills of this area are covered with vineyards which produce lovely wines such as Brunello red wine and sweet dessert wines. These dessert wines are produced close to the villa in a small town called Montefollonico; here you can taste the wine and other varieties on wine tasting tours or pick up groceries at the local shops. The town is also a lovely place for a stroll around as it is a medieval walled town, while some features are even older. Make sure to visit the Romanesque Church of San Leonardo and some of the other historic sites if visiting the town.

This area of Tuscany is filled with towns like this, and you could visit a different one each day without getting bored. Each village and town has its own history and often serve delicious local foods which you can try in small traditional trattorias.

Montepulciano is a short drive away from the villa and is one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Tuscany. The town of Pienza is another which is worth a visit - this stunning little town was even chosen as the filming location for Zeffirelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet. When built, the town was particularly wealthy which is reflected in its amazing architecture. The Cathedral and town hall are especially notable.

Though located in the countryside, the villa is just an hour from the city of Siena. Siena has so much to see and do that you may want to visit more than once. This city is packed with palaces, churches and monuments. The staggering Tower of Mangia which is next the Palazzo Publico offers incredible views over the city and beyond. If you happen to be in Siena in July or August, you could also join in with the festivities surrounding the Palio horse race which has taken place here since the 17th-century or watch the race itself. After a busy day of sight-seeing there are lots of restaurants to choose from, but a pizzeria in the main square the Piazza del Campo would be the ideal setting for an evening meal with great food and a lively atmosphere.
