Villa Archiki S can be found nestled in a group of five detached environmentally-friendly stone houses, set in beautiful verdant grounds, with a garden brimming with indigenous herbs amongst an ancient olive grove. The property is located in the tiny suburb of Neapoli, on the southeast coast of the ancient Greek island of Lesbos, in the Aegean Sea. The nearest international airport is Mytilini Odysseas Elytis, a few kilometres south of the villa, or if you are island hopping arrive at the port of Mytilini, just north of the property. The village of Neapoli, on the southeast coast of the island, has a beautiful beach, just a few minute's walk from the villa. If you want to improve your forehand, there is both a tennis club and a tennis academy, and there is also a basketball club to play a few hoops.

The small suburb is peppered with a few local tavernas, and a café bar to enjoy a morning coffee. The capital town of Mytilini is a ten-minute drive away and has everything you will need to cater for your holiday, including supermarkets, souvenir shops, and restaurants. The town is also home to a handful of museums that are well worth a visit, especially if you want to learn more about the history and culture of the island. Take a wander around the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Folk Art Museum, the Museum of Costume and Embroidery, and the Theophilus Art Museum. Climb the famous castle fortifications for some stunning sea views, then walk the Roman aqueduct and admire their technical skills. Mytilini reflects its history in the number of Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, its many Byzantine monasteries, and mosques still there from the time of Ottoman rule. Make sure you don’t miss the local markets, selling hand-pressed olive oil, hive honey, carved woodwork, and homemade cheeses. After all that you’ve earned yourself a sit-down, a glass of ouzo and a plate of Greek mezes in a street side café, or treat yourself to some freshly caught fish in a seafront restaurant.

There is so much to see and do around the island, if you are feeling active there are lots of hiking trails, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. Take a tour of over two hundred caves scattered across the island, believed to be originally neolithic places of worship. Marvel at the natural hot springs of Efthalia, Thermes, and Gera. Discover an underwater world of snorkelling and scuba diving. Sunbathe on one of the many varied beaches that populate the coastline, and partake in water sports, most especially windsurfing. Visit villages as old as time, most notably Molyvos, Agiassos, Plomari and Skala Sikimias, and see how the islanders really live. Lose yourself in the unique and natural phenomenon that is the Petrified Forest, created from intense volcanic activity. Then visit the nearby museum at Sigri, which is dedicated to researching, promoting, displaying, and preserving it.

Go on a wine tour and sample the fruits of the harvest, and most of all make sure you don’t miss the World of Ouzo Museum at Isodoros Avvanitis. At the end of a busy day sightseeing, sit back and watch the stars appear on the big screen as the stars come out to shine at the open-air cinema specially constructed for the summer. For those who want to venture further afield, the port at Mytilini has ferries that can take you to the neighbouring islands of Lindos, Samos, Chios, and beyond.

Children can have so much fun when you stay at Villa Archiki S, starting with the shared swimming pool, where they can swim and splash all day. The villa is set in enclosed grounds, with lush green lawns and mature trees, where they can safely play. The nearest beach at Neapoli is within walking distance, where there is an easy entry into the shallow calm waters of the Aegean Sea. The coastline is populated with family-friendly beaches, many with organised sun loungers, parasols, water sports, facilities, and restaurants and bars. We especially recommend the beach of Gavanthas for its calm and quiet picturesque setting and the resort of Eressou with its dark volcanic sands.

No trip to Lesbos is complete without a family day at sea, and there are lots of options. All aboard for an entry-level glass-bottomed boat tour, where they can spot the sea life through the glass. Go on a shared boat trip out to sea, and if you are really lucky, they might get to see a dolphin or seal playing in the water. Push the boat out and charter your own yacht for a lazy day at sea, swimming and snorkelling, discovering hidden bays and secret coves, dining aboard, and then sail back to the harbour as the sun sets. Your kids will love a visit to the UNESCO Geopark Petrified Forest and Museum at Sigri.

This incredible lunar landscape of trees turned into stone by intense volcanic activity is fabulously fascinating. If you are lucky enough to be on holiday in June, there is the Lesbos Food Festival, which has special cookery lessons for kids, teaching them how to make traditional Greek dishes. They can learn the importance of bees and beekeeping at the Museum Honey Farm in Skalochori, and get to taste it too. The Olive Oil Museum at Plomari has an original press, and an exhibition of the history of olive oil production on the island, sample some and take a bottle home with you. Enjoy a family day out in Mytilini, children especially love a visit to the ancient fortifications and medieval castle with magnificent views from the top.

There are museums to spark their interest in history, beaches to build sand castles, parks and children’s playgrounds, and a harbour to take boat trips from, as well as lots of family-friendly traditional tavernas where you can all enjoy homemade Greek dishes. In the centre of the island, there is the Kelloni Nature Reserve, where they can spot up to two hundred and fifty species of birds, fabulous if you’ve got a twitcher in the family. A visit to local villages, through the natural flora and fauna of the Lesbos countryside, is a great way to learn about the culture of the country. End your day out in the picturesque village of Molyvos, where in the summer months, the open-air cinema shows children’s films alfresco.
