You will find total tranquility and utter beauty at the exquisite Villa Dei Mercanti in the enchanting Val di Chiana, close to Siena, Cortona and Arezzo in southern Tuscany.

Everything about Villa Dei Mercanti feels authentically Tuscan from its inviting interiors to the eight hectares of magnificent grounds with stunning views around you. This grand Leopoldina-style villa dates back to the 18th century and features its original dovecote tower and garden annexe, all of which have been recently renovated to create a beautiful holiday home with eight bedrooms.

Step inside the villa and you will sense a relaxed ambience against a backdrop of elegance and quality. Antique furnishings, striking objets d’art and pretty touches allow guests to soak up the character of this unique villa whilst feeling comfortably at home in such charming surroundings. The main house has ample relaxation rooms, a kitchen equipped for the very best Italian cook and a superb dining area leading out to an al-fresco terrace for meals looking over the estate’s century-old olive grove. You will also find four attractive en suite bedrooms, including an especially lovely king-size double on the top floor with its own covered balcony with views of the picturesque valley.

A garden annexe and dovecote tower have also been converted into wonderful accommodation; the dovecote would be ideal for a couple with its own living room and loft bedroom whilst for larger groups, the annexe features three pretty bedrooms, each with their own shower room and doors leading out to the landscaped gardens.

The eight hectares of grounds are tremendous at any time of year – a true Tuscan paradise whether you wish to find a secluded spot or prefer to spend convivial times with friends and family. In Spring watch the fruit orchards blossom, followed by flowering wisteria as summer approaches. The aromas of lemon trees and lavender fill the air in the summertime as you cool off in the swimming pool or relax amongst the countless hydrangeas and wild roses. As Autumn approaches, the colourful woodlands are a delight as olive farmers prepare for their harvest and truffle hunters start searching. Even the winters are magical as you gaze out over the evergreens towards the misty valley.

You’re perfectly positioned to visit some of Tuscany’s greatest attractions with Siena, Cortona and Arezzo all within easy reach and even Florence just 90-minutes by car. Visit the wineries of nearby Montepulciano to sample its famous Vino Nobile or drive westwards to explore the Chianti vineyards. The Val di Chiana also offers wonderful walking through idyllic Tuscan landscapes alongside hearty regional cuisine that can be enjoyed in local osterie and trattorie, including in the historic town just a short walk away.

Even Umbria is close by if you feel like some watersports on Lake Trasimeno, just half an hour away, or visit the chocolatiers of Perugia, the region’s capital. The Val di Chiana is a truly magnificent part of this alluring region.

Located on the western side of the Val di Chiana, Villa Dei Mercanti is set in eight hectares of private grounds within walking distance to a charming Tuscan town, between Arezzo and Siena.

It’s around 2km via the country lanes to the heart of the nearby historic town where you will find local restaurants, delightful shops, pretty churches, an impressive synagogue as well as an interesting museum. Excavations in the late 19th century discovered signs of Etruscan civilisation and there are many other fascinating historic features of this picturesque town with spectacular views from its hillside position.

This is a superb location in Tuscany near some of the region’s most glorious villages and towns and the proximity of the A1 Autrostrada (connecting Florence, Arezzo and as far south as Rome), just 6km away, means that you are very well connected by car.

Perhaps start by visiting the idyllic hilltop village of Cortona (34km), as featured in the famous book and film ‘Under the Tuscany Sun’. Explore its medieval lanes, visiting charming shops and traditional restaurants as well as characterful bars and cafes. Soak up the historic architecture around you and learn all about Cortona’s Etruscan and Roman history at the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca. Admire the tremendous views of the Val di Chiana landscapes from the medieval walls.

Montepulciano (35km) is also close by, another charming village famous for its vino nobile and surrounding vineyards or head to Pienza (41km), a UNESCO World Heritage site with incredible Renaissance buildings and delicious local sheep cheese, Pecorino di Pienza. Not forgetting the incredible city of Siena (42km) with its medieval lanes, breathtakingly beautiful Duomo and famous central square, Il Campo.

As well as delightful villages, towns and cities, Val di Chiana offers wonderful walking and cycling trails cross its wondrous landscapes, fascinating historic sites, thermal springs and exquisite food and drink. Specialities of the region include porchetta, rabbit, Chianina steak, chestnuts, truffles, plums and typical ‘peasant’ food, also popular in Umbria, such as slow-cooked beans, farro and pappa al pomodoro.

You can dine in some wonderful osterias in the small but lovely city of Arezzo (25km). It’s also a great place to explore – start in the beautiful Piazza Grande and if visiting on the first Sunday of every month then look out for the antiques fair. The square is also home to medieval jousting re-enactments in June and September. Lovers of fine art must visit Piero della Francesca’s frescoes in the Basilica di San Francesco.

This is also a great base for exploring the vineyards of Chianti with some of the most well-known Chianti villages reached within an hour such as Gaiole, Castellina and Radda In Chianti.

For a change of scene, head south towards Umbria and cross the border to discover Lake Trasimeno, around half an hour away, or the wonderful city of Perugia (80km), easily reached in around one hour by car.
