Villa Galena is a classically beautiful villa with exquisite grounds, a gracefully presented pool and stunning lake views. Nestled closed to the southern shore of Italy’s largest lake (Garda), this prestigious home is close to the small, yet lively, town of Desenzano del Garda.

This commanding stand-alone home is a fine example of liberty-style architecture; set across three storeys it accommodates 12 guests. Standing majestically within its manicured gardens, the private estate is framed with palm trees within a gated compound set in a well-heeled residential neighbourhood. The expansive gardens comprise sloping green lawns, a dazzlingly elegant Art-Nouveau style pool, complete with an ornate fountain and ultra-stylish gazebo for poolside lounging and dining.

With both a garden level and upper-level terrace and abundant outdoor dining spots, alfresco meals, barbecues on balmy evenings and drinks overlooking lake views will set the tone for a memory-making stay. Vibrant flowering plants, a sweeping driveway and impeccably equipped and maintained outdoor spaces lend an idyllic note to this luxurious haven.

The interiors at Villa Galena emanate neo-classical grandeur and refined, yet relaxed, comfort. With large open-plan living and dining spaces on both the ground and first floors, a mezzanine level television lounge and a well-equipped gym on the attic level, guests can enjoy their own downtime and choice of dining spaces. Options for both lively group time or tranquillity are ample, from the roof terrace with its soft loungers, to the kitchen terrace for morning coffee with lake views or a moment of relaxation in the mezzanine space. Styled with sleek marble surfaces, airy proportions and majestic open stair-cases, this charismatic home blends both old and new, with uncompromising quality and attention to detail at every turn. Ethnic rugs, avant-garde lighting, contemporary art and perspex dining sets jostle with a creamy neutral palette and exposed natural timber.

The bedrooms offer restorative charm, with hotel-grade linen, genteel styling and chic bathrooms. The first-floor over-sized bathtub is a magazine-worthy affair of Art-Deco finishes and glossy black tiling. This home displays Italian design at its best, along with a timeless note of refinement.

Set in the region of Lombardy, the relatively small town of Desenzano is close to (and in the province of) the larger town of Brescia, and boasts a small fortress and archaeological museum. Nestled on the shores of Garda, Desenzano has a pretty harbour, a bustling nightlife scene and winding historic streets. The beautiful scenery around Italy’s largest lake inspired poets and artists from around the world, including James Joyce and Maria Callas.

Visitors can enjoy the lake and all it has to offer, as well as the thermal lakes of Colà (24km) or a visit to the renowned peninsula town of Sirmione (16 minutes), for its thermal springs (a spa destination dating to Roman times, the ruins of which remain.) The pretty town of Bardolino (30km) is set at the feet of the morainic hills known for its fine olive oil and wine production and Italy’s hidden gem, Verona (44km), where Shakespeare’s romantic Juliet balcony can be found and summer operas in the amphitheatre can be enjoyed.

Villa Galena is set in a well-heeled residential district in the small yet lively town of Desenzano close to Lake Garda’s southern shores (1.5km). This stylish home is a stone's throw away from the shops, restaurants and harbour, as well as the town’s medieval Castello with battlement towers and archaeological museum, making it a great base to enjoy the lake and this beautiful part of Northern Italy.

Desenzano is unofficially considered ‘the Capital of the lake,’ and from its pretty harbour visitors can opt for boat trips (in lieu of car travel) to the island’s other towns; a tour may include Sirmione, Peschiera, across Garda Bay to Bardolino and onwards to one of the lake’s most spectacular spots: Punta San Vigilio.

The region is known for its thermal parks, olive oil and wine production and historical towns with monuments dating to Roman times. The beaches in Desenzano are wonderful, notably the "Desenzanino" beach, "La Spiaggia d’Oro" and "La Spiaggia della Rivoltella.” On the first Sunday of every month, the town hosts an antique market.

With just a 16-minute drive (8km) visitors can explore the impossibly pretty town of Sirmione, set at the end of a strikingly thin peninsula, and has attracted the likes of Maria Callas and boasts a hot spring. Continuing the thermal theme, the nearby town of Colà (24km) has a thermal park hosting two large thermal lakes. Bardolino (30km) is distinctly Italian in flavour, offering a vibrant blend of upscale shopping, cafe-lined piazzas and medieval churches. Bardolino is known for its Romanesque church (San Severo) with beautiful frescos, an Olive Oil Museum, locally produced fine red wines and a long lakeside promenade framed with local restaurants.

Lazise (28km), meaning ‘city on the lake’ in Latin, is nestled at the foot of the morainic hills. The six towers of the Castello Scaligero and its ancient walls date back to medieval times Lazise has a charming old town, with narrow alleys and picturesque squares, a gorgeous harbour and 14th-century Veronese customs office.

Verona (44km) Verona is one of Italy’s hidden jewels: less dense in crowds than Venice, this charming, historical city is an important landmark within Italy’s art heritage. The historic centre is where visitors will be able to visit the main plazas and Juliet’s house. The Basilica Santa Anastasia is a 13th-century gothic church featuring famous frescoes and a stunning interior.

Villa Galena is an excellently-equipped and spacious environment for family holidays in and around Lake Garda and Northern Italy. Italy’s largest lake is a hive of activity with lots on offer for older children (canyoning, rock-climbing and watersports), while the safely landscaped beaches and gentle promenades are ideal for smaller children.

There is a choice of excellent beaches around Desenzano and little history enthusiasts will enjoy the medieval castle. The postcard-pretty town of Sirmione (8km) has a castle and also an extensive site of Roman ruins at the tip of the peninsula.

Taking a boat tour from Desenzano’s harbour will be a novelty for children of all ages, with an array of different tour itineraries on offer, whether it be to the walled city of Peschiera, to Lasize’s quiet harbour and historic customs house or Simione’s crystal clear waters.

Bardolino has a small tourist "train" for the little ones, while two of Italy’s best water and theme parks are accessible for a day trip; Movieland (24km) features movie-themed rides and attractions, and Gardaland (20km) features a huge array of rides and a sea-life centre.
