Sa Paza

Sa Paza enjoys a privileged position looking out towards the turquoise sea on an idyllic headland around 10km north of San Teodoro.

Surrounded by other villas, there’s a handful of summer restaurants, bars and a useful shop selling groceries around 1km away as well as tennis courts and a 5-a-side football field. The nearest beach, also within walking distance, is a wonderful south-west facing bay with shallow waters, backed by a salt-water marine pond which is home to a variety of birds (including the occasional pink flamingo). Take a picnic, binoculars and your snorkelling gear for a relaxing time by the sea. 

Follow inland lanes or coastal paths passing Sardinian macchia and rocks to other beautiful beaches and coves, some with amazing views of the islands off the east coast. Some of the beaches in this area are quieter than some of the tourist hot-spots elsewhere in the north-east of the island outside the high season.

The main beach (and usually the most popular) on this peninsular, around 3km away, has pebbly sand and perfectly shelving sea ideal for youngsters as well as facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas and a summer restaurant. Kayaking and boat hire can also be found nearby. Arrive early for a parking spot in high season.

This is the marine protected area of Tavolara and there are many diving opportunities nearby. The conditions are perfect for snorkelling as well as more advanced scuba diving where you can learn about the rich biodiversity under the sea. Boat trips further out can also be arranged to visit other fascinating diving sites.

Lovers of nature and wildlife can also drive 10km up the coast and pick up a ferry across to Tavolara Island, a place of wild beauty (except in July when it hosts an annual Italian film festival!).

There are of course many excellent walking trails both on your doorstep and further afield as well as horse-riding in San Teodoro, around a 10-minute drive away. Golf-lovers can play in stunning surroundings at Golf Club Puntaldia, only 9km by car.

Spiaggia La Cinta (10km) is another spectacular beach to visit with 3km of shallow shelving water and bright white sand, making it popular with families. Try out some kite and wind-surfing or take long walks along the coastline, looking out for pink flamingos and herons on the lagoon that backs the beach.

Just south of La Cinta beach, visit the charming town of San Teodoro (11km), a former fishing village which has a number of atmospheric restaurants, bars and shops as well as a lively nightlife after dark. There are all sorts of festivities throughout the year and plenty of opportunities to sample some of the excellent local cuisine in one of the many traditional restaurants in the town.

Hikers and mountain bikers can also experience the wilder side of Sardinia by visiting the stunning Monte Nieddu where the views from the peak will take your breath away. There are also some family-friendly trails that take you to some wonderful vantage points of the eastern coastline or discover the natural pools and waterfalls of this remarkable area.

With over 2,000km of coastline, Sardinia certainly has a beach to suit every taste. Be it family-friendly, secluded beaches and coves, great for watersports, or you’d just like to daydream some time away.
